Found this interesting noodle shop beside Pavillion Bukit Jalil when I was looking for a quiet place to catch up with Ivy.

At one glance I got it was silver thread/rat tail noodles but in fact it’s screw driver noodles, referring to the way it is made.

Those who are sensitive to scents may he overcomes by the smell of preserved bamboo shoots the moment you enter the shop.

But the combination of the bamboo shoots and other toppings for the noodle together with the sauce/broth somehow come together!

Limited beverage menu but compensated w the wide noodles range.

This China-style menu is founded in Malaysia, btw!

Burp!

Linda was excited to bring me for lunch to this newly opened Siam 66 Bar and Bistro as it’s her new favourite as it’s just walking distance from her office.

Every dish ordered was spot on. It’s like being transported back to Thailand.

We heard the kitchen chef and crew are Thai and hence the authenticity of the dishes.

Definitely coming back to try the pork knuckle and check out the live band in the evening.

By the way, they have value-for-money lunch sets if you don’t have enough quorum to order more dishes.

This is my list for best crab omelette and Tom yum soup.

Bangkok is a city that fascinates us endlessly.

We were there during the Xmas weekend and we discovered so much more wonderful things.

For starters, as a country with less than 2% Christians population, they celebrate Christmas like a boss!

We saw colour-blind, hardworking locals who live harmoniously.

Our second pit stop for caffeine was Sarnies to check out their sophisticated roaster machine.

Sarnies, Australian for sandwiches has another outlet which is housed in a 150-year boat house but the one we visited is cafe roastery.

The menu is extensive with hot food and pastries, desserts and cocktails and we particularly loved their hand crafted spreads!

And it’s an experience to watch the roaster machine doing their magic while enjoying our coffee.

Did you know their machine can churn out 8kg of beans every 12 minutes? Amazing!

This trip took on another high - on coffee! Because the coffee scene in Thailand is sophisticated!

And the best way to explore is with two coffee aficionados who had already did their list before coming to Bangkok!

Our first pit stop is PAGA microroastery, owned by husband-and-wife team, Patricia and Gabriel.

Gabriel, a Romanian native, was the champion of the 2017 Romania Brewers Cup and has put his knowledge to great use in creating a line-up of exciting drinks at PAGA.

They have a great range of single origin beans from all over the world, and even from Malaysia’s My Liberica!

The experience here was excellent, from the coffee, the service to the ambience.

Definitely a hit on the list!

When in Thailand, drink Thai milk tea!

We went looking for the popular Thai Milk Tea brand for a morning booster and found an outlet nearby that opens at 8am in the morning.

They have more variety than the one we have in Malaysia and they have merchandise too.

Bangkok is a city where we can visit endless number of times and there’s still a lot to discover. There’s something for everyone, be it young, old, the coffee aficionado, the shopaholic, the go-with-the-flow, the foodie!

It has been 5 years ago since we set foot on Bangkok’s soil.

This trip took us to the ‘highs and lows’ of Thailand’s capital.

Fort Garrison is owned and run by JJ, the former owner of the Kluang Station kopitiam chain. He has a few more f&b establishments under his belt, like Nasi Kukus Warisan and Fino’s Pizza, so you can be guaranteed of a certain standard of deliciousness of the food.

The story behind the name Fort Garrison goes back to the pre-independence time when Garrison was where the British army got their food supply from England and had their Hainanese cooks to make their comfort food to get rid of their homesickness.

We ordered some of their signatures and guess which was our favourite?

Next round, we are going to try Lontong Darat and more!

It was for some quiet time with our lovely Audrey after a delicious lunch but in a restaurant with poor acoustics.

Taynton View is a quiet neighbourhood with a lot of notable f&b restaurants but lately it’s also a birthplace of many quaint and interesting concept cafes.

Yi cafe is located on the upper floor of one of their main roads. The name Yi means art in Chinese because the cafe offers art jamming sessions.

The place exudes peace with natural sunlight coming in from the front windows, saying hello to the plants.

It seems to be a popular cafe with those who work remotely from office/work.

Other than beverages, they offer hot food and desserts.

Love their friendly service too. The next time you are in the vicinity and thirsty for a ‘spiritual’ drink, they have a menu on it too!

The Hakka Lao deems this Hainanese chicken rice place on his Top 3 of his Best Chicken Rice list.

This is the main tenant of Restaurant Yat Yeh Hing, the restaurant right opposite St Ignatius Church on the LDP highway.

It has an option of roast chicken with offerings of side dishes like beansprouts and offals like gizzard, liver, chicken feet and intestines.

Soup comes complimentary.

Their chili and ginger dip with a tinge of tangyness is perfect to go with the chicken too.

