In this Bendi Stories episode, we travel to the enchanting Huangshan, Anhui, famed for its majestic granite peaks and ethereal landscapes that have inspired generations of Chinese artists.

We had the privilege of speaking with Mao Yinfu, a world-renowned painter who calls these mist-covered peaks home. He shared the inspiration behind his stunning ink paintings, revealing the techniques and philosophies that guide his artistic journey.

In Huangshan, Mao Yinfu's paintings intertwine the mountain landscapes with Huizhou’s traditional architecture.

📍Yuanyang Rice Terraces, Yunnan Province

In the heart of Yunnan Province, the Yuanyang rice terraces are a marvel of both nature and human ingenuity. These terraces, carved by the Hani people over centuries, are not only a testament to their agricultural skill but also serve as a vital part of their daily life. During the rainy season, when the terraces are flooded, they transform into shimmering mirrors reflecting the sky. But beyond their beauty, these terraces sustain the local communities. In an age-old tradition, the Hani people catch fish in the terraces, a sustainable practice that ensures food security while maintaining the delicate ecological balance.

The synergy between the people and the land is evident in every step of the process. As the farmers wade through the water, their movements are both practical and poetic, illustrating a deep connection to the environment. This sustainable method of fishing also enriches the soil, preparing it for the next planting season. The Yuanyang terraces are more than just a UNESCO World Heritage site—they are a living, breathing landscape that embodies the resilience and wisdom of the Hani people.

📍 Stone Forest, Yunnan Province

Yunnan’s Stone Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a natural wonder over 270 million years in the making. These towering limestone formations, shaped by millennia of erosion, create an otherworldly landscape that has inspired countless legends. The Yi people, who have lived here for generations, regard the Stone Forest as sacred, with each stone pillar said to represent ancient ancestors. Walking through these natural stone ‘trees’ is like stepping into a different world, where history and nature converge in breathtaking beauty.

One of the projects we’re most excited about this year is our expert-led Herpetological Expedition—the first of its kind in China! Created in partnership with Serpentine Expeditions, this groundbreaking endeavor is the result of over a year of meticulous planning, shared expertise, and the passion of both the WildChina and Serpentine teams.

This small-group adventure, designed for intrepid explorers, will follow the path of some of the Middle Kingdom’s most coveted herpetological treasures, including the elusive Mangshan Pit Viper. The journey is scheduled for August 2025, exact dates will be announced soon.

In the meantime, three herping experts who will lead the expedition Michael Ring, Ian Breland, and Jaime Culebras are on a survey trip to test the itinerary firsthand and explore some of China’s most diverse and stunning snake habitats. Their route will take them from the vibrant urban outskirts of Hong Kong to the misty bamboo forests of the Tianmushan Biosphere Reserve, and through the dramatic karst landscapes of the Mangshan Nature Reserve. They are documenting their journey and the snakes they encounter along the way, and we can’t wait for them to return and share their discoveries with you.

To fuel your interest in China’s reptiles and our upcoming expedition, check out Michael Ring’s article on CHINA'S MOST INTERESTING SNAKES: https://wildchina.com/2024/05/the-most-interesting-snakes-in-china/

Tibetan monastic debates are a powerful blend of philosophy, tradition, and spiritual training. Monks use these lively exchanges to test their understanding of Buddhist teachings, engaging in both intellectual and physical challenges. The strong gestures and loud claps are not just for show—they are methods for sharpening the mind and deepening spiritual understanding. Each clap and gesture serves to challenge and emphasize key points of Buddhist philosophy.

Our Head of LATAM, Andres Vargas, documented the vivid experience of this ancient tradition on his recent trip to Tibet with our travelers.

As a women-led organization, we believe that empowering women and promoting gender equality are essential for building a more just and inclusive world. To support this, we’ve developed our Nüshu (女书) program in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality.

Nüshu, meaning “women’s script,” is the only known writing system used exclusively by women. It originated in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, among the Yao ethnic group, where women, often excluded from formal education, used Nüshu to communicate, write letters, create poetry, and document their lives. With only 600-700 characters, Nüshu became a powerful tool for expressing resilience, solidarity, and creativity. These pieces often reflected the daily lives, hardships, and emotions of the women.

We take students to Jianyong County to learn about how Nüshu has become a symbol of female empowerment. Through this journey, students witness how women forged their own path of expression in a restrictive society, offering inspiration for today’s efforts toward gender equality.

📍Xidi Village, Anhui

A visit to Xidi Village is like stepping into a living canvas of Chinese history and culture. Time slows down in this serene setting, allowing for a deep appreciation of the artistry of ancient architecture, the beauty of rural landscapes, and the deep cultural roots that have shaped this remarkable village. The village is famed for its traditional Anhui architecture—white-washed walls, grey-tiled roofs, and intricately carved wooden beams. These houses, often built by wealthy merchant families, reflect the elegance and artistry of a bygone era.

