Right now I'm not posting photos of Maui because I have a local family staying in my condo. But Maui needs you to visit. Please visit responsibly, stay away from the burn zone, be respectful and practice aloha. Tip generously, volunteer if you are able, be kind and know that those you are interacting with have most likely lost a loved one or their home.

I am not posting photos of Maui right now as my place is occupied by local residents. But I wanted to share some shell finds. I love walking on the beach and enjoy hearing the waves crashing and the sea foam. The peace I feel is like none other. Sending my love to Maui for now.

GOVERNOR GREEN ANNOUNCES OPENING OF ROAD TO LAHAINA

HONOLULU ̶ Gov. Josh Green today announced that after direct discussions with Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen; Maui County Fire and Public Safety Department Chief Bradley Ventura; Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier, and Dual Status Commander of Joint Task Force-50 Brigadier General Stephen Logan, the road to Lahaina, Honoapiʻilani Highway at Maʻalaea, will open starting at 6 tonight, Aug. 15, 2023, to West Maui residents, first responders and West Maui employees.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug.16, 2023, the road to Lahaina will open to all motorists daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Access from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. will be limited to West Maui residents, first responders and West Maui employees.

Road to Lahaina Schedule – Starting Tomorrow:

Open daily for all motorists 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Late-night access from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. will be limited to West Maui residents, first responders and West Maui employees
State officials are urging the public to access West Maui only if necessary to live, work, or volunteer.

Gov. Green asks that the public exercise caution when returning to West Maui. “We are prioritizing the reopening of this passage to ensure access for first responders, medical professionals, residents of West Maui, and the public.”

With the opening of the Honoapiʻilani Highway, please consider allowing time for those who have the highest need for access, such as those seeking medical assistance, returning residents of West Maui, first responders, and essential workers.

The road will be open until further notice. Motorists should expect delays because some areas still contain debris and the highway will be restricted to one lane at certain areas.

Some areas of Maui are still without power. Please access the area only if necessary and above all, drive with aloha and compassion.

The impact zone remains off-limits due to the active search and recovery efforts. Again, there may be debris on the road, and areas where traffic builds. Please be vigilant as you drive.

This is a scientific study being conducted now...
The dots are where the tagged tiger sharks like to hang out, so, dear visitors, please swim along the side of the reef and NOT out to sea.

Scientists started the study by tagging 18 large tiger sharks taken from Maui waters with satellite tracking devices. Last month they tagged eight off Oahu and mapped their tracks. (A total of 24 were tagged off Maui and 11 off Oahu, but some were fixed with only an acoustic device; others were double-tagged with acoustic and satellite devices.)

Each time a tagged shark was detected by satellite, it received a circle on the map. The study's mapping shows waters between Maui, Lanai and Kahoolawe clogged with overlapping circles. Numerous detections were found around Molo­kai as well.

* IMPACTS... Flood prone roads and other low lying areas may be
closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas
may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to
rapid runoff.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Tropical Storm Calvin will produce periods of heavy rainfall
over all islands in Maui and Hawaii Counties from Tuesday
evening through Wednesday afternoon. Excessive rainfall may
lead to flooding conditions and landslides over steep
terrain, especially along east and southeast facing slopes.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
