Block Party Concerts is made up of the same group that introduced SE MN to the likes of Trampled by Turtles, OK Go, The Hold Steady, and Cloud Cult. The Real Music Series debuts this fall with two concerts at the Rochester Civic Theatre and two at the Rochester Art Center, promising to bring in some of the most popular, sought after artists in the region and the nation. Audiences will be treated t
o world class performances in the comfort, intimacy and beauty of two of Rochester's most inviting venues. The inaugural season of the Real Music Series presents the following acts:
Jeremy Messersmith on October 2 at the Rochester Art Center – One of Minnesota's most beloved singer-songwriters, Jeremy's last album, Reluctant Graveyard, was named a top 10 album by NPR. That year he also won the Star-Tribune critics poll for best local artist. Jeremy recently signed with Glassnote Records (the same label as Mumford and Sons) and is putting finishing touches on a new, soon-to-be-released album. Dessa on October 10 at the Rochester Civic Theatre – “Dessa has emerged as one of the most diverse and talented artists in indie rap.” “A one-woman powerhouse...with a literary sensibility and an aversion to genre clichés.” These are just a few ways critics describe one of the most influential voices in the the emerging Twin Cities Hip Hop scene. A member of the indie hip hop collective known as Doomtree, Dessa released her latest album “Part of Speech” this past summer to rave reviews. She is currently on a national tour and Rochester is extremely fortunate to be included as one of her stops. (www.doomtree.net/dessa, www.facebook.com/dessadarling)
Cloud Cult on December 5 at the Art Center – One of the most distinctive, creative and well respected bands in the state and beyond, Cloud Cult must be experienced in-person to fully appreciate their immeasurable gifts. Combining classical string with traditional rock instruments, and live on-stage painting, this band continues to push the artistic limits of what a concert performance can be. Arguably the most popular band ever to perform at the St. John’s Block Party in its 10-year run, Cloud Cult is back for a rare performance in a city that has adopted them as an all-time favorite. Named on numerous “best-of” lists over the years, with 11 studio albums to their credit, several commercials, and the subject of a full-length documentary about the band (“No One Said It Would Be Easy”), this promises to be one of the most anticipated concerts to hit Rochester in some time. The New Standards on December 11 at the Rochester Civic Theatre – A holiday concert that sells out in minutes in the Twin Cities, the New Standards brings their wildly popular show to Rochester for the first time. A Minnesota Super-group of sorts, the band includes members from Semisonic, Trip Shakespeare and The Suburbs. John Munson, Chan Poling and Steve Roehm will perform a full holiday concert you won't forget. They have a lot of friends in the industry so you never know who will show up to perform with them.
