On almost every SF City Tour that I have conducted over the last year, there seems to have been at least one (usually more) guest who asks how is it that we go in a 360 degree loop around the city for four hours or more and they don't see the filthy streets, homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks, and generally beat up nasty city that they have been hearing about on the news. I typically respond that we do still have a homeless and drug problem but that the news media has been reaching new heights in exaggeration for reasons undisclosed.

This advertising agency has done something brilliant and I hope that it gets enough air time to make the doom and gloom for SF people take a breath and stop the bashing/bullying.

Doom is everywhere you look in Duncan Channon’s San Francisco office. There's the circular Doom Spiral Bar. There’s the Doom Spiral bus prop in the corner. Even the walls are painted a specific shade called Doom Blue. But the theme is meant to skewer the city’s critics.

I met a wonderful group from Europe at San Francisco International Airport yesterday and took them on a whirl wind tour of the City before depositing them at their hotel. They were staying near Union Square so on my way back to the BART train to go home, I walked by the Cable Car turn around. Yesterday was cold, wet and windy in San Francisco but the views of the lights on Powell Street and the Cable Cars were fantastic during the rain storm!

Our beloved Green Goddess Crab Salad is back by popular demand and we are celebrating her 100th birthday this Wednesday, August 23, at the Garden Court!

The original Green Goddess dressing recipe is credited to the hotel's executive chef in 1923, Philip Roemer. The combination of creamy textures and herbal freshness contribute to its unique and appealing flavor profile.

Over the years, the Green Goddess dressing became a staple of salads and other dishes. Many variations of the dressing exist today, but its history remains rooted in its origin at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

To join in on the celebration, make a reservation for lunch on August 23!

I am proud to be a member of the San Francisco Tour Guide Guild and am currently acting as its Secretary as a member of the Board of Trustees. Yesterday, the Northern California Concierge Association (NCCA) was hosting its first trade show for tourism related organizations to meet, share information and make connections for future business possibilities. Due to COVID, it had been three years since this event was last held and while there were a lot of new faces at the tables around the room, it was fun to also see some people that I haven't seen since 2019. All of the Board members took time to come and staff the SFTGG table during the day. This is a photo of me and my friend Clemencia Colmenares (Treasurer) as we took the first shift in the morning.

Had a tour to lead this morning in SF. Got there early & stopped at a Denny’s for A cup of coffee… a “live” waitress took my order… a few minutes later my order was brought to the table by this robot… it announced to me that I should take my order from its tray… on occasion I have observed small robots scurrying down the sidewalk near the baseball stadium & I know there have been other robotic coffee shops & cafes but this morning’s server @ Denny’s caught me off guard 😮

Carville, San Francisco. The bohemian beach neighborhood created by San Francisco artists, and made out of discarded railcars that stood from 1895-1930’s. Yes, this is a magical piece of SF History. In 1895 the Market Street Railway Company began selling old abandoned horse-drawn railcars, “$20 ...

TIME magazine solicited nominations of places from their international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those places who were offering new and exciting experiences. The results were what they believe to be the 50 greatest places to visit in the world. Five of them are in the USA. San Francisco is one of the five US destinations. As I am originally from Michigan, I was also pleased that Detroit was among the five as well!

A frequently asked question by guests who are touring San Francisco is related to why there are so many homeless people. I also hear from people in other major cities that they too are seeing more homeless people - it is not just a San Francisco phenomenon.

Here is a link to an article that offers an interesting look back at how we may have migrated to the state we are in today. Of course, because it is from an organization here in SF there is a bit more local detail but the statistics from across the USA are certainly interesting.

History of S.R.O. residential hotels in San Francisco Single-Room Occupancy hotels (S.R.O.’s) or “Residential Hotels,” as they are commonly known, are a vital part of San Francisco’s housing stock and have been throughout the city’s history. Indeed, they have been important in cities acros...

Took a drive to Pacific Grove last weekend to see the Monarch Butterflies. This was my first visit and it was pretty amazing and interesting. From what I have been told, the last couple of years there were very few butterflies over wintering at this location and there is great concern about making sure that this species remains viable. This year there were more visiting so that is a good sign.

They just hang in clusters on trees and bushes, flutter around in the sunshine and apparently do a little bit of mating when the mood strikes them :-D

Interesting facts about these butterflies: They migrate down to the central coast of California from Canada when the weather gets cold (fall season) and stay until things begin to again warm up in the spring. Normally they only live about six weeks so every year when they migrate, the ones migrating have NEVER been to the location before. When they are migrating their life spans can increase to six months!

Here are some photos that I took on Saturday, January 22.
