Iberian Wolf pack appearance near a roadkill
Checking an old USB stick, I found some nice video footage of an Iberian Wolf pack eating from a road kill that was placed by a local ranger in their core habitat, close to their denning spot. Knowing the sound of the ranger’s car and his smell, the pack co-operated nicely for a lucky few, including myself, as we watched the wolves having desayunar (aka breakfast) .

One of the several Wolverines in front of the photography hides in Karelia, last weekend in Finland. More in particular this video shows a female consuming a forelag of a drown Elk that was used as carrion. Don't forget to click on the HD button to watch the video in full quality!
Cantabrian Brown Bear spring galore
A bit easier compared with last year, succeeded once again in finding browsing Cantabrian Brown Bears in Asturias, Spain. After several days being present in the area, had knowledge of 20 - 30 bears seen from different public vantage points in the area. Watched several of them for hours while bussy feeding on spring vegetation. Or what is called a genuine wildlife experience! Back there late August! More about these beauties - and their rising population in the Cantabrian Mountains – later in our NEWS chapter!
POSING EUROPEAN BISON BULL
Guiding freelance next month, it is important to know exact locations where herds of European Bison roam in the vast Bieszczady area. Winter time keeps them inside the forest as nearby meadows are still covered with snow. This bull posed rather well in front of a trailcam!

Actieve beren tijdens de winter. Het blijft toch steeds weer impressionant om deze rakkers aan te treffen op cameravallen wanneer Bieszczady bedekt is door een dik pak sneeuw!
Brown Bears don't hibernate in Bieszczady. Tracks and trailcam footage proof that these fellows are active year round. These 'trapped indivudals', a she bear with two cubs, appeared less than 500 metres away from the front door of the overnight location we use in the area!

European bisons...drinking and relaxing in the San river, March 2017. During 2 out of 4 (one national, three international) spring Biezczady visits; we watched this herd at exactly the same location. Yeah, right!
Too close!
Bit of a problem is the distance of appearing predators while seated in forest hides. As you can see, it often happens that animals (like this wolverine near Lieksa) appear very close to the hides. When using a 400 mm lens, they just don’t fit in the full frame camera view! Using a 300 mm lens, 70-200 or 100-400 a solution for this 'problem'...
Bit curious if Europe's heaviest ungulate will appear too during the next 2 weeks while guiding a (mainly birding) tour for Starling in Belarus! Wolves, lynxes and bears occur in Belarus too, but spotting them more difficult and for sure not comparable with our outstanding and multiple encounters we had during all our tours this spring in Poland. Last visit there produced 3 wolf sightings, one bear and 3 bison herds. But no Terek Sandpipers, Azure Tits and GGO's in Poland ; so we have other and more targets to go for this time! Really enormously looking forward to guide this trip! 2b continued!
WOLF!
Recent rumours about a Wolf sighting in Southern Belgium are always tricky to substantiate without real evidence. Wouldn't it just be fantastic if it turns out to be true? We just received a nice trailcam video footage and a corresponding text message from a Spanish colleague who is part of our EB5 network. The text shows that sadly wolves are still, even in Spain, more hated than loved animals…
The wolf in the area of Valladolid is getting increasingly scarce. It is on the verge of extinction in many places. A shame. The nefarious management of the species in Castilla y Leon poses a very serious danger to the species. The attached video was made this summer and shows one of the last alfa wolf couples being resident in the area of Valladolid.

Niet minder dan 12 verschillende exemplaren zagen we tijdens onze beide reizen het afgelopen najaar. Meermaals deden er zich unieke fotografische mogelijkheden voor. De exclusieve resultaten daarvan zijn te bewonderen op groot formaat aan onze stand tijdens het Lowland fotofestival. Waarom deze beide kittens graat mager zijn? Omdat er nog steeds een schaarste heerst betreffende konijnen (voor 90% hun hoofdvoedsel) in de sierra van Andujar.

A total of 12 different individuals were seen during both our autumn tours; twice we experienced a close encounter of two different females with kittens. These eyeball to eyeball experiences resulted in superb and prolonged views!

De bladeren vallen…temperaturen dalen…het jaar vordert…voor we het weten is de donkere periode er weer…tijd om even stil te staan bij wat we tot dusver al zagen van onze kerndieren…wolven…om er maar één te noemen…de diversiteit en kwantiteit met betrekking tot gedane waarnemingen in 2016…het mag gezegd worden: het lijstje is weer redelijk impressionant! Jagende exemplaren (Polen), roepende individuen (Polen, Spanje), patrouillerende roedels (Polen, Spanje, Finland), roedels die tijdens het ochtendgloren verzamelen en wat met hun jongen spelen na hun nachtelijke escapades (Spanje), individuen in interactie met beren en veelvraten (Finland), een residentiële roedel meermaals pal voor onze hut in Polen, alfa-exemplaren met jongen bij hun den (Spanje),… En we zijn nog niet klaar. We hebben kortelings immers nog een wolven- en lynxentrip in Spanje en sluiten het jaar af in Polen. 2b continued!
Wolves – nature at its best – another great strike so far!
Autumn is definitely arriving…leaves are falling…temperatures dropping…time to look back over what we’ve achieved so far. We have had another successful year in observing wolves, for sure one of our core mammals to find. Apart from several prolonged and superb views of the species, we also had a variety of observations this year which was again rather remarkable. We had several close views of a pack in front of our hide in Poland where we saw them on the hunt too. We watched them interacting with bears and wolverines in Finland, heard them howling from our sleeping rooms in Poland and in Spain watched them from a vantage point and observed packs playing with their cubs at different Spanish locations. And: the year isn’t over yet. With a forthcoming Spain departure (the 3rd this year) and ending the year in Poland there is more wolf watching potential to add too our already impressive list! We’ll keep you posted!

