The Myth of Helios & Rhodes

When Zeus was busy dividing the earth among the , the sun god Helios was unsurprisingly late to the party and missed his share of land. That was a classic Helios move.

But no worries! Zeus, being occasionally reasonable, agreed that Helios could claim the first land to rise from the sea at sunrise. So Helios waited. And waited. Then, just as the sun peeked over the horizon, the stunning sea-nymph Rhodes emerged in all her radiant glory.

Captivated by her beauty, Helios bathed her in his golden rays, and together, they created seven sons because when you’re a sun god, everything you do is epic.

Fun Fact: With over 300 sunny days yearly, Rhodes is officially the sunniest island in the Mediterranean!

Ah, Psyche and Eros, my absolute favourite myth, and for a good reason!

Eros, son of Aphrodite, wasn’t just the most handsome of the immortals, he also embodied love and desire in their purest, most intense forms. Imagine that, good looks and the personification of passion! Meanwhile, Psyche was an extraordinary beauty in her own right. But she wasn’t just a pretty face, she symbolised the human soul.

So, what happens when the embodiment of love and the very soul of humanity collide?

It's a wild love story, of course. It’s a tale of deep longing, heartache, and a relentless search for connection. As Eros wisely says, “Love cannot live without trust.” A lesson Psyche learns the hard way when trust is broken.

After heartbreak, rejection, and a series of trials that would make even Hercules break a sweat, Psyche sets out with sheer determination to win back her true love.

With a little help from the gods (who always seem to have a hand in these things), love triumphs, and Psyche and Eros are reunited eternally.

A timeless reminder that love, trust, and perseverance can bring even the most complicated relationships back to life ❤️

If it weren’t for Poseidon, god of the sea, and his questionable anger management skills, we wouldn’t have the stunning Cyclades to sail around today.

According to Greek Mythology, whenever a nymph annoyed Poseidon, or he just had one of those "bad trident days" he’d transform her into a rocky island. And just like that, the Cyclades were born!

But what are nymphs, I hear you ask? In Greek mythology, nymphs are like nature’s guardians, spirits tied to specific parts of the natural world. They care for everything from forests and rivers to trees and mountains, working closely with gods like Artemis and Poseidon to keep the world in harmony. While nymphs are generally gentle and nurturing, they could sometimes test the patience of a god.

It is a legendary case of turning drama into beauty.

In Greek mythology, Athena and Poseidon had what can only be described as the original "divine showdown" to determine who would be the protector of a newly established city in Attica.

The challenge? To present the citizens with the most valuable and useful gift. The winner would have the town named after them.

Mighty Poseidon struck a rock with his trident, and bang, a salty spring gushed forth, symbolising his control over the seas. Maintaining it cool and elegant, Athena struck a rock with her spear and sprouted the olive tree. A gift that promised peace, prosperity, and an endless supply of olive oil.

The citizens, ever so discerning, wisely chose the olive tree, and thus Athena became the patron goddess of the city that would bear her name: Athens.

Fast forward a few millennia and the myth is still very much alive. It’s said that every olive tree in Athens today is a direct descendant of Athena’s original offering.

So, the next time you savour an olive or drizzling olive oil, remember: you’re not just indulging in a snack, you’re tasting a piece of ancient Greek history. 🫒