📜 Interesting Facts:

▪️Xidi was founded during the Northern Song Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties thanks to its strategic location on an ancient trade route. The wealth accumulated by merchants allowed for the construction of the village’s elaborate buildings.
▪️The village layout resembles the shape of an ox, which is considered a symbol of prosperity and longevity in Chinese culture. The “head” is represented by a large stone archway, the “body” by the village’s main street, and the “tail” by a stream flowing through the village.

🏯What to Do:

▪️Wander narrow lanes to discover hidden courtyards and ancient stone bridges.
▪️Meet local villagers whose families have lived here for generations.
▪️Visit ancestral halls like the Hu Wenguang Memorial Archway, honoring Confucian traditions.

We recommend including Xidi, along with other nearby villages and Huangshan Mountain, in your Anhui journey for a richer taste of the region’s cultural and historical charm. Send us a message to start planning your trip and experience the beauty of Xidi and beyond!

Every twelve years, the Miao people come together for the Guzang Festival—a vibrant celebration that lasts up to 15 days. Deeply rooted in tradition, the name “Guzang” combines “gu” (drum) and “zang” (to bury), emphasizing the festival’s centerpiece: the ceremonial drums.

Preparations start two years in advance, with each festival hosted by a different Miao village. In between these grand celebrations, a smaller, annual “Small Guzang Festival” takes place, lasting four days, featuring different themes each year.

At the heart of the Guzang Festival is the drum ceremony, where large, intricately decorated drums are played to symbolize unity and the collective spirit of the community. This powerful drumming is accompanied by traditional Miao music, singing, and dancing, with participants dressed in their most colorful and elaborate costumes.

The festival is also a time of deep spiritual significance, as rituals and offerings are made to honor ancestors and deities, invoking blessings and good fortune for the years to come. The Guzang Festival is more than just a celebration—it’s a profound expression of cultural identity, reverence, and communal harmony.

Many thanks to our Program Manager, Daizy Dai, for capturing this beautiful video during her trip to Guizhou.

🌿 Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at WildChina. While many know us for our exciting travel adventures, we also offer educational programs that dive deep into environmental and social issues. These programs are all about giving students the tools they need to make a real impact. Check out some recent highlights:

1️⃣ Ancient Village Restoration: Students got hands-on experience restoring a forgotten mining village in Western Beijing. They made coal bricks, joined in traditional games, and learned about local herbs from an expert guide.

2️⃣ Service Learning: Students teamed up with visually impaired individuals for a guided walk, offering companionship and support. It was a fantastic way to build empathy and understand the importance of inclusivity and kindness.

3️⃣ Mangrove Conservation: In Xiamen, students worked with local researcher Mr. Chen to plant mangrove saplings, study ecosystem health, and share their findings. This hands-on experience not only taught them about coastal ecosystems but also sparked a passion for environmental care.

We believe that these initiatives are more than just educational journeys, they’re about giving students practical skills, fostering empathy, and inspiring them to champion a sustainable future.

🎁Choosing the perfect gift from China can be a fun adventure. While traditional options like embroidered fans, calligraphy sets, silk garments, and jade jewelry are always appreciated, there’s a more unconventional choice that stands out.

🐼Our Head of Leisure Department, Jenny Zhao, received an unusual gift from our friend and partner agent – Panda Poo Tea, or Eco Panda Tea! This tea comes from the Ya’an mountainous region of Sichuan, where it is cultivated using panda dung as an organic fertilizer. Since pandas primarily eat wild bamboo and absorb only about 30% of its nutrients, the dung is rich in beneficial compounds for the tea plants. This practice not only helps produce healthy tea but also showcases sustainable agriculture through the use of organic fertilizers. Plus, it makes a great and memorable gift from China, perfect for tea lovers and anyone who values sustainability.

📍Yangchan Village, Anhui Province

Tucked away on a mountain slope in Anhui Province, Yangchan is a hidden gem that offers an authentic glimpse into traditional rural life in China. Accessible only by a narrow, winding road, the village’s terraced layout and stunning scenery against the mountain backdrop create a tranquil and mesmerizing panorama. Unlike the more famous Hongcun or Huangling villages, Yangchan remains relatively undiscovered.

The village is renowned for its earthen buildings, crafted using traditional wattle and daub techniques. One of Yangchan’s most charming traditions is shaiqiu, or drying crops outside in the fall. This time-honored practice involves spreading harvested crops like grains, vegetables, and fruits across mats or bamboo racks to sun-dry them. The process not only preserves the crops for long-term storage but also transforms the village into a colorful tapestry of drying produce.

The village’s remote location has kept its historical charm intact, making it a perfect spot for visitors to enjoy a peaceful retreat and experience the authentic simplicity of rural life in China.

Ready to explore the timeless charm of Yangchan Village? Reach out to us today to start planning your journey into the heart of China’s rural heritage!
