Sleepless nights have arrived!
The period of time when night ceases to exist and daylight takes over has arrived. This period, known as White Nights, is from June 11 - July 2.
If you find yourself coming to St. Pete during this time, be sure to pack an eye mask 😉

Traffic in St. Pete
Now that winter is gone, other forms of transport begin to emerge such as horse-drawn carriages.
🐴The first carriages were imported to Russia from Europe in the 17th century.
🐴Russians learned how to make carriages and in the new capital, carriage makers could be found on Karetnaya Ulitsa (Carriage St.) which is now known as 1-я Советская Улица (1st Soviet St.).
🐴The number of horses pulling the carriage depended on ones status - the higher the rank, the bigger the team. Royal carriages were pulled by a team of 8. This doesn’t include travel carriages - that’s another story.
🐴The wealthy rode in closed carriages. According to carriage etiquette, gentlemen should be the last in and the first out in order to assist the ladies.
🐴Inside the carriage there was a seating order. The best seat was the one facing the horses. Typically, ladies sat here and gentlemen sat with their backs towards the horses. The place of honor, reserved for the elderly, guest of honor, or lady was on the right side of the seat facing the horses.
🐴Some carriages contained a special communication system so that passengers could inform the drivers to move or stop. Passengers pulled on a rope inside the carriage that was wrapped around the drivers hand when they were ready to go or when they needed to stop.
Learn more about carriages in St. Petersburg at the Court Carriage Exhibition in Tsarskoe Selo (near Catherine’s Palace) or at the Hermitage Storage Center in Staraya Derevnya.
