As you may have guessed, I'm Alice. So let's start from the beginning: I was born in Australia but we moved away when I was very small (way before I could even hope for that excellent accent) and moved to very VERY rural France. There I learnt French and eventually Spanish, Italian and a bit of German. Thanks to all of these languages I gained a taste for foreign cultures and travel at a young age

. At 19 I moved back to the UK to go to university, where I studied French and Spanish and then took up philosophy as well. On my year abroad I became a teaching assistant in the South Western Spanish city of Badajoz, giving me the perfect location to dip in and out of Andalucia and Portugal. Thanks to my salary as an "auxiliar" I was able to save up and go Interrailing in the summer of 2015 which instead of satisfying my wanderlust only fuelled the flames. Having recently graduated, I have secured a job as a teaching assistant in Yangon, in Myanmar which I intend to use as a base for more extensive trips around South East Asia. The end game is to become totally nomadic, but that's a little while off! Until then I'd like to share my knowledge and experiences of the places I have been to so far and post regular updates about WHERE ALICE IS NOW.

Have you ever returned from that marvelous vacation only to come home and find that no one is interested in hearing about your amazing adventures? Research has shown that it goes deeper than jealousy and there is a social price to pay for your extraordinary experiences.

In a hostel in Bagan, Myanmar, I had a heated discussion with a male canadian solo traveller about what solo female travellers have to constantly be aware of and the measures we take to stay safe at all times because it’s ultimately our responsibility, no matter what happens to us. He ended up listening to me get more and more frustrated at his shortsightedness and “well I haven’t come across that”, eventually saying “you’re pretty intense”. I replied “being a solo female traveller is pretty intense”.
If we let the atrocities carried out AGAINST women stop us from living our lives, we would live in our homes in fear.
Some of my greatest accomplishments and experiences happened because I had the courage to do this. Every solo female traveller is BRAVE, because we know what COULD happen, but we value our freedom too much to let our fears dictate our life.

“Why was she backpacking alone?” “What was she doing meeting a man on Tinder?” The victim blaming I’ve seen online this week, for Grace Millane, the

Once filled up with petrol however, you soon find yourself zooming through the most incredible scenery; vast green planes set the stage for almighty stone behemoths whose grandeur challenge the likes of Avatar’s floating mountains. Within a day you have a real sense of experiencing genuine Laos: rice fields being cultivated by oxen, wandering water buffalo, mountain villages where the children will run out to greet you with a “Sabaidee” as you zoom past in complete awe at how perfect a moment can be

France will always be a very special destination for me; my sister and I used to run freely through woodlands and fields for hours at a time fearlessly, learning true freedom (and the responsibility that comes with it) and a oneness with nature that I still pride myself on.

Why do people talk about “finding themselves” travelling? The “self” certainly isn’t hidden away in the sands of Haad Rin beach on Koh Pha Ngan (the location of the infamous Full Moon parties).

Always on the road (well, sometimes metaphorically) 👣🌊🌍 3 years ago my best friend Heather and I were on a ferry from Southern Italy heading toward the Greek island of Corfu 🇬🇷 it took us 2 ferries (one overnight crossing) and 2 busses to get there but it was one of our favourite stops along our European trail 💞🍋🐟

We meet in an airport, in a hostel, on a boat, a beach, a bus. You are alone and so am I. In that solitude, we are together. Where are you from? Where have you been? Oh I went there too, what did you think? The conversations we later mock over a local beer that slowly shape our spatial connections.

Having spent most of 2017 in hot, humid Asia, and though it was a stroke of genius to choose the polar opposite for my future, that's not to say it wasn't a tad of a shock moving on to a lifestyle of snow, freezing temperatures and incessant skiing. I know I've been pretty distant from whereisalicenow.com, but I hope you'll understand why by the end of this post.

Having just started a new (and very demanding) job, in an environment that is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum of what I’m used to, I’m afraid I haven’t had time to update the blog but I promise that once I’m settled I will be writing and posting more often. Until then, here’s a quick update on my whereabouts. Pretty neat huh?

Vietnam, a country that I found strikingly East meets West, where Chinese and colonial French influences intermingle to create something truly unique. Vietnam has vast cityscapes, rural adventures and some damn good food to name the least. I was lucky enough to spend a whole month travelling North to South with my friend Tim, and documented my time there, the ups and downs, highlights and challenges, and everything in between.

I'm finally sitting down to write the explanatory article for my recent Vietnam film (that you can rewatch here: https://youtu.be/xTO6fcNUavY ) ! In the meantime, here is a peek into my week of truly discovering , from temples to tuk tuks, mega malls to nighttime bike tours; it has truly surprised and enchanted me (since I decided to give it a chance!) 🇹🇭🌆✨
