The Essence is one of DarkoAudio's 10 must-hear active speakers. Not a bad place to be! Thank you for the inclusion!
Also note that the set Mr. Darko reviewed had an ES9010 DAC chip, not the substantially better ES9018. We've also made improvements to the driver since then, so we think he'd like the Essence even more now.

Over the past few weeks we've been working on a recommended albums list full of well recorded music across a wide range of genres.

We started this list as a response to all the poor recordings out there. Unfortunately, the majority of commercial recordings use a high amount of dynamic range compression so that they sound acceptable even on poor equipment and in noisy environments like cars and public spaces. The result is that the sound quality is far from being as good as it could be. This list features albums with a relatively small amount of compression used, sometimes none at all, so they sound truly impressive on a good sound system.

Feel free to check it out and enjoy some excellent quality music! We update it regularly, and we welcome your input if you think an album deserves to be on the list.

Another excellent documentary well worth watching, this one about the intersection of music, recording, and reproduction.

This short documentary is definitely worth watching. It's a little bit too much like an ad, but the message is good, and important. We can never emphasize enough how important source quality is in order to hear what the musicians intended, and to hear what your sound system is really capable of. If possible, listen to lossless files, or even better 24-bit files.

A lot of new 24-bit music added to the TIDAL Masters catalog lately. Sounds superb on the ESSENCE! If you've never heard the difference between 16 and 24-bit files, try listening again on a high-end system. You'll not only hear a substantial improvement, but also experience a far greater emotional connection with your music!
