Did you know that when Horsetail Fall lights up like fire during the sunset in February, the effect is only visible from a certain angle? On today, make sure you take this into account if you’re looking to visit our park next month for the Horsetail Fall event (along with getting your entrance reservation for visiting on most weekends and the holiday!)

Although you certainly get a nice view of El Capitan and the fall from the west, the famous effect only occurs if you watch from a more easternly vantage, such as in El Capitan Picnic Area. The decision of where to go is quite easy these days as a set of road and trail closures during the event will funnel you into some of these prime viewing locations (and away from more sensitive ecological features like riverbanks.) However, to see the effect, you’re going to need to park and grab a spot in the designated areas alongside everyone else.

So, get your reservation on Recreation.gov two days in advance of your trip if you’re visiting on the last three weekends or holiday this February, and ultimately plan to arrive no later than mid-morning for the sunset. Even though Horsetail Fall may be visible near Bridalveil Fall, there’s no “firefall” to see for those stuck in traffic west of El Capitan.

For more information about the Horsetail Fall event, including logistical, safety, and resource protection details, visit https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/horsetailfall.htm.

"California Quests is a recreational equipment rental service that I've handcrafted to give travelers a fun, safe and memorable outdoor experience while simultaneously creating a quick and easy online way to get bikes delivered straight to your vacation rental, so all you have to is focus on is getting the most out of your trip to Mariposa County. Whether you’re planning on visiting Yosemite or experiencing the plethora of local trails scattered all over this beautiful place, I want people to be able to come here and leave feeling that they were able to explore everything they wanted to, and had an amazing time doing it. In order to guarantee a one of a kind experience, it’s my goal to make sure that the people renting my equipment are getting high quality, premium gear. I believe that any journey worth taking shouldn’t be limited by the equipment that you use, I believe that the equipment you use should open up new possibilities and make your quest seem limitless."

Beginning Friday, May 20, 2022, Yosemite National Park will implement a temporary peak-hours reservation system. Building on lessons learned during the summer reservation systems in 2020 and 2021, the peak hours reservation system is designed to spread visitation out and reduce chronic congestion in the park. The reservation requirement will be in place through September 30, 2022.

Park visitors will need a reservation to enter the park between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. seven days per week (this includes people passing through the park). Visitors entering the park outside of the peak hours are not required to have a reservation.

Visit go.nps.gov/faq for more information.
