Dear friends,
It’s with great sadness that we are moving away from Russia. When we left St. Pete a few months ago, we were hoping that we could return but it soon became obvious that returning wasn’t an option for us. Even though we are relocating to the States, my heart is still captured by beautiful St. Petersburg and we will certainly be back to visit whenever possible.

So what will happen to this account?
📝 It will continue! Although posting will not be as often as before.
📚 The book club still meets monthly and is free to anyone who wants to learn more about Russia through reading. We meet at the end of the month to discuss what we read.
🗞 The Russo Files insider guide with St. Pete updates will be issued on a quarterly basis.
🗺 All in-person tours have come to a halt. However, the tours and experiences I crafted will be remade into digital format.

There’s still a lot to figure out but I have enjoyed sharing my St. Pete love with you all over the years. Thank you for being a part of my journey 💕

In honor of the upcoming Women’s Day, SAFS Book of the Month is Kremlin Wives by Larissa Vasilieva.

Join us for a discussion on what’s sure to be a fascinating read written by one of Russia’s most memorable feminists. If you’re interested in joining the Zoom discussion on Thursday, March 31st, send a message and I’ll add you to the chat.

“For over 70 yrs the Kremlin was a bastion of all-powerful Soviet rulers…A great deal is known about the men who held the fates of millions in their iron grip, yet little is known about the women who shared their lives. Shrouded in secrecy, the wives and mistresses of the Soviet power elite lived out their lives in wildly different ways: took part in the Revolution and it’s aftermath, bore children, suffered abuse; they were arrested and sent to Siberia, driven to su***de and even murdered.”

The Kremlin Wives can be found on Amazon and Kindle.

The great thing about the Challengers is that you can save them and do them at any time!

These are just recommendations of when these things might be best experienced and seasonally appropriate.

Most of this month I have been sick, traveling and recovering from all of that so I am a bit behind. Without further ado, here are my top recommendations for what to do in St. Petersburg in February. The month isn’t over yet!

Full lists and links can be found in the next issue of The Russo Files. I will be combining the February and March issue into one this time and both challenger recommendations will be listed there.

Save this post and find the challenger in stories or highlights to check off as you go along.

6 Things to Experience in St. Pete this month

1. Visit the Aurora Cruiser
On November 7, 1917 (October 25 OS) a blank was fired from the cruiser signaling the storming of the Winter Palace and marking the beginning of the October Revolution.

5. Try Sbiten - the Russian Honey Drink
The perfect mix for cooler temps and the holiday season. Find it at Vkusville or Teremok.

101 cannon shots rang out from the Peter and Paul Fortress for the birth of a daughter and 301 for a son.

🔸During the reign of the last Romanov, there was a great disappointment that settled over the city as time and again the 102 cannon fire didn’t come. Finally, the heir was born and the whole city celebrated. Helen Rappaport’s Four Sisters (also known as The Romanov Sisters) offers in-depth insight into the secluded lives of the overshadowed daughters of the last Tsar.

🔸We recommend reading this biographical work as a follow up after having learned more about the general lives of Nicholas II and family. For fans of the last Romanov, this is a great book to read before visiting their former residence - the newly opened Alexander Palace.

QR Codes and Lockdown

ℹ️From now until November 7th St. Petersburg has entered a partial lockdown. Shopping is limited to only essential goods and cafes and restaurants have entered into a takeaway or delivery regime. Theaters and museums are still open but with QR codes or proof of accepted vaccines such as Sputnik V and Sputnik Light.

💉Foreigners without the recognized vaccine in Russia (Sputnik V or Sputnik Light) will not be permitted to enter the aforementioned establishments during this time. PCR tests are not accepted.

💉Those who have the Russian-recognized vaccine will be required to show proof of vaccination via either QR code or certificate of vaccination.

💉Foreigners are currently allowed only Sputnik Light vaccination. We recommend consulting any of the international medical clinics in the city should you want to get the vaccine.

ℹ️From November 1 - 3 St. Petersburg employees are required to work from home where applicable.

⚠️New mask rules have been announced: folks wearing masks that fall below the nose may receive a fine of 4000₽ and 5000₽ for repeat offenders.

