Byodoin was built about 1,000 years ago as a retreat villa by Fujiwara no Michinaga. Later his son, Yorimichi turned Byodoin into a temple. Its most beautiful building is a phoenix hall that has never been destroyed since its construction in the year 1053 making it one of the oldest wooden structures in Japan.
