Due to recent changes in DOT rules we will no longer be purchasing airline tickets for clients. If you are a long time client, you are likely aware that we stopped selling "bundled" air and hotel packages years ago due to the increased prevelance of interruptions, delays, and cancelations which inevitably that necessitated extraordinary measures to make clients whole and ultimately created logistical nightmares for any land components bundled into the package (e.g. missed nights and tours requiring partial refunds) made worse by clients who did not purchase insurance.

New DOT rules require airlines to issue refunds for such delays and cancellations automatically but history has shown that airlines cannot always be trusted to do the right thing without a fight. Those same rules also stipulate that travel agencies issuing those tickets may also be liable. It is our position that the new rule is positive development for clients but nonetheless, we are small family-owned agency and cannot assume such risks so we have made the difficult decision to no longer book flights. What the new rule means for air travel booked through cruise lines remains unclear and we are seeking further guidance on that matter. It will likely depend on whether or not the cruise lines are assuming that risk or if it will be passed down to the agency.

If you typically purchase your flights throught the cruise line (this is a very small portion of our clientele), please inquire with us during your next booking. For everyone else, we will gladly provide you with flight recommendations to assist with your vacation planning but you will be asked to purchase those tickets on your own going forward.

We appreciate your understanding with this ever-changing industry.

A little long but a good summary. Those not in the industry can probably skip the second half though. Everyone else should read the first part at least for some good tips to spot and avoid greenwashing (pro tip: we'll help too if you book with us... 904-410-4116).

Learn what greenwashing means, how to identify it, and what you can do as a traveler or tourism company to avoid it.

Maybe I'm biased (my graduate degree is in this area) but I don't think the lack of people specifically calling out sustainability as a major deciding factor in choosing their travel suppliers is cause to stop talking about it. Rather, I see it as an education problem. It's our responsiblity to travel responsibly to ensure future generations can enjoy the same travel experienes we can and our suppliers should practice sustainable tourism for this reason, but it's our responsibility as travel advisors (who promote responsible tourism) to educate our clients on the whats and the whys so that they can make informed decisions. If it's not talked about openly, it becomes forgotten about. What do you think?

I hate to say this, but I think the travel industry spends too much time talking about sustainability.

ABOUT US

Corey Determan & Leticia Herrera have more than 30 years of combined experience in responsible, immersive travel experiences. In addition to a dozen industry certifications, we completed graduate level studies in ecotourism and business as well as having served as tourism consultants for the Mexican National Park Service and the Florida Park Service. More importantly, we practice what we preach by keeping a keen eye on how our tourism dollars are spent - ensuring our travel is a force for positive change and not negative impacts. Whether your traveling with the extended family, that special someone or just by yourself - we would love to talk to you. Still not convinced... did we mention that we don’t charge a service fee or markup for most of our services?
