This last weekend I attended a conference in Braga regarding how the Bracari and the Romans dressed back then, as preparation for Braga Romana - Reviver Bracara Augusta. In the end they needed volunteers so I went, of course 🤣 But it helped me to better understand how to fold the outer layer, I still had doubts with that and how to use the fibula.

Some days I just happen to stumble upon curious coincidences. In this case, I started the tour speaking about André Soares, and then when I get to the Municipality Square, where we have 2 of his works, from the Palace’s door leaves the greatest Historian of André Soares’ life and work - Eduardo Pires de Oliveira. I don’t know the probability of this, I’m awful at Math, but I’d say it’s not that huge 😂

Memories from a week spent in the North of Portugal with a group from Madrid. The lady in charge with the group took the time to send me a message to know they had arrived safely and to send me love.

Yesterday night. The rituals of the Holy Week of Braga started yesterday and while I was waiting for the start of the Via Crucis I took this picture.

The is Saint James’ Tower, in Braga. The image on top is called Our Lady of the Tower. Since it’s a representation of the Virgin Mary, she is dressed with a red tunic and a blue veil, the colors that you normally see on Our Lady of Solitude and Our Lady of Sorrows images.

Holy Week is the week that tells you about the Passion of Christ and the suffering he and his mother endured. So under Mary’s image you see the image of Jesus already arrested. He was arrested and mocked for being the King of the Jews, because nobody believed he could be the king. So the guards placed a crown of thorns on his head and a red cape to represent the symbols of the king.

Purple was the most expensive color in Middle Ages so it became associated with Jesus’ pain. That is why it is the color of Holy Week. In Easter Sunday and onwards, the colour will be the white, to represent the Ressurrection.

Next Friday we're going to have the Procession of the Burial of Our Lord. It's known in Braga as the Procession of Silence, but I may add that it could also be the Procession of Darkness, since the streets were so dark last year. You can see on the pictures that the ciity lights were covered in black. Black is the colour for mourning in Portugal.

Pictures from last year's Ecce Homo Procession. Ecce Homo is Latin for "Here's the man" and it's a sentence used by Pilatus when he showed Jesus to the people. The representation of Jesus shows you an almost naked person, with tied hands. He was arrested and he is in his most vulnerability. This procession is also known in Braga as the Procession of the Fire since some farricocos carry fire.

Some stills from the last year's Procession of the Little Donkey. We call it like that because we use a real donkey to transport the image of Mary and Jesus. It's a Procession about the Old Testament (or Torah for Jewish people) and it ends in the New Testament with Jesus and his parent returning to Nazareth. Because of this, you will see Jewish symbols and people dressed as Hebrews and Egyptians.

Later today I will post a video where you can see the real donkey!
