Working on a couple of Namibia safaris for 2022 and reminiscing about this incredible flight down the Skeleton Coast a few years ago. Named for the plethora of shipwrecks, this southwestern coastline of Namibia has such strong currents that the Bushmen called it the “land that god made in anger”. This ship, the Eduard Bohlen, carried cargo and passengers and wrecked on 5 September, 1909. It is now found 400 metres/1300 feet from the shoreline. The upwelling from the freezing Benguela current causes thick fog, difficult wind and constant waves. Huge Fur seal colonies live along the coast - occasionally hunted by desert lions! Animals and birds live inland along the seasonal rivers and oases - many with fascinating thermoregation abilities to stay cool enough to survive the desert heat. If there is a place in Africa that speaks to my hashtag , Namibia is it!

Happy New Year from Northern Kenya. I should have been on safari with a lovely family of 12. 3 generations celebrating together. That is now next year. This year, after 10 years of hosting safaris over Christmas and New Years - which I love for the soulful time clients have immersed in the African wilderness, away from the material, the media, the quotidian - we are on safari with our family and friends. These 20-somethings grew up together in Kenya and now live all over the world. It’s inspiring and fun to hear them all chattering about life, hopes, and goals. Happy 2021 everyone!

Come along for a low buzz of Elsa’s rock at the old Born Free camp - where Christian the lion also rehabilitated into the wild by the very man on my right! James films the back of the seat when I pull up = ! Happy weekend!

Tin Trunk mentioned in Bloomberg! (link in Bio.) Having just finished a three-week safari with wonderful guests from the U.S., I am encouraged by their adventurous spirits and more committed than ever to a form of safari travel in the future that slows down, gets out of the car, interacts with the local people and enhances the lives of all involved!

When we say on safari, well, here is one example. The camels carry the camp, there are no roads, the wonderful Samburu lead the way. It’s intrepid, it’s exercise; it’s culture. We watched honey gatherers climb the cliffs at night to smoke out the bees from this river camp. To think this is going on out in the middle of nowhere while the world turns (or at least tries to!)... it’s that instant perspective that Africa awards all.

My pop-up office for the week. Kenya’s coast is showing off. Had the best dive today I think I have ever had here - including VERY cool sighting of my new favourite animal: the octopus. She came out of her den to look at me (as I tried to maintain neutral buoyancy!) three times. Having recently watched the beautiful documentary , I felt fairly blessed by that!

A lion cub in the golden light - mom and aunt watching out, providing, letting him explore afield and then rush back to climb all over them while they nap....not a bad childhood!

Bush breakfast in the Mara. One of the great safari pleasures. Wake at 6, head out at 6:30 (or so!) to see what happened last night and what you may be lucky enough to come across (a hyena playing in the water; three lionesses and their cubs; an enormous crocodile; tons of beautiful birds...). Then find a shady tree and break out the breakie.

“Oh Nella!”, sighed my mom, her voice full of worry and the subtext ‘what in the world were you thinking?’, seeping through, as I drove her that first time from Nairobi to my rented cottage on Lake Naivasha. “Oh Nella!”, she exclaimed as she saw my landlady’s garden, with lush plants everywhere and giraffe and hippo milling about on the plains below. The water has risen so much these past years that it’s now best to boat instead of walk- and it’s still the most stunning garden around!

Africa is opening up slowly but surely. After a week speaking with collaborators in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Rwanda, they are all open, with Covid protocols in place. International flights are arriving with no quarantines from most places. So if the travel itch is becoming relentless, imagine yourself in a private luxury tented camp or a family villa... huge open spaces with unlimited fresh air... and beautiful animals everywhere.

I have been showing some high-adrenaline moments on my recent insta stories so here is the other side of the story... What I think captured my heart 16 years ago when I came on my first safari ever to Kenya, riding in the north for 10 days, were moments like these. Yes, the power of the African wilderness is one of the most humbling and perspective-giving experiences one can have in whatever form it takes. But riding again after many years, finding myself and my horse walking alone, listening to the grasses and the birds, laughing around the table with new friends... you feel alone on the planet in the best kind of way and also intrinsically linked to it all. This is what really gets me.

I have just sent an update on life in Africa in Tin Trunk’s “un-newsletter”. If you are interested, please visit the website to email or PM me here. Ultimately, travel needs to have a reset. When we get on planes across the world, we will want it to be worth it- worth it for us, for our friends and families, for the planet as a whole. We have been forced into change - the travel industry very much so- it hasn’t been a choice for change but it now is an incredible opportunity to reshape and fine-tune for the better. We can make travel more intentional. We can make sure our choices benefit conservation and community. And for ourselves, we can steer away from box-ticking trips, learn about new places, have exciting new adventures, meet new people - while reconnecting with one another, and with ourselves. We can do what I have encouraged clients to do from the beginning- let Africa in and watch what happens! Because, as I say on the website, to be unmoved by the world - and unchanged by its journeys, is not an acceptable outcome.

This big beaut of a bird is a Saddle-billed Stork. They are common throughout most of Sub-Saharan Africa and are the tallest of all storks, with males reaching about 4.5 feet tall with wingspans of up to 8 feet, the better for alighting quickly and soaring easily. Males are larger and have dark brown eyes while females have the same plumage and markings but with bright yellow eyes. They live around water - so they love Botswana’s Okavango Delta, where I captured this gorgeous guy taking off last March. Oddly, they don’t have a syrinx, or vocal chords. So, chicks make a hissing sound to get attention and adults are silent. Their height allows them to wade around eating crustaceans, amphibians, beetles and even small mammals while being able to watch for predators over the long reeds and grasses. A majestic bird who brought silent awe to his observers as far back as 6000 years ago, when depicted in Egyptian hieroglyphics. No wonder he is one of the birds I seek out with clients who declare they “aren’t that into bird watching.” Ta-Dah!

Places like this (photos 1 and 2) will be ready and waiting to open their doors (if perhaps not their arms) when the wacky world is right again. So, if you are feeling like this (photo 3), don’t despair...Africa has patience, wide open spaces and pure air!
