Cross Country Road Trip Day 2:
St Louis, MO to Burlington, CO

Stopped by Kansas City, MO to check out their Central Library parking garage. One entire side is giant books; even the stairs were books!

We then visited the Legoland Discovery Center in Kansas City. Of course, little man was stoked!

Wilson, Kansas is known as the Czech capital of Kansas. It’s a quaint little town with really old buildings and industrial equipment. It’s also home to the World’s Largest Czech Egg! There are beautiful painted eggs all around town. Our son said it was like an Easter egg hunt!

As we left Wilson, dark clouds started rolling in. We experienced crazy winds and blinding rain, and I legit thought we were outrunning a tornado! When in Kansas… 🌪️

Earlier in the day, we stopped by an old concrete tee p*e built back in the 1920s before the Wigwam Villages were built along Route 66 (one of which we stayed at on the way TO Florida a few weeks ago). Stay tuned for some cool Route 66 photos!

We outran the storm and made it to the World’s Largest Easel (complete with a Van Gogh painting) just as the sun was setting.

Just after the Van Gogh painting, we crossed the border into Colorado and called it a day.

Road Trip from the mountains of Georgia back to California!

Day 1: Helen, GA to St Louis, MO

We left behind the beautiful mountains and waterfalls of North Georgia and stopped by Paducah, Kentucky to admire the riverside murals and to pick up a Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail junior ranger book which our little man completed on the way to St Louis.

Took a little detour to Metropolis, IL - “Hometown of Superman”.

We got to the Gateway Arch in St Louis just as it started sprinkling, and then grabbed a quick pic in front of the World’s Largest Chess Piece before heading to our hotel for the night.

We haven’t posted much this summer, as our travel plans shifted from heading up the coast of California to driving all the way to the other coast to be with family. We’re making our way back west now after spending several weeks in Florida, followed by a few days in the Georgia mountains. Yesterday’s route took us through 5 states (Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri)! Stay tuned for fun places we stopped along the way.

Hope you’ve all made wonderful memories with family and friends this summer! ☀️

Spent a few days housesitting in Santa Barbara (CA) this past week. Explored outside of the Mission and a little bit of the downtown area. Love the eclectic and colorful architecture! Oh, and if you ever find yourself in Santa Barbara, treat yourself and stop by Tondi Gelato. You’ll thank us later! 🍨

Has anyone been to The Sphere in Las Vegas? It’s a music and entertainment venue that just opened in September of last year, but honestly, you don’t have to go inside to be entertained. It’s mesmerizing to watch from afar, especially at night!

PS - If you’re a fan of The Eagles, they just announced a Fall residency at The Sphere.

📣 Attention: California Friends!!

Did you know you can check out a state park pass from the local library?! We currently have one checked out, as we have several times this past year. The funding for this wonderful program is in jeopardy, and unless new funding is identified, libraries will not receive new passes for checkout after this year. Read more below and learn how you can quickly encourage your legislator (before June 15th!) to restore funding for this popular and effective park access program.

Happy Earth Day, Friends! 🌏 ♥️ 🌳

Wanted to share a few pics from a park we discovered just last week that’s less than 30 minutes from our house. I LOVE that we’re still discovering new-to-us places in our own backyard!

For us, we celebrate Earth “Day” year-round. We’re always looking for opportunities to get out and explore our beautiful planet. We also look for ways to play our part in conserving and protecting the place we call home, whether that be reducing our single-use plastic usage, limiting waste, handwashing most of our dishes, recycling, collecting food scraps for composting, making sure to turn off all lights and electronics when not in use, etc. Even the smallest changes can make a BIG impact! ♻️

Let’s see those eclipse photos! 🌙

My dad and I went out for a bike ride this morning and were stoked to have been provided free viewing glasses for the eclipse by OCParks when we arrived at the trailhead. We stopped by rock cave and watched til max coverage (which in Southern California was around 50%). Did you catch the eclipse? From where?

