🐾 LABOUR MANIFESTO RESPONSE

Those of you who follow our page (numbering into the thousands now) are often treated to behind-the-scenes photos of our beautiful beagles. These photos are usually taken by our fantastic team, many of whom are in their 20's & 30's and supported brilliantly by our knowledgeable elders. Our ranks are filled with people from all walks of life: farmers, office-workers, doctors, vets, engineers, carpenters, chimney sweeps, solicitors, sales-people, night-shift workers, teachers, secretaries... You name it, we've probably got one!

What brings us all together week-in-week-out?
Our hounds.

They're born in our houses, they're looked after by families as puppies, they live their best lives imaginable during their working years and then they retire to our sofas when it's time.

They are loved. They are cherished. They are celebrated.

We give up any sense of a 'normal' life to spend time with them and also ensure their welfare is paramount. We work closely with our vets to ensure no hound is left wanting - and we have the bills to prove it.

It really is a dream job to spend time with any breed of hounds, being part of their enigmatic little world, whilst benefitting from the effects they have on your mental and physical health.

But sadly, earlier today the Labour Party pledged in their election manifesto that they would be ending trail hunting with hounds.

With no sport to keep hounds entertained and working, as well as no income to fund their upkeep, Sir Keir Starmer has served a death sentence on an estimated 15,000+ hounds around the country, assuming he wins this election.

We at the Warwickshire Beagles have always taken great pride in matching our retiring hounds with suitable homes and they have been loved until their final days. But how would we find appropriate homes for our circa. 50 beagles all at once, when their kennels (which we do not own) might be closed almost immediately after new legislation is passed? We, like hundreds of other packs around the country, will be left with the most heartbreaking of decisions. Not to mention the hunt staff, who will somehow have to find a way to live with what we were forced to do.

It is clear that many in Westminster have no idea what they're doing when it comes to rural policies. We have spent the last 20 years following the letter of the law and so, is this really about protecting wildlife? If we weren't hunting legally, it's safe to assume that the police might have caught us out one of the 1,000+ times our pack has gone out to work our hounds in public since the law was changed. However, you will find our records are clear.

Those of you who choose to vote for any party whose idea of an 'animal welfare' policy is slaughtering tens of thousands of healthy dogs, will you come and support us when the time comes to close our kennels? Will you help us comfort the beagles as they are humanely put to sleep, all because the politicians wanted to win some misinformed activist votes? Whether you do that or not, it will still happen.

Saying that, we're proud to live within one of the greatest democracies in the world, so we're not here to tell anyone who they should and shouldn't vote for (besides, there are lots of other important issues facing our country today). But do spare our beagles a thought as you mark your form on 4th July and importantly, if Labour come out on top, then please for goodness sake let your voice be heard before they pass any new and unnecessary legislation.

A great start to having your voice heard is using the Countryside Alliance's online lobbying tool, where you can quickly and easily reach out to your local candidates across ALL the main parties, which is so very important:
https://www.countryside-alliance.org/general-election-e-lobby

No doubt this has not been a pleasant read for some, but we will not apologise for it. We will fight with every breath in our bodies to prevent this injustice against our wonderful beagles and the future they deserve.

Sincerely, the Warwickshire Beagles.