Rutland Birdfair - in volle voorbereiding
Vanaf morgen zijn we, samen met andere werknemers en medewerkers van onze officiële partner Starling, present op één van 's werelds grootste eco-events: de Rutland Birdfair nabij Londen. Voor het derde jaar op rij nu al. Met een verwacht bezoekersaantal van om en bij de 100.000, zullen we ons beste beentje mogen voorzetten. Om in alle rust goed voorbereid te zijn, reisden we gisteren reeds af. Vandaag zetten we de stand op. Het bijhorende, bewegende beeldmateriaal zal er oa draaien om bezoekers te overtuigen van onze kwaliteiten; Finland is immers één van onze betere, internationale produkten!

Afrikaanse euforie!
Wilde honden; ongetwijfeld de parel van Afrika! Tijdens onze zoektocht weet dit enigmatische zoogdier keer op keer aan ons oog te ontsnappen. Niet moeilijk! De beesten zijn steeds onderweg en zelden stationair. Actief tijdens het ochtendgloren en de avondschemering. Nadien verstopt in de alom aanwezige vegetatie die Kruger hen biedt. Een mobiele speld zeg maar. Schuw en zeldzaam ook. Het Kruger park -dat in oppervlakte even groot als België is- waarin we ons bevinden telt geen 200 exemplaren. De totale populatie op wereldschaal: om en bij de 3500 exemplaren. In Kruger worden ze bovendien steevast verjaagd en zelfs gedood door hun vleesetende concurrenten. Meermaals arriveren we zo ergens te laat. Frustrerend en pijnlijk om telkens weer te moeten aanhoren: ‘Ze zijn net verjaagd door territoriale hyena’s en leeuwen.’ Maar dan is het zover. Op dag zes is het geluk ons goedgezind. Afgaand op een informatiebord waarop gedane ochtendwaarnemingen staan ingevuld, begeven we ons na het ontbijt naar een plaats waar wilde honden gezien zijn. En ja hoor! Daar liggen ze! Pal naast de weg ligt een pack van 5 individuen wat te kuieren in de schaduw die wat struikjes hen bieden. Zaaaaaaaaalig! Adrenaline, gebalde vuisten, animo! Na anderhalf uur bij de beesten te hebben gestaan, rijden we weg in een roes van genot. En de ban blijkt gebroken: daags nadien stoten we, bij het verlaten van het park op twee andere individuen die op jaagpad zijn. Ervoor staan we nog oog in oog met een luipaard (de vijfde waarneming van de reis) en werpen we nog een snelle blik op twee slapende leeuwen (de zesde waarneming van de reis). Afrika boven!

In schril contrast met de Europese grote 5, is het spotten van de Afrikaanse grote 5 wel degelijk doenbaar binnen een tijdsspanne van één dag. We verwezenlijkten het de afgelopen week al twee keer in twee verschillende parken in Zuid-Afrika. Luipaard zonder twijfel daarbij de meest enigmatische verschijning van de vijf! In de regel zijn ze schuw en actief tijdens de nacht. Waren wij blij met dit curieus exemplaar dat een kijkje kwam nemen pal op de middag nabij een schuilhut waarin we zaten opgesteld! Pure elegantie en de perfecte aerodynamica al die Felidae! Nog imposanter waren beide ontmoetingen (tot dusver) met wat ongetwijfeld Afrika's mooiste zoogdier is: Wilde Hond. Hou onze volgende posting dus alvast in de gaten!
The African big 5 versus the European big 5
In contrast with the European big 5: scoring the African big 5 all in one day isn't a big issue. We managed it twice in two different parks during our prospection tour currently running in South Africa. Totally unexpected we were lucky too (twice so far) with a sighting of Africa's most enigmatic mammal: Painted Wild Dog! Keep an eye on our next posting!

Voor België, behoort de vos zeker tot diens Big5. Al voelen deze piepkleine vossenjongen zich waarschijnlijk nog niet klaar voor het grote werk. Deze beelden werden gefilmd door Karl, toen ie recent met Pieter-Jan op een vossennest stootte toen ze dassen zochten.
Wij bij Europesbig5 zien vele tientallen vossen per jaar, en zijn grote fan van reintje. Een predator maar vooral regulator, met een heel belangrijke rol in onze vaak ontwrichte habitats.
