The tomb of Julia Legare. One of the scariest and most disturbing stories to come from this church cemetery is that of young Julia Legare. Julia died at the age of 22 from diptheria and was supposedly laid to rest in the family mausoleum in 1852. Years later when the family opened the mausoleum to bury another family member, they discovered bones amid Julia's tattered burial dress near the door. Once, the door was found open which revealed scratch marks on the INSIDE from Julia trying to escape. Some members of the church closed and sealed the door only to find it open again. This happened several times and the door was finally taken down and placed along the side. When we visited, the door was not to be seen. I would have walked to the back, but, twice, I heard rustling in the woods. I thought it was my family trying to scare me, but discovered that they were still at the front of the church trying to decide what to eat for dinner. Needless to say, I did a speedy walk back to the car!

Botany Bay is by far one of the most beautiful places that we have visited along the South Carolina coast. It is a place that you'll never want to leave because it is so peaceful. When you visit, take all of the pictures that you desire, but do NOT take any of the gorgeous sea shells. Botany Bay is protected and there is a hefty fine if you take any with you.
