Scotland’s shyest residents? 🦡 Meet the badger – elusive, nocturnal, and surprisingly adorable! Even though they’re common across Scotland, spotting one in the wild is a real treat. Why?

Because these little diggers spend most of their time underground in their complex tunnel networks, known as setts.

If you're keen to see them, Scotland has two public badger hides - one in New Lanark (near Glasgow) and another in Boat of Garten in the Cairngorms. The best time to catch a glimpse? Late spring and early summer, when the newly-born badgers emerge for their first big adventures! 🌿

Fun fact: Badgers are Britain’s largest carnivores and have an appetite to match! They can gobble up hundreds of worms in a single night – along with the occasional birds’ eggs, small mammals, and even hedgehogs. 🐛

🐮 Did you know Highland cows have a thick double coat—the longest of any cattle breed? This keeps them cozy during Scotland’s chilly winters, and their iconic fringe (or 'dossan') even protects their eyes from rain and insects.

A true icon of the Highlands, and just as friendly as they are photogenic! 🌿

The Walkers Club

IT ALL STARTED WHEN…

My husband and I were talking to two hill walkers that had come in to our local pub one Friday evening. They had been walking all day on the first stage of the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Drymen.

Over the course of the day they had walked 19km/12 miles through beautiful scenery and a variety of weather(s) - a typical day in Scotland. They were tired but very satisfied that they had completed the first stage of their journey. Only seven more stages to go!

After a well deserved drink or two and having sampled some of the local whiskies, the walkers mentioned that they would have loved to capture their feelings, thoughts and memories of the day in a journal…