They open from morning at 10am and close at 2pm with the rest days on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This cafe was opened in February 2023 and is hidden away from the main thoroughfare of Old Klang Road even though it’s just a lane parallel to it.

While it may get a little busy than usual in the day because there are a lot of offices around, this is one of the places we would go for a quiet and relaxing post dinner coffee. By then, parking would be so easy too.

Oui bakehouse bakes fine pastries on site so you can expect fresh pastries but what we like about this place is their most attentive service, despite how busy they are.

It’s on my best cafes around Old Klang Road list, for sure!

Heard of the place a while ago but never had the chance to check it out till foodie buddies Peter & Evelyn came visiting.

We came 2 weeks earlier but the star soup was all sold out so we made a date to be the first customers and we were!

They operate at side lane of Kedai Kopi Sing Kee, in a light industrial area opposite Pearl Point.

Opens at 10.30am and by 1.00pm most of the popular soups would be sold out.

They serve a small range of comfort food, zap fan style such as pork knuckle vinegar, sweet & sour pork to go with rice.

Service is fast and friendly but seatings at the kopitiam, inside and outside is limited.

Best of all, the prices are pretty decent for a generous portion of ingredients in the soup!

Thank you Peter and Evelyn for the lunch treat! Next round we shall tackle the Lala and other soups k?

If Edwin didn’t bring us, we wouldn’t think we can find authentic Thai food in a food court.

Edwin ordered our lunch in Thai because he had a short study stint in Bangkok and while waiting I was reading the menu board, the steamed fish item is at a flat rate of RM40!

We had the Ka Moo too, my all time favourite.

Definitely a place to bookmark if you want to fix your Thai food craving at a good price, when in PJ.

This Thai stall opens for lunch and dinner by the way.

We were in Putrajaya for our morning walk so we decided to have our breakfast in Dengkil, a small town which shares borders with Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and Sepang.

The name Dengkil originated from the orang asli word ‘Dingkil’ which means durians with big seed but less flesh as there were many durian trees along the Langat River that runs through this small town.

Another version is by the Chinese who came here for the mining and rubber industry in the early 1900s.

The Chinese name for Dengkil is Long Xi (龙溪), or Ling Kay in Hokkien, which means Dragon River. Local Chinese believed that an ascetical dragon was living in the area for a very long time but the British chased it away by setting it on fire. The dragon was badly injured and spew out black blood, which later formed a river and thus the name Dragon River. Another name for the river is Sungai Air Hitam (black water river in English) which still exists until today.

We were introduced to this hidden wanton noodle stall by The Banker whose office is in the nearby city of Cyberjaya.

This stall occupies a corner lot of the town’s Medan Selera.

We love the airy and shaded dining space, next to a pond which has lots of fishes.

The wanton noodles are served with char Siu, wanton and fried pork 👍🏻.

Come early as they will be done by 1pm.

The quest for the best Hainanese chicken rice continues.

The Hakka Lao saw this stall with heaps of chicken hanging at the glass window last week when we came to Tmn Midah, Cheras for Lei Cha so he had to quench his curiosity if this chicken rice meets his standards.

This stall is part of the Tmn Midah’s wai sek kai and its right opposite Caring Pharmacy.

He likes the smoothness and firmness of the poached chicken. And he likes that there’s side orders like beansprouts and meatball soup.

He gives a thumbs up for the ginger & citrus dip too.

The prices are decent too.

I believe he has put this on his Top 10 list quietly when he said he wants to come again to count exactly how many chickens the stall sells a day.

Other than Hainanese chicken rice, The Hakka Lao has a fixation for curry noodles.

And recently he discovered another curry noodle stall that would satisfy his midnight cravings.

This stall that opens from 2pm onwards sells wanton noodles, yong tau foo and Lala soup but its star is the creamy and aromatic curry noodles.

It’s located next to the new Seri Kembangan new village market and parking is easy in the night.

The Hakka Lao went home happy and slept well, knowing he has another place to go after midnight if he’s ever feels peckish (the stall closes at 3am).

Our final pitstop - Sasaran for bread & cake.

Sasaran is a small fishing village between Kuala Selangor and Klang. Its name which means Target is derived from the shooting range set to by the British Police Force before Independence.

While many would connect its name to the famous Sky Mirror attraction, which we have never been to, our reasons to head to Sasaran are the Lala porridge which is opened in the evening and this inconspicuous bakery that sells traditional breads.

Yong Kee is located opposite the Sasaran Art Park but there’s a chance you may missed it because the sign board has almost faded to illegibility.

They have the usual buns, roti kok but our favourite are their Roti Bengali/Hainan and butter cakes.

