Attention Everyone! Your country and the Troop Train need you ... to scour your family and friends for WW2 veterans. At this late hour, it is more and more difficult to find able bodied vets who can make our train. We want to honor them and say "THANKS" one more time for their service to our country. We have seen a marked decrease in the number of WW2 attendees, for obvious reasons ... these folks are up there in age! For those still hardy enough to climb train steps and desirous of a wonderful day of fun and commemoration ... please send them our way.

We just found out that Pearl Harbor Survivor, Bill Greenhouse has passed away. He will be missed. He rode the Pearl Harbor Day Troop Train many times and always had great stories and antidotes.

Pearl Harbor Troopers ... please tell your friends about us ... we didn't get our usual mention in AAA'a Westway magazine this year and our numbers are slim so far for this year's sailing of the troop train. A wonderful time is had by all as we honor our greatest generation and enjoy a ride "back in time" aboard vintage railcars with the sights and sounds of an earlier time.

A great article explaining what we do on the trip. Step back in time with us.

Jason Thorpe was our "guest barber" on a very recent excursion from Oakland to Klamath Falls, Oct 10 -12, 2015. He had a great time performing the tonsorial arts aboard the Overland Trail. We fully expect to have a barber on the 2015 Pearl Harbor Day Troop Train ... see you aboard train!

I don't need to remind you that our beloved family or friends of the Greatest Generation are passing away at an alarming rate ... if they are still in decent health and able to climb our train stairs, please gather them up and make our 14 annual train honoring THEM! HALF fare for all WW2 vets and their wives.

Friends,

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pearl Harbor Survivor and World War II veteran Mr. Harlan J. Searle, He was 93.

Mr. Searle was on the USS California in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed repeatedly by Japanese warplanes on Dec. 7, 1941.

"You never forget something like that. You never want anyone else to go through it," he said in a 2012 interview with the Globe Gazette.

Searle, who was 19 at the time, had just finished eating breakfast with his brother Ervin when the bombing began. As they went their separate ways that day, they never saw each other again. Ervin was killed in the bombing.

The bombs blew huge holes in the ship and caused it to be inundated with water up to his neck, Searle recalled in the interview. He said the sailor next to him shook hands with him and said, "I guess this is it."

His next memory was that of being in a Navy hospital two days later. He never knew who rescued him. After the war, he returned to Mason City where he operated a construction business for many years until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Arnita, and six children.

On behalf of a grateful nation, we salute Mr. Searle for your dedication and service to our nation.