Empress Elizabeth became a crazy cat lady on this day centuries ago.

🐈 The first Hermitage feline squad was comprised of 30 of the finest mouse-catching felines from Kazan, which was well-known as home to a special group of dutiful guard cats. As rodents ran wild in the palace, the Empress issued a decree to round up the finest feline squad to protect the palace from the destructive little beasts and here they came!

🐈‍⬛ Catherine the Great presented the squad with an official title as ‘Hermitage guards’. They were divided into outdoor and indoor defenders. Only the most courteous cats were permitted to the indoor squadron, but one claw out of line and they would be demoted to courtyard rank.

🐈 Nowadays, the Hermitage is said to house ~50 cats. The cats are solely supported by donations but they have their patrons. Just last year, a frenchman divided his fortune between his family members and his favorite organizations; including the Hermitage cats.

🐈‍⬛ They live well and have their own royal quarters, chef and vet. Elderly cats are retired and given away to loving homes. Each year in May, the Hermitage guards open their doors to the public on the Day of the Hermitage Cats and it’s possible to see how the modern troop lives.

In honor of the special day, painted the well-known series of Hermitage cats dressed up in imperial court servant dress. Pictured is The Hermitage Court Waiter Cat.

With a title like that, I admit that I was skeptical that there would be even a shred of accuracy in this book, but I was wrong!

The Secret Lives of the Tsars is definitely worth a read for anyone looking to learn the most fun bits of Romanov history: dwarf weddings, ice palaces, secret rendezvous and murders.

🔺It’s important to note that, as in many books, Rasputin is inaccurately portrayed here as well. The stereotype that Rasputin was a dirty peasant was most likely a reflection of high society’s prejudice. It’s well-known that he frequented the bathhouses of St. Petersburg. Those who knew him best remarked that he was clean and well-kept.

Dark Days Survival 101

The dark days are upon us. Just 62 days of sunshine in St. Pete - how is one to manage?!

🟧At first, so few days of sunshine was hard for this Mississippian to wrap her head around, but now I hardly take note of how many or how few days of sunshine we get.

🟦It’s natural to react to colors - a clear blue sky and bright green grass often makes us feel happier and more peaceful. Yet, in the absence of natural colors we can add color to our surroundings which acts as mood boosters often without us even realizing it.

🟨Not everyone is ready to paint their kitchen a sunshine-y yellow color like I did (See our Live Chats on IGTV). However, by having bright outerwear and surrounding ourselves with colorful possessions in our book bags/purses and at home, we can tap into positive emotions and focus on something other than the grey season outside.

🟪Recently, I found a local company that completely gets how important a spot of color can be in St. Pete and has made the perfect outwear for those grey, rainy and windy St. Pete days! has a colorful line of parkas, coats, rain jackets and accessories for both men and women. Order online or drop by their showroom to find your mood-boosting outerwear and cold weather accessories.

Charming former trade city weekend getaway

The quaint little city of Torzhok was once a major trade city as well as being part of the ‘Sovereign’s Road’ connecting St. Pete to Moscow. It was an important hub for travelers, vendors, coachmen and postal workers.

🔍 Catherine the Great’s travel palace can still be spotted through the fence although it needs repair and isn’t open to public. Other frequent travelers to the area include literary giants like Pushkin, Gogol and Turgenev. You can learn more about this at the Pushkin Museum (Muzey A. S. Pushkina).

🔍 Pushkin’s advice on visiting Torzhok, “When you can, dine at Pozharsky’s in Torzhok and eat the fried cutlets.” He’s referring to the pozharsky cutlets which many believe were the creation of Daria Pozharskaya. She was the daughter of a coachman who opened a tavern where Pushkin and the others stayed when in town. The popular cutlets quickly became known as pozharsky cutlets. Nowadays, you can still have a pozharsky cutlet in the former tavern as well as in many other restaurants around the city. The tavern location can be found on IG as гостиница пожарских.

🔍Since the ~13th century, Torzhok has been famous for its golden embroidery which was commissioned by the tsars and church officials. Awards were won at world exhibitions in London and Paris and today you can visit the Museum of Gold Embroidery

🔍As the Russian railway began to take shape, Torzhok was left off the route thereby losing its significance as a major trade city.

