In late afternoon, the sun is caught on beautiful ridges of sand that spread across the dune field of White Sands National Park.

These ripples are formed by “saltation,” the bouncing motion of sand pushed by wind over an uneven surface. As the sand bounces, inconsistencies begin to form on the surface of the dune. More sand builds up behind these areas of inconsistency, forming long ridges of sand with troughs in between.

These small disharmonies in the motion of wind and sand together create intricate patterns that stretch out in all directions. Much like the larger dune field, ripples of sand merge, split, and slowly creep across the land.

Many people have expressed interest in helping those suffering as a result of the extreme wildfires and flash flooding. New Mexicans and all of our other neighbors are extremely generous with their time, goods, services and money during emergencies and times of disaster. At this time, however, there is not a need for donated items or unaffiliated volunteers.

The immediate needs of the residents who are displaced from their homes are being fulfilled by the American Red Cross, Southern Baptist Convention, Samaritan's Purse, Faith Based Organizations and other amazing community partners.

If the situation changes, a list of donation needs will be developed and widely publicized.

Monetary donations made to the Community Foundation of Lincoln County are still graciously accepted.

🌊 Las Cruces: join us for "Healthy Waters, Healthy Futures" - Part 1 of a two-part series on the challenges and opportunities facing the Rio Grande and underground aquifers that sustain our community and environment!

Wednesday, June 26th, 6:00-8:30 PM
NMSU Las Cruces - Domenici Hall, Room 106
Free and open to the public

We're screening "Requiem for a River," a thought-provoking documentary by Mary Patierno that explores the story of the Rio Grande in New Mexico and the river communities building a blueprint for more equitable resiliency during a future of climate uncertainty. This film is a powerful tool for building understanding around the pressing water issues faced by communities in the Lower Rio Grande.

After the screening, join an interactive discussion with the filmmaker and water advocates about upcoming public input on New Mexico's regional water planning roadmap. Learn about the July regional water planning open house and how you can shape the future of water in the Lower Rio Grande.

This event is for everyone who cares about the health and sustainability of our communities and the Rio Grande. Be part of the conversation as we build a shared understanding of the water challenges we face and find solutions together. Your voice matters in shaping the path forward!
