Great LGBTQ history tour today with Tonie Walsh.
Going out on a cold day is always a challenge but it was absolutely worth it! This was part of the Dublin Human Rights Festival but I hope it will take place again in the future.
On this picture Tonie is just in front of Project art centre where his show will run till the end of next week 😀

While on my holidays I saw this absolute gem of women's history. This is Hristina Hranova. The first known female life guard. She was a lifeguard for 17 years in Varna Bulgaria and saved the lives of 54 people. She was also a midlife and delivered over 3000 babies! What a lady! As if that was not enough she swam from one end of the Varna bay to the other and established a 5km swimming competition that is still held every year.

I deliberately left the Magdalene Laundries out of the tour. It is a story I didn't feel I could do justice in a short walking tour. I am struggling to believe such a thing existed so recently.
This 45 min documentary is a good opportunity to hear the stories of the women who spent time in the laundries.
North Inner City Folklore Project

Personal accounts from women who spent their adult lives in the convent of Our Lady of Refuge, the Gloucester Street Magdalene Laundry. This 45 min documentary was broadcast on RTÉ Radio in 1990

A fascinating story of a French opera singer who enjoys fencing and gets in trouble with the law quite a bit :)
Talking of breaking societal norms!

Julie d'Aubigny (1670/1673–1707), better known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin, was a 17th-century swordswoman and opera singer. Her tumultuous career and flamboyant life were the subject of gossip and colourful stories in her own time, and inspired numerous portrayals afterwards. Théophile G...

"The woman on the wheel is altogether a novelty, and is essentially a product of the last decade of the century, she is riding to greater freedom, to a nearer equality with man, to the habit of taking care of herself, and to new views on the subject of clothes philosophy." The Columbian newspaper, 1895

Good for the environment and instrumental in women's liberation! Aren't bikes just great? 🚴‍♀️💨

The technology craze of the 1890s meant fashion freedom and transportation independence.

Love this quote! This is very much why I started 'Following Her Path' :)
"In my understanding, the women's movement is first and foremost about memory. It is about remembering the women who lived, who struggled, worked and loved before us, including the ones we have never heard about." Elif Shafak, Fifty Shades of Feminism (and quoted in 'I Call Myself a Feminist')

The tour is cancelled today for the weather ☔️ If you still fancy learning about women in history (indoors!), Charlot Kristensen Illustration will be selling her Black Women In History zine at DCAF in Generator Hostel Smithfield today. We had the pleasure to meet Charlot and hear her talk about race and representation at the Body Battleground exhibition in A4 studios.
For those on the South side the National Print Museum will have a curator's talk at 14:30 of their temporary exhibition 'Print Protest and the Polls' commemorating the Irish suffragette movement.