Their Roti Bengali which is baked daily is soft and fragrant and you opt to have them sliced and spread with Kaya and/or margarine.

We usually would order quite a number of loaves because the aroma that permeates in the car is irresistible to keep the bread untouched till we get home!

Sekinchan translated in Chinese means ‘suitable for planting’ (适耕庄).

And we chanced upon another crop other than paddy and mangoes which is perfect for a pitstop on a scorching hot day!

With tables and chairs under the shade of the coconut trees and large parasols, while sipping sweet coconut water, this is a definitely a refreshing respite!

They serve hot food and desserts as well with some activities for the younger ones in the compound.

They also have tents, prolly for those who are interested to spend a little longer in the plantation?

Just a note, to park properly so not to block any car or let any other cars double park and waste your time trying to get the errant driver to remove their car!

Pitstop 3: Seafood lunch at Bagan Tengkorak.

This small fishing village is just off Tanjung Karang. It’s a turn-in for 4km, passing a Malay village before arriving to a Chinese temple.

Park at the space opposite the temple and walk in the lane next to the temple and you will arrive at the wooden restaurant within 100m.

The seafood is fresh and delicious but don’t expect 5-star service.

It’s only because there’s only one cook and one order-taker who incidentally are the husband-and-wife owners.

It may help if you speak Hokkien/Mandarin but nonetheless be prepared to wait.

Despite the non-world class service, i don’t mind coming back again because the prices are really good for the fresh and delicious seafood.

A special shout out to Sam for recommending this and Jenny for showing me the way in, during our trip to Sekinchan earlier.

And oh, just remember this restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday, opens from 11am to 4pm.

Pitstop #2 at Pasir Penambang

This is our favourite cafe whenever we are in Pasir Penambang.

It’s named after the highway that passes right outside the village - Route 5.

Other than good service and great coffee, they also have their own tea selections and recently cocoa beans.

We love their principle in helping out the cottage industry in the village by promoting their products at the shelves they put up at the wall of their cafe.

This is a place where we chill before we move on to our next destination, refreshed.

But mind you, they are opened from Thursday through Monday so don’t be disappointed if you see the shutters down if you swing by on Tue or Wed.

This is on my list on favourite cafes out of KL.

A new stretch of West Coast Expressway which is closer to KL, has opened so The Hakka Lao has decided to check it out.

We entered the WCE from Bukit Raja, Klang and exited at Bukit Rotan (the new stretch ended there).

We joined back to Route 5, the coastal trunk road towards Sekinchan.

It seems more cost and time effective if we want to head to Ijok or Kuala Selangor than the other tollway from where we come from.

Our first stop was Pasir Penambang for breakfast and found some interesting local eats in this small Chinese fishing village of Kuala Selangor.

We recently found a cafe hidden from the main thoroughfare, which is great for tete-a-tete and quiet time.

Lisette can be accessed either through the back door of The Social or the exterior escalator from Lower Ground entrance.

Lisette which signature is a ‘grammable flower wall also serves great pastries and delicious brunch.

The Hakka Lao has an undying love for Hainanese chicken rice. And high standards for this dish too as he would try the famous chicken rice at the places he visits.

So far no chicken rice has won a place in his stomach other than this chicken rice shop in Seri Kembangan.

This family-run business operates in a Dewan Orang Ramai off Jalan Besar, with a bus stop right in front.

The locals nicknamed it Bus Stop Chicken rice.

Nothing’s fancy about this place and their menu is just chicken rice with an option gizzard and liver.

No optional order of vegetables or complimentary chicken broth - zilch!

But each item on their super limited menu is a star, especially the chilli sauce.

The Hakka Lao doesn’t consume the chili sauce by the sauce plate but the soup bowl size.

Now go tell me if he’s on point or not!

While everyone else joins the long queue at the front of the restaurants in KL’s latest mall, TRX, we decided to skip the waiting and enjoy our dinner nearby while admiring the beautiful skyscraper from a short distance.

Fatt Kee is a noodle stall that operates in the evenings, using the dining space of Win Heng Seng kopitiam which only operates in the day.

It has been around for decades, popular with night owls as it closes late.

Service was fast and there was a good helping of G Yau Char and prawns.

And there’s only a short wait for food!

I always bring my guests to this neighbourhood cafe whenever they are in the vicinity.

Housed in a link house on Jalan Sepadu, the thoroughfare between Jalan Klang Lama and Jalan Gembira, you are always greeted by the welcoming team at the window right before the main steel door.

The good vibes start right there!

With the impeccable service, coupled with scrumptious food and not to forget the excellent coffee, you will understand why it remains my favourite neighbourhood cafe all this time!
