Europe's Big 5 Spotting some of the world's most striking mammals in their natural environment Europe’s big 5 Wie zijn we? Wat doen we? Waar komen we vandaan?

------------------------------

A wise man once said that one should do what he likes to do, what he is good at. Europe's big 5 took note of this, and is an agency offering naturalist trips where one or several mammal species play a key role. To focused? Off coarse not. These larger mammals are often to be found in the most pristine areas, where nature is present in all its glory. We look at everything but focus on large mammals. What we have to offer? One word... Expertise! Large mammals (and especially carnivores) not only demand good Belgian guides, but also well experienced local contacts who provide us with the best info year after year...

Another remarkable encounter with an Eurasian Lynx in Bieszczady!

Assisted by my comrade and good fellow Mark Kaptein, I guide on an annual basis freelance for Naturetrek's tour 'In search of the Eurasian Lynx' in Poland. One trip in particular in spring this year (2024) could only be praised with superlatives. Perhaps even the most successful ever in terms of turning the title of this tour into reality. Overall, after incredible sightings of brown bears and wolves, we finally concluded with a long-term sighting of a lynx up close! An atmospheric version of that sighting, accompanied by photos and video footage, has been added as a news item to the EB5 website!

One day left in the Sierra Morena area. 4 different (Odon, Mohena, Icaro and probably Margaza) adult Iberian lynx so far. All the natural way by scanning from vantage points. Witnessed prolonged natural behavior: dozing, hunting, interaction between male and female, patrolling and scent marking. For sure EB5's most favorite European large carnivore! Tomorrow towards Donana!

Currently on our way to Spain for a first visit in 2024 to the Sierra Morena area near Andujar ; one of our favorite European backyards. Doing as good as last year probably a mission impossible! For those interested in all three large carnivores (bear-wolf-lynx) present on the Iberian peninsula: a few places left on our autumn visit to Spain. Don't hesitate to send an RFI to [email protected]!

In this news item we highlight, in words and images, four of the nine sightings we made of Iberian Lynx.... Read more

China - the winter sequel following a visit during the summer

Wondering what we will see of primates, ungulates and red pandas at the end of this year. In any case, it will be in an environment that is no longer green with leaves. It makes the search for the Giant Panda, the main goal of the trip, a little more realistic. Scanning for brown bears, wolves, lynx or snow leopards from vantage points is something we are more familiar with. But seeing a Giant Panda suddenly appear in a treetop is something that will surprise us. We are eagerly looking forward to it! In any case, one thing is certain: on New Year's Eve we will have an extensive Chinese meal. And more than likely before and after too - LOL!

News from the field: wolf and lynx with a surplus of brown bear

We have been successfully combining wolf and lynx for many years on the Spanish mainland, but adding a bear is something that we did not realize, at least in the autumn. In practice it turns out not to be that difficult. Three days in Northern Spain, a six-hour drive south and staying there for three days and the job is done.

Although the journey is not yet over, the total numbers of large carnivores currently stands at four adult Cantabrian brown bears, five Iberian wolves and two Iberian lynx. And all this naturally without the help of local agents, feeding places or the use of hides. More details in a next news item.

Just like last year, a short news item in relation to a bear sighting in Cantabria, Spain. This news item highlights an incident involving three bears that we observed the year before. This, before their deaths due to a fight that took place between them a few days later. The main protagonist was the male bear with infanticide in mind. The details of the deadly encounter are described in the 2023 trip report.

In this news item, a few anecdotes and highlights of the trip report to Spain to observe brown bears in... Read more

Iberian Lynx extravaganza

Superb, prolonged and multiple observations of eight different Iberian Lynx indviduals forced us to make an extra effort.

So, since our last Spanish trip for the Iberian Lynx was so great, we did our best. A bilingual report and an extensive news item with many photos have been added to the website.

Within this the link where you can find our latest words and images of this magnificent feline:

News items added to the website

Despite a time-consuming job (selecting and editing photos, writing and improving texts, working on layout and finally uploading everything) we have found time to add four news items to our website. The news contains a lot of photos and info from the field of our five main target species: Brown Bear, European Bison, Wolverine, Wolf and Lynx. Also a news item concerning an atypical EB5 animal: Monk Seal! We wish you lots of reading and viewing pleasure!

A special thanks to the following people: John Wright, Tom Mabbett, Mark Kaptein and Pieter Jan D'Hondt for their contribution to these news items.
