12/05/2018

Curling fans planning to Visit Thunder Bay in November to watch curling stars from around the world play in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of CurlingTour Challenge should get their tickets soon.

200 all event passes and 150 weekend passes are still available.

Tickets are being managed by the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling and are only available online https://tourchallenge.goigniter.com.

The Tour Challenge like the Boost National in Conception Bay, Newfoundland could become the second of seven Grand Slam events planned for the 2018-2019 season to sell out.

The Tour Challenge will be held at the Thunder Tournament Centre November 6 – 11. The championship curling event with national broadcast by Sportsnet will feature the top names in the game from around the world

Teams expected to compete include the reigning Olympic champions, John Shuster from Duluth, MN and Anna Hasselborg of Sweden. The recent World champions Jennifer Jones from Winnipeg and Niklas Edin of Sweden will be also here to compete. Newfoundland's Brad Gushue and our own Krista McCarville are among the teams local curling fans in Thunder Bay and across the region of Northwest Ontario will want to come see.

Fans are encouraged to get their tickets for the closing weekend of November 9- 11 as we are over 60% sold out. There are about 200 all event passes still available with around 150 weekend passes that would potentially make for a closing weekend sellout.

“We are encouraging people to buy the ticket packages as the local committee cannot guarantee that there will be single draw tickets available, when they go on sale in September,” said famed local curler Rick Lang who is part of the local organizing committee

“We would not like to see people disappointed that they did not get a chance to see these top names in curling compete.”

“It would be a nice Mother's Day gift,” added Lang noting Mother's Day is this weekend.

Tickets are being managed by the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling and are only available online through their website – www.thegrandslamofcurling.com

The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling, Tour Challenge is hosted as a joint venture of Thunder Bay's three curling clubs – the Fort William Curing Club, the Port Arthur Curling Club and the Kakabeka Falls Curling Club.

The local organizing committee has already filled their requirement of 180 volunteers for hosting the event. Over 200 people have registered so far. This more than meets the need to manage the 250 curlers that will compete along coaches and support staff traveling with the 60 teams along plus 40 broadcast crew from Sportsnet.

Sportsnet will have their broadcast crew in Thunder Bay for 27 hours of live coverage. The tour Challenge will generate national and international exposure for Thunder Bay and the Northwest Ontario region with an estimated economic impact of $1.3 million. https://tourchallenge.goigniter.com/

What are you doing this weekend?

It was awesome to climb in TBay again in perfect spring conditions. Hard to believe I first swung an ice tool here 25 seasons ago! (you think I’d be a lot better at this!).
The longer I climb, the more I am reminded that climbing is really so much more than the actual climbing. Its the partners, the banter, the encouragement, the friendships. It was like going back in time to spend days out with my old crew, some of whom I first tied in with as young men decades ago.
Thanks guys, I’ve missed this! Can’t wait to do it again!
