Okay summer, you have some big adventure shoes to fill!

Saying goodbye to the last of winter in Mongolia and hello to summer! Adventures officially start in 3 days back to one of my favorite places, people, and animals in this country. It’s a trip I do every year at this time (hello, year 4) – do you know where I’m heading? Give me a guess if you think you do!👇🏻

Traditional Mongolian Mounted Archery 🏹

I’ve been obsessed with this sport ever since I first saw these badass archers a few years ago. Galloping and hitting targets at full speed takes an insane amount of skill, but they make it look easy.

Later this summer I’ll be joining them for 2 training camps to learn proper shooting techniques, including how to succesfully hit targets while galloping on a horse. It’s going to be an intense but crazy experience. I can’t wait!

DM me if you want to join me on this epic adventure ✉️

3 reasons I love visiting Gandantegchinlen Monastery 📿

1. Hearing the monks chant in the morning is the best way to start any day.
2. The 26-metre (85 ft) statue of Avalokiteśvara made of gilded bronze and precious stones always leaves me in awe.
3. This is some of the most interesting architecture you’ll find in Ulaanbaatar. There’s always something that catch’s your eye 🤍

📍 Shambala, eastern Gobi Desert, Mongolia

Visiting Shambala is an important pilgrimage for Mongolian Buddhists to make. Crossing thru the golden gate and carrying out a series of offerings and blessings is said to purify your soul and bring you good fortune.

🌸 It’s also the only place in Mongolia where you’ll find sakura trees that bloom for only a few days in early spring.

There’s a special frequency here, and Shambala is one of two recognized energy centers in the world. The second is in the Himalayan Mountains.

It’s no coincidence if you make it here. You were always meant to. There’s a special kind of beauty to that.

I’m going to make this pilgrimage again next year, Shambala is now a part of me. Will you join me and feel the energy of Shambala for yourself? 📿

Spotted this ovoo with 9 white banners (called suldes) flying high on the side of the road and couldn’t resist stopping.

Made from the hair of stallions, these banners represent peace and unity (white) or war (black).

And let me just tell you, if you ever saw Chinggis Khaan and his army rolling up on your town with a black banner leading the way, you were definitely not about to have a great day.

Last September driving views as ger camps close for the winter and the country turns a beautiful shade of gold.

More reasons why Mongolia in September is the best:
1. No crowds. Kids are back in school so locals are mostly back in the city. Tourists also typically don’t travel here after the end of August so you get the whole country to yourself. It’s great.
2. Temperatures are PERFECT. T-shirts in the day and puffer jackets at night. My favorite.
3. There is also much less rain than we get in the summer. And also less bugs.
4. Nomadic families are starting to move and prep for winter, which means they can use the extra hands if you’re looking for a more meaningful homestay experience.
5. The views never get old, especially since you can still reach these remote and less traveled to corners.

Normally when you see a shaman in Mongolia there are no photos, with ceremonies taking place late at and into the night. Once a ger door is shut and the spirits are summoned, there’s no going back, and there’s no pi***ng them off by leaving either.

That was part of what made visiting the 13th Century Complex’s Shaman section, where you can see costumes and ger’s representing different tribes from across the country, especially cool. It was crazy to see some of this stuff up close and actually have the chance to photograph it and take it all in in my own time and space.

The weather certainly wasn’t making it any less frightening to be so close to this stuff, either.

Yep, grandma’s khuushuur really is the best khuushuur. My where-has-this-been-all-my-life face says it all!

If you don’t know what khuushuur is, it’s one of my favorite things to eat in Mongolia.

To make it, you take a circle of flour dough, fold it in half like a taco, fill it with minced meat (usually mutton), pinch it closed, and deep fry it to perfectly crispy golden brown perfection.

You eat it with your hands, and ALWAYS watch for oil to spill out the end – hot khuushuur oil will make it to your clothes every time, no matter how hard you try to prevent it from happening.

It’s a hazard I’m willing to risk for a few bites of these delicious meat pockets when I’m in the countryside.

Driving Georgia to Mongolia... SOLO. Am I crazy, or is this a dream road trip?

6,886 kilometers in 93 hours. That's how far and long it would take me to drive straight from Tbilisi to Ulaanbaatar. I won't be doing that, exactly, because I plan to take this path a bit slower and safer, but I do plan to take on this route in the coming months. (Visa gods permitting.)

Why? Well, driving has always been meditative for me. But even I have to admit this is a whole new level of driving alone. It's a test in staying safe. In driving with my wits. In not feeling overwhelmed with long days, route delays, and almost certain border crossing issues.

It takes the ultimate faith in myself and a machine that I'm still getting to know every detail of.

But, I love the freedom of being behind the wheel of anything – even snowmobiles. Of not needing to rely on anyone. Of discovering myself through new experiences and destinations. Of pulling up to a stoplight or into a small town and turning men's heads when they see me behind the wheel of a massive machine.

So, preparing the Land Cruiser to drive from Georgia to Mongolia feels right. It feels like it's what I'm meant to be doing. And, the Land Cruiser feels like the only car up to the challenge (more on that later this week). I can't imagine another vehicle I'd rather be self-sufficient with.

I'm still working on some hurdles with Russian visas (if you have a recommended company to use for a Russian multiple-entry visa, drop a comment or DM 👇) and other border crossing questions with Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Still, with Mongolia opening its land borders this week, I'm one step closer to making this adventure a reality.

Why am I so in love with MONGOLIA? 🇲🇳

Why Mongolia? I get this question more times than I can count. It's not that people don't understand my fascination with this country (I mean, you'd have to be blind not to get it), it's that they don't understand why I've chosen Mongolia over all the other places I've seen in the world.

The answer is easy. Mongolia is still the wild west. It's what is so, so great about it. And also what is so, so terrible about it. And why it's not for most people.

Traveling down dirt roads for HOURS when it could have been a 30 minute drive on a paved road is equal parts frustration and exhilaration. Nothing here is easy. Navigation... weather... communication... it's always an adventure. But that's just it. It's an adventure.

This place reconnects me to myself. And the earth and the people around me. I'm never more present then when I'm here. And in a digital age where I'm constantly being pulled in every direction, it's what my soul craves. And that is WHY MONGOLIA.

For 44 years, Dakar has been synonymous with adventure. Intriguing and attracting the most extreme off-road explorers and motor enthusiasts from countries far and wide around the globe, the race has aptly earned the title as the most demanding and most iconic rally for a reason.

It’s no small feat to win a race like Dakar, a race that typically spans 10 – 14 days, taking competitors over some 8,000 kilometers of some of the most extreme terrains in the world, but when you do? Well, that makes you an instant legend.

These guys are heros in my book. And while I'll probably never race Dakar myself (never say never, right), I'll forever respect the heck out of anyone who does.

If you could race Dakar in any category, which would it be - bike, quad, car, SSV, truck, or classic car? 🏁

Winter wonderland weekend adventure in Georgia’s most beautiful village, Bakhmaro.

Have you liked my Meanwhile in Georgia page? Now that tourism is opening back up in Georgia (US, EU, Israeli, UAE citizens can travel here with a negative PCR test, citizens from anywhere else with a vaccine), I’ll be updating this website’s content, as well as it’s social pages, more frequently.
