The Outlandish Homestead My adventures homesteading in the suburbs on just over half an acre of land Welcome to my page! If it has anything to do with food, We'll discuss it!

It is dedicated to living a self-sustaining life as much as possible in the suburbs just South of Dayton, Ohio. I will share cooking hints, food preservation information, favorite recipes, gardening tips, Organic gardening, rabbiteering, being GMO-free, and more. I also maintain a page Sew It Goes Creations where I sell my home-made crafts and food goods. Every bit of money I make from my page supports my family and my mini-homestead.

I have been getting cherry tomatoes for almost six weeks but my first big tomato is blushing and I am extremely excited! I picked it to bring it inside away from the risk of marauding gangs of wildlife in the form of squirrels and chipmunks, and eagerly anticipate full ripeness so that it may be the first of many BLTs. I think it's a Brandywine Pink but something removed the label stick so I can't be 100% sure until it's in full color. The cuke will become cucumber dill sandwiches 🥪 and the cherry toms sliced up to eat in a bowl of cottage cheese.

This evening I pulled what carrots the squirrels had left me from this spring's planting (all of five of them 😭) and they're just a bite or two in size: one white, one yellow, and three orange. Tomorrow I will go plant seeds in the greenhouse for the back forty garden (it's only one 8'x4' and one 4x4' raised beds). Carrots will be direct seeded but the greenhouse will have green beans, broccoli, peas, herbs, cabbage, and a few other yummy veggies.

The pie pumpkins are branching out and have female flowers budding!
And my vegetable garden has lots of little peppers, pickle and salad cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes growing on the plants. Picked another salad cucumber today.💜 By the end of the first week of August I think we will begin having enough cukes harvested to begin pickling!

A bouquet of male pumpkin flowers.
I took my sharp tweezers out to the garden this morning and killed off more than half a dozen cucumber beetles sleeping in the different squash blooms, and a squash beetle I found on one leaf. A few days ago I surgically removed several squash vine borer grubs from my zucchini plants. Pests abound but my garden persists

The garden is coming along nicely! Lots of wee little fruitlings. Blueberries are pretty much done with only a few straggling berries left. Red Mulberries are likewise at the end of production while the whites are still going (not my trees; they're on the property line of my neighbor but I take what is hanging on my side and they don't use the fruit). My roma tomatoes are turning red and the little yellow sungold cherry tomatoes have been giving me 1-2 ripe ones per day for a week now. About to plant more green beans because of the squirrels and chipmunks digging, then "season" the garden with cayenne and red pepper flakes to deter them. My potted pumpkin vines are about to be separated into their own pots and placed out back where they can spread all they want to. Herbs and flowers are about to go into the greenhouse, which I need to move to get more sun.

Yellow tomatoes are lower in acid for those who may have digestive sensitivities to acidic foods. I like to grow many kinds of tomatoes for different flavors and purposes, and I just love the variegated colorful ones, but it has been a few years since I had this many - 15 different varieties! I expect to have fruits ready to sell the first week of July.

I do have a few smaller started plants still that are for sale for $1 each. Plant deep and fertilize well and you can grow your very own! Mostly San Marzano and super sweet 100 cherry, Roma, Cherokee Purple, salad cukes, habanero pepper, pie pumpkin.

Today my faithful dog supervised my picking of blueberries - the first harvest from our two mature bushes! We have been eating one or two at a time but this morning we had a whole bunch ripen at once! Do you like blueberries, or do you have a favorite berry/fruit?

This year's kitchen garden is planted! I have a few extra starts of several kinds which will be listed for sale for $1 each later this week, since they're still small. Plants will need fertilized when put into their permanent locations to grow.
I this bed are a dozen tomato varieties along with pickling and salad slicing cukes, green beans, a few sweet and hot pepper varieties, and yellow crookneck squash. Not shown are the pie pumpkins and watermelons planted elsewhere.

The mini greenhouse is set up and the shelves filled with trays of sown seeds! Today I planted slicing and cherry tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, salad and pickle cucumbers, zucchini and yellow crookneck squash, pie pumpkin (with large white and orange carving pumpkins being experimented with having been left intentionally to rot in my side yard), watermelon, green beans, cabbage, sweet corn, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, green bunching onion, and I direct sowed carrots, parsnip, and peas for my own use in my existing garden bed, covering with leaf mulch. Lettuce will go in next.
There will be plants available from today's planting in a couple of months!
