Chanterelles! It’s been so dry this summer that wild mushrooms are few & far between in my area. I did get a nice 6 litre picking of chanterelles in a mossy lowland area that had a big blow down a number of years ago - tough to walk around down there, but every year chanterelles grow in abundance :-)

Lobsters! I’m lucky enough to have a couple spots on my land that host beautiful lobster mushrooms, where they grow under eastern hemlock trees :-) It is actually a mushroom parasite that lives on (and takes over!) a large white funnel mushroom :-) (more info with each pic)

Thank you for the enquiries about workshops, but sorry to say, that due to tendon injuries brought on by a hormone imbalance, I can barely walk & have no outings planned for this year - hoping I can heal & maybe be able to do more next year :-) Happy foraging everyone :-) I'll post when I can, but will have very few posts this summer. In the meantime, you can use my photo collection to learn about mushrooms I've featured in the past few years - clicking on any photo will take you to the posts I made about a certain mushroom - still lots you can learn with a little online wander through my pics & posts :-)

All the lovely rains have brought out the spring oysters! Spring oysters seem to grow exclusively on large dead poplars in our area - both standing & on fallen logs. They are often very white, though can also be slightly tan coloured. Their gills run all the way down the stem & clusters of mushroom shelves are joined where they attach to wood. They smell very fragrant, like sweet almond & are delicious! Both spring & summer oysters attract little black beetles between their gills - a sharp rap on the cap will cause them to rain out :-) Spring oysters are much more fragile than the very solid fall oysters, and don’t keep long, due to their high water content - too much rain can turn them into a collapsed sopping mess! By day 2 in the fridge, they will collapse, so your best bet is to cook or dry them right away, so they last longer :-) Happy foraging everyone! (more info with each pic)

Look what I spotted this morning! Golden (aurivella) pholiotas covering a dying birch! :-) Yes they are “more” edible, than their cousins the shaggy (squarosa) pholiotas which require caution! (more info with each pic)

Fall oysters are out! Yay! Much denser than the spring & summer oysters, fall oysters have yellowish gills, that terminate at the bump that passes for a stem on these shelfing mushrooms. They are one of my very favourites to dry in the fall - they reconstitute very well, are a satisfying chew & have great flavour - wonderful for hearty winter soups & stews :-) (more info with each pic)

Whoo hoo!! Lots of chanterelles in my lowlands! And most are looking more like normal funnel-shaped chanterelles now, instead of the split flower shapes from excess rain :-) (more info with each pic)

My woodland property has such a variety of habitats, that I can strike off in any direction & find a different mushroom spot :-) From east to west, these were my finds the last week or so. I’m itching to go further afield in my mushroom wanders, but need to pace myself Not easy for an addicted wild mushroom hunter!! I’m dying to check out the uplands & mountaintops! LOL! So happy to finally be seeing mushrooms coming up - especially close by! (more info with each pic)

Hi there mushroom lovers! Despite all the rain we've had in the past month, it still hasn't brought on lots of wild mushrooms! They are few & far between in my area. I've found very few boletes & very few chanterelles so far. Very strange! I can only attribute it to the spring droughts we've suffered the last 2 years - the forest floor has been missing spring plants & I would guess, that has reduced the food supply for summer mushrooms. Just to let everyone know, I don't have any workshops or forages (public or private) planned for this year - we'll wait & see what next year brings! I am basically a hermit to start with, & the past year & a half has made me even more so! I also had computer problems, but that has improved. Add to that, I've had ligament injuries that have made it hard to walk much, though I am healing & hope to be back to 5 hr hikes again by fall :-) Good luck mushroom hunting, guys! There must be some somewhere! LOL! I expect that any day now, we'll suddenly be inundated with wild mushrooms! I can dream! :-)