🔍Across the picturesque Tvertsa River, there are a number of beautiful Orthodox cathedrals along with the Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum (). The museum has an impressive collection of artifacts from the area such as an unusual collection of postcards from Imperial Russia along with Easter eggs from the 12th century, and a whopping 19 birch bark letters found by archaeologists in the area which date back to ancient Rus.

‼️Be sure to stop by .angelov for coffee and their fabulous desserts!

🚘Getting to Torzhok is an easy 5 hr car ride from St. Pete or a 7 hr train.

A perfect dacha read

“Michael scrapes a knife against the wall and a strip of yellowing floral wallpaper curls on the metal edge, peeling away from the plaster. Cradling it in his palms, glue side up, he returns to the kitchen.”

📘The story unfolds in 1941 during the Siege of Leningrad and the most difficult winter Peterburgers ever experienced. Food was scarce and citizens began to eat anything possible, including the glue from the wallpaper. Throughout the story, readers are gently guided through the struggles of a family of artists as they face life during the siege and its aftermath.
📘SAFS Book Club read #2 was a quick and enjoyable read. Some even read it all in 1-2 days 😱 There were several things we really liked about this book. First of all, it was clear the author did a good bit of research on the topic and painted an accurate image of the times. We loved the references to local locations and modern references such as the International Women’s Club and the cultural insight such as the dacha and how important that is to Russian heritage. We agreed that few can gracefully take on this challenging topic and so delicately guide readers through such a tough period of St. Petersburg history, but Molly brilliantly leads and educates us through this era with a beautiful and enthralling story of family, survival and life in Russia.

📘What makes the story all the more compelling is the real history behind the book of a young girl who survived the siege and grew into an artist who eventually painted a portrait bought by in Moscow which sparked the story.

Don't go to Peterhof to see the palace. That's not what Peterhof is about.

⛲The most important part of the complex is the fountains. Peter the Great specifically chose the location for his version of a Russian Versailles which better supported the flow of water through an intricate system of pipes.

⛲Peter and his engineers managed to surpass the splendor of the Versailles park with fountains that flowed consistently with a more full flow. Of the 180 fountains at Peterhof, there is a large variety in fountain type including some trick fountains that demonstrate Peter's quirky sense of humor.

⛲He loved nothing more than to hide and watch as tired park visitors approached before he launched jets of water that burst out from hidden pipes. Ladies and gentlemen with powdered wigs tried to escape the water to no avail while Peter meanwhile had a big laugh at their expense. This didn't last long though as fancy ladies and gentlemen of the court weren't a fan of this type of 'entertainment'.

⛲On this day in 1723, invited guests arrived at Peterhof for the grand opening. Peter himself turned the taps releasing the water and an almost 300-year-old tradition.

"The glory of Peterhof is in the use of the water." -Robert Massie in Peter the Great.

DM us for a tour of the Peterhof park and Peter's fun fountains!

“There are two sisters; one gives birth to the other, who in turn gives birth to the first. Who are they?”

The sphinx was one of the most terrifying mythical creatures travelers encountered and had to answer to before they could pass.

This is just one of the tricky riddles the Sphinx asked passersby. She would devour or strangle anyone who didn’t answer correctly.

Don’t worry! We won’t devour or strangle you, but next time you’re passing the Egyptian Bridge in St. Pete you’ll be prepared for one of the questions she might ask.

The answer:

This one had me on the edge of my seat.

Can you imagine being in St. Petersburg in the midst of a revolution? Would you stay or would you be on the first plane out?

📕Caught In The Revolution by Helen Rappaport presents the happenings of the Russian Revolution as never told before, through the eyes of foreigners.

📕Tag along with them as they watch the city become a war zone while trying to go on with their daily routines and how they fared throughout one of the most historic events of the 1900s.

This well-researched book is a must-read for anyone wanting to learn more about the Russian Revolution.

📚Caught in the Revolution was a great first pick for the SAFS Book Club. Our read for the month of August is The Girl From the Hermitage by Molly Gartland. Wanna join us? Send us a DM!
