My brother and I are sad to report that our mom, Patty Flanagan, died last week in her beloved home in Vermont. But we’re also grateful to say that she knew how much we all loved her. She was joking and singing “Stayin’ Alive”up to the very end. And lucky for us all, she was able to share her memories and tell us how much she loved us all too. So while we mourn the fact that she only survived for three months after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, the love cloud that surrounded her in her beloved home in Vermont was as healing for us as it was for her. We’re all gonna miss her sense of humor, outgoingness, feistiness, fashion sense and compassion. But thankfully she died in peace. She shared her peace with us. And we’re all better for it. So do yourself a favor and go hug the people you love. And be sure to tell them Patty Flanagan sent you.

It was 31 years ago today. I was penniless and living on an abandoned boat in English Harbour on the Caribbean island of Antigua when I made a “collect” call from this phone booth overlooking Falmouth Harbour that changed the entire trajectory of my life. I’d sailed there from Newport, RI. But I’d started drinking again after almost 2 years of sobriety. And in spite of the bright caribbean sunshine, the despair, fear, and loneliness I felt was pitch black. The cheap booze I was drinking only compounded the fear, loneliness, and dread I felt. Then I saw a note on the message board that said “Friends of Bill W gathering for Christmas fellowship.” Thankfully, the pain was bad enough to motivate me to go see the people who posted that message. And they literally saved my life by pointing the way back to meetings, spirituality and sobriety. Words really can’t express how grateful I am to be sober. But I always try on my anniversary because without all the kind and loving people (friends of Bill W and others) who’ve helped, and continue to help me, I’d be dead. My goal with this annual post is to be as useful as they were because instead of dying a lonely alcoholic death at the age of 25. I’ve been granted the gift of watching my young son giggle, my wife glow, and my family heal. Of course I’ve faced pain that I wouldn’t wish on my worse enemy (if I even have any enemies anymore). But it’s all worth it if I remember the simple stuff the old guys at the back of the room continue to teach me. Trust in a power greater than yourself. Clean house. Tell the truth. You can’t run away from yourself. Help others, even when you don’t want to. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Keep it simple. Don’t take yourself too seriously. And, we’re all so much bigger, deeper, connected, powerful, loving, unselfish, joyful, and free than our thoughts allow us to be. Sooo…if you are having problems with booze and/or drugs…I’m living proof that you can recover from that seemingly hopeless situation. I’ll give you a hint. It’s 142 meters long. Now, for those of us less-metrically inclined, that’s a whopping 465-feet-long—way longer than a professional football field. In fact, Brin’s new yacht—that was built by Lürssen and features exterior styling by Germán Frers and interior and exterior social spaces designed by Nauta Design—wouldn’t even fit in a NFL stadium.
But, you know what? It’s a superyacht. And it’s owned by one of the wealthiest people on the planet. It’s supposed to be big. And better still, it may be as big as a cruise ship but it has the looks and proportions, (and I’m sure will operate) like one of the biggest, coolest, finest crafted, most exclusive private yachts in the world…because that’s exactly what it is. I’m incredibly grateful for my job that brings me to amazing places around the world with amazing people. And I mean it when I say that “sharing the love” from each trip with my stories and in social feed is my main goal. But this trip with aboard the is even more special because I want to share the love and adventure directly my mom and her hospice care team (and you all too) because out she was diagnosed with terminal cancer a few weeks ago, and I want her to know how much she is loved. And since she’s always been my greatest instagram follower (note the photos of us), I thought…why don’t i bring her and her amazing care team with me on this trip (with lots of insta live posts) so she can not only share this amazing adventure in Indonesia, but also share her journey with us too. She even says “maybe we can help other people who are facing the same situation” with these posts. So…stay tuned. I’m to be talking to mom and her care team directly because life is fleeting and precious and fun and painful too. And life is even better, and more fun and meaningful and bareble when we share the love.

So, what was the first thing that happened when I got out of the official tour car that pulled in behind the barriers at the a bunch of years ago? Somebody took my picture. In fact, a bunch of people did. Of course, they were waiting to photograph a real VIP coming to see the start of stage, but, it’s obvious that they shoot first and figure out who they were photographing (and delete!) later
What’s the second thing that happened? We ducked under the ropes so our host and Tour big shot could talk to, and introduce Richard Mille and myself to Mark Cavendish.
“Cav is a huge watch guy,” his team rep said. “I’m sure he’d love to see you…He’s in a meeting on the bus now, but, let me see if he’s available”
Less than a minute later, Cav was literally shaking like a schoolgirl who was just about to meet Justin Bieber when he emerged from the bus shortly after being informed that Richard Mille would like to meet him.
Then Richard gave him a watch “for luck.”
And he then went out and simply won the stage. And now no one has ever won more Tour stages! Congratulations !!! So grateful to watch history happen today!

Milan may have been overflowing with crisp design, stylish designers, and creative installations at during Milano Design Week recently. But I’m pretty sure no other installation got more attention, or was harder to pull off than what Azimut Yachts achieved when they moored a 57-foot-long Seadeck 6 in the swimming pool of the Bagni Misteriosi!