Share your photos below. ⬇️ 😎 🌙

When grandpa comes for a visit, a boat ride is usually in order! This time, in beautiful San Diego! We saw seals on buoys, Point Loma Lighthouse, the Coronado Bay Bridge, the USS Midway, Navy ships, the beautiful skyline, and more! Following our time on the water, we went to Cabrillo National Monument to explore the tidepools and enjoy the views from a different perspective!

Hiked another slot canyon yesterday. This time in Cardiff (San Diego). Annie’s Canyon Trail is a short, but moderate hike through a very narrow slot canyon utilizing ladders and stairs to get you to the top for stunning views over San Elijo Lagoon. Following our scramble through the canyon, we checked out the nature center and embarked on a fun nature scavenger hunt.

Anza Borrego Desert State Park has a really incredible slot canyon hike. The full loop is just over 2 miles, but since we visited “The Slot” at the end of a long day, we decided to hike the trail counterclockwise and head straight into the canyon, then turn around and head back. It still took about an hour as there was a little bit of rock scrambling and we stopped often to check out the canyon features. At some points the canyon was as narrow as a shoe (see pic below) and you had to turn your body sideways and shimmy through. So incredible to have places like this to explore not too far away.

Took a trip out to the desert this past week to check out the wildflower bloom. It’s always fun exploring the massive metal sculptures in Borrego Springs. Artist Ricardo Breceda has created and installed over 130 sculptures throughout the desert landscape. Everything from prehistoric creatures like tapiers, mammoths, sabertooth cats, raptors, and aiolornis to animals that still roam the planet today, like big horn sheep, camels, grasshoppers, and scorpions. (Stay tuned for wildflower and slot canyon photos!)

If we’re family/friends, you’ve likely already seen this post, but it’s too cool not to share here too! And if you’ve been following us for a while, you’re probably aware that Sam is a Sci-Fi writer. 🪐 📖 So, while this isn’t exactly travel-related, it’s a story about Sam’s creative work traveling across the cosmos. 💫🌌

This morning at 2:18 am in Cape Canaveral, Florida (where Sam and I were both born) a rocket blasted off. 🚀 Onboard that rocket were three of Sam’s Sci-Fi short stories! So, his creative work has been launched into space and is on its way TO THE MOON! 🌕

Wait… what?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ll explain…

The inaugural launch of United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket is carrying the Peregrine lunar lander. The lander holds a digital time capsule that will remain on the moon after a soft landing (on February 23rd) in the region of Sinus Viscotatis, near the Gruithuisen Domes.

The time capsule contains a selection of digitally preserved artwork and literature from Earth. Three of Sam’s sci-fi stories were included in an anthology called the Future Chronicles which is included in that digital collection. All works have been converted to a storage medium called NanoFiche. It’s an analog technology storing orders of magnitude more content in the same space as microfiche. It’s impervious to temperature and humidity, and has a near-zero degradation factor. So, it should withstand the elements for tens of thousands of years, or more!

Pretty cool, huh?! 🚀 📖 🌕

Petroglyphs can be found throughout Southern Utah as evidence and testament to the peoples who lived in this area hundreds of years ago. The most recognized group of Native Americans is the Ancestral Puebloan, or Anasazi.

We did a 3-mile hike on the Anasazi Valley Trail in Santa Clara just outside of St George and had to do a little rock scrambling to find these treasures.

What do you think they mean?

Kolob Canyon is a portion of Zion National Park where only a fraction of park visitors go. This entrance is about 40 miles away from the main entry point in Springdale (and doesn’t connect by roadway; only miles and miles of hiking trails).

The Kolob Canyon entrance was only a 25 minute drive from where we were staying, so we wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, the scenic drive through the canyon was closed due to a sinkhole in the road, but we were able access the trailhead along Taylor Creek.

It was chilly (low 30s F)! There was ice in the creek, which we had to cross over several times, and our son had a blast cracking the ice with rocks.

About a mile in, we came upon an old cabin, which we made our turn around point. The full hike is 5 miles roundtrip (out and back). The trail passes another cabin and terminates at a double-arched alcove, but we had been hiking all week and didn’t feel up for the full experience. 2.5 miles was a nice little jaunt for us through an often unseen side of Zion.
