October review. It was BOOtiful. And with two girls two and under, I’m two days behind in October posts (now three because the clock just ticked past midnight over here). Please forgive me just as I asked our girls to forgive me time and again for having to wait for food or even a proper spot to sleep on a journey from MAD-NYC-ATL-GUA-ATL-PIT-CMH and back. I’ll tell you all more about it one of these days. Meanwhile, I’m going to sleep while the babies sleep.

Shoulder season
____
It’s like Goldilocks in most of the world, not too hot and not too cold. It used to be one of the best times to nonrev but now flights are still full. While it seems some people still didn’t learn to wash their hands after COVID (gross!), many did indeed learn how to take action and travel. Plus, as an aviation industry family, it’s certainly good for business.

6 years ago, ironically to date, I published a blog on about the who, what, and where of travel planning. Now updated and available on , read it over as you decide “where to next?”

Of my almost 40-countries visited, there are several I’ve repeated - solo, as a couple, and as a family. This piece will help you get clarity on what’s best for your next trip.

There’s a reason the biggest airshow corresponds with Christmas in July!

Oshkosh Airventure is coming up! Are you going? Sadly we will not be there this year, but we will be reviving our sister site for the event! Stay tuned for some new items and deals starting this week. Sorry for our absence there; we’ve had our hands full growing these lovely little humans!

Photos from Eva’s first air show at Sun ‘n Fun when she was just 7 weeks old. And scroll through to see her most recent show at Cuatro Vientos in Madrid with her little sister, Emma. Thank goodness the girls like airplanes as much as we do! 😅❤️ via .app

Salty kisses and sandy toes
_____
Eva turned 5 months old, two years ago, down the Shore, where I grew up. She got her ears pierced and rode the Ferris wheel, Angel played mini golf for the first time, and we made great memories with the family.

We usually prioritized a really good first nap. We’d walk her in the stroller to sleep or we would leave her in the apartment with my mom and use the time to get out ourselves. After the nap, we would hit the beach and her second nap was often under the umbrella. Stroller fans and a misting water bottle were lifesavers for heat and humidity. She was exclusively breastfeeding, so milk was always ready on demand.

Because we flew standby, we arrived a couple days early to NYC before the rental was available in Ocean City. For the jet lag, we just cut the time difference in half the first day (3 hours instead of 6; so her 8pm bedtime became 5pm, which meant a 5am wake up the next day). The second day, with an early morning, meant one extra nap, and then her regular bedtime at 8ish and we were good to go.

South Jersey (where locations are identified by miles on the Garden State Parkway, not the Turnpike) is a great place for a young family, but it’s hard to get to when traveling internationally (2ish hours bus from NYC to Atlantic City and another half hour to Ocean City or nearly an hour to Stone Harbor, depending on traffic). All summer places rent Saturday to Saturday. Arrive super early to beat the traffic and take yourself out for lunch and order the pork roll (a Philadelphia classic) for your breakfast meat with eggs.

Rent a surrey and eat Johnson’s popcorn in Ocean City. Ride the rides. Just don’t go too deep in the ocean or the lifeguards will blow their whistle. Head further south to Stone Harbor for more space between your beach blankets and safe roads to bicycle like you’d imagine from an old American film. Further south, Wildwood is a must on Mondays to see the Soul Cruisers, a 1970s cover band. The amusement park there is also a thrill for kids and adults (recommended over age 8 to enjoy it fully). And the southernmost point is Cape May (continued in comments)

The days are long, but the years are short, they say. Here is Eva at 7 weeks and then at 20 months. Same hotel.

We love The Westin at the DTW airport, especially with a view over the ramp where I used to work. (Non-aviation folks, the ramp is where the airplanes park). And if there is no room available with a view, just go to the pool. The kid in all of us will be thrilled to make a splash and watch the airplanes move about.

Note, this is not an add, but we are thankful for an airline rate there. Anyone working in aviation should always ask for an airline rate. You may be pleasantly surprised. Just give them a call and make sure you have your ID at checkin.

The North Sea
_____
The beach is probably not what you think of when you think of Amsterdam/Holland/The Netherlands. We spent three nights in Noordjwik, the weekend of the flower parade and enjoyed a lovely Sunday brunch at Branding, right on the beach.

Traveling with two, two and under, sometimes means you have to divide and conquer. So while Emma was eating, Eva enjoyed the swings in the sunshine. She is definitely my daughter, because she always wants to go higher.

Do you
_____
wait for a Monday, or a new month, or a new year to start a new habit? Well, it’s June, so we goes nothing. Or everything. This is us. Swipe to see us seven years ago in the same place. We always wanted to return to Amsterdam. And so we did, with the girls. Now we have two littles. You’ve all seen Eva on here. Emma joined us in January and now we are complete. Eva loves airplanes as much as us (thank goodness! 😅) and she is an incredible big sister. Emma is completely enamored by her big sister.

If Eva means “life” and Emma means “complete,” well, there you have it. The only thing missing is sleep (for the adults here). 😉

Stay tuned for more. For real this time. I’m not working this month (more on that later) so I am thoroughly enjoying reliving the past two years with Eva while racking my brain thinking “what did Eva do” with everything that Emma is now experiencing. It’s amazing how quickly we forget things. That alone may be reason enough to share here. To remember. And maybe help someone else along the way. Six months ago, one of us said we would not travel with kids for another 5 years. Well, we’ve been to Morocco and Holland and travel to the USA next week.

Throwback to last summer in New Jersey. Traveling with a five-month old was much easier than traveling with a 15-month old (last month). At five months, Eva wasn’t mobile and she was exclusively breastfeeding, so she had food on demand anytime, anywhere. She wasn’t sleeping through the night yet (we sleep trained her after our summer travels, at 6 months, but her schedule was reliable, with two naps and one night feeding. Best of all, she slept great on the plane!

One of our earliest lessons in traveling with a child was not to over schedule the day. We’ve never been big on full itineraries for travel. But when you travel with family, especially those who live far away, it’s easy to try to do too much. Take it easy and everyone will be happier. Quality over quantity.

We got outside every morning, usually for a walk on the Ocean City boardwalk. This was Eva and Angel’s first surrey ride! We tried to have Eva’s morning nap in the apartment before our lunch. A good first nap often made for a much better day. After lunch, we’d hit the beach with lots of shade and she would usually take a nap with the sounds of the waves (and Oscar Peterson Trio on the iPhone since we wanted to introduce her to good music early) and a fresh sea breeze. Then it was showers for all and off to dinner. If we had to drive to dinner, we would eat early to avoid a third nap in the car that ruined bedtime. If we walked to dinner, we’d eat late and let her sleep in the stroller and roll with the punches.

We won’t be heading to New Jersey this summer, but we do look forward to returning to my home state in the future, especially when Eva can enjoy the amusement parks!

Stay tuned to see where else we’ve been and where we are going. Meanwhile, tell us in the comments where you’ve traveled with infants and toddlers and at what ages!

The best New Years of her life.
__________
Eva slept through all of the fireworks, savored every bite given to her, and played all afternoon. May we all embark on the new year the way Eva embraces the day.

Begin every day with a smile.
Reconsider expectations.
Be true to oneself.
Play nice.
Embrace change.
Change your perspective.
Appreciate the little things.
Laugh. Cry. Laugh more.
Fall down once, get up twice.
Stay active.
Be curious.
Love.

Happy birthday to the best half of - ! I love you! Cheers to another trip around the sun ☀️🥰😘😘😘😘😘
