That’s a wrap on our AmaWaterways river cruise tour through Egypt! It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I feel so very happy and satisfied with the experience we had. This trip was so extremely well-organized and we just kept saying this over and over. So many logistics to coordinate and our amazing cruise manager Mohamed and Egyptologist Ahmed who were with us the entire 12 days, made it all run so smoothly. Our River cruise group consisted of 58 people and we were split in half for buses and tour guides, each group having our own Egyptologist (I don’t think it’s possible, but the other guests said their Egyptologist was just as amazing- of course we are biased towards our own habibi 🙂). We saw and did so much! If Egypt is on your bucket list, let me know…I’d love to help you check it off! ✅

Part of tonight’s entertainment back on board our riverboat, a whirling dervish! He was spinning for more than 20 min- no idea how he could maintain that without passing out! 😝 In Egypt, whirling dervishes are known as “tanoura” dancers, a vibrant and colorful Sufi tradition rooted in the mystical branch of Islam, often performed as a form of prayer and spiritual practice. The spinning motion is symbolic of the journey of the soul towards God, and the dancers’ movements represent the connection between the earthly and the divine.

Luxor Temple and Avenue of the Sphinxes

The Temple of Luxor, constructed over hundreds of years by Amenhotep III, Ramses Il, Tutankhamun and other pharaohs. The temple lay hidden until the 19th century, and the effort to restore it still continues.

The Avenue of Sphinxes, also known as “Rams Road” or “El-Kebbash Road,” is a 1.7-mile route in Luxor, connecting Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple, and was used for religious ceremonies like the Opet Festival where statues of the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu were paraded from Karnak to Luxor. The avenue is lined with over 1,050 sphinx statues, some with ram heads representing the god Amun and others with human faces. It was buried for centuries under sand but discovered in 1940s. Thirty percent of the restoration and installation of the heads is completed so far.

Visiting the Papyrus Institute for a fun and educational experience. 📜We learned the process for making papyrus using the pith from the Cyperus papyrus plant. The pith is cut into thin strips, soaked , and laid in overlapping layers, then pressed together to create a sheet of paper. AmaWaterways gifted us each a scrolled papyrus with our different painted images and our name handwritten in hieroglyphics inside a cartouche. We each painted in our name symbols with gold paint to take home. What a cool and unique gift!

After our cruise from Aswan to Luxor, we visited the largest religious complex in Egypt and second largest in the world (next to Angkor Wat) , the Temple of Karnak, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built over the course of 1,300 years, it is simply overwhelming. The Hypostyle Hall is a great architectural marvel with its roof blocks, supported by a colossal 136 columns. It is still the largest room of any religious building in the world.

Visiting Kom Ombo and the Crocodile Museum with its crocodile mummies!!! 🐊🐊🐊

Kom Ombo dates to the Ptolemaic Period, although its foundations might be more ancient. The temple is unusual as it is divided into two parts. The southern side was dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, who was worshiped here with the goddess Hathor as his consort, and the god Khonsu as their child. Sobek was viewed as a creator god, master of the universe, and was connected with other gods, many of whom played a key role in creation.

On the northern side of the temple, the cult of Horus the Elder and his family (wife Tasenetnefret and son Banebtawy) was celebrated. In some myths, Horus is called the brother of Sobek.

The god Sobek is depicted either as a crocodile, or as a crocodile-headed man wearing a headdress of ram-horns topped by a sun disk and two tall plumes. Crocodiles were both revered and feared as they had both benevolent and violent sides, and were extremely powerful creatures. The ancient Egyptians prayed to Sobek for protection, strength, and fertility, and also viewed him as a creator god.

Originally Sobek only protected his worshippers from crocodiles. Later he became known as the “Lord of the Waters,” as the Egyptians believed that he had created the Nile from his sweat.

Crocodiles were physically associated with the sun as they climb out of the water where they spend the night to bask on a sandbank throughout the day, only to return to the dark depths once again at dusk, mirroring the passage of the sun through the day and its disappearance during the night.

After seeing and trying to absorb so much history for the past several days , Egyptian Night Party was the perfect answer to letting loose! So much laughter and fun! I’ve never before seen where EVERY person was up dancing! 100% participation including the crew, Hotel manager, cruise manager and both our Egyptologists! Dancing and games including wrap the mummy contest (we did NOT win! 😖)

Taking a felucca ride, a traditional Egyptian sailboat, back to our riverboat ⛵️I loved this so much! Watching our boat captain single- handedly maneuver and weave this large sailboat through so many other feluccas, motorboats and large riverboats with such grace, fluidity and skill, had me completely captivated. It was like watching a trained ballet dancer!

Visiting Hessa, a colorful Nubian Village 💙💛💚

Nubian culture in Egypt, rooted in the region of Nubia (modern-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan), is characterized by a rich history of trade, agriculture, and distinct cultural practices, including music, art, and architecture, with a strong connection to the Nile River. Nubian villages are known for their distinctive architecture, characterized by the use of mud-brick and brightly colored paint, often located along the banks of the Nile.
