If you are looking for ideas, pick one of the ideas provided below:

1) Mobile-based graphics fusion workflow (Med-Streaming)
Graphic Fusion Workflow™ allows physicians to create treatment plans or develop clinical findings by drawing on specialty-based diagrams. GFW technology provides a graphical history and sketches library containing different parts of the anatomy. The drawings correlate with the database and create structured language, further supporting the quest to create minable data in all facets of the digital solution. An encounter that might have required 15 to 20 clicks and many minutes of time in a typical EMR platform would only take a few seconds using this new technology. These types of technologies also create communication efficiencies by providing a visual medical history, which quickly orients the physician to the patient’s past procedures and diagnostic studies. The purpose of this project is to create a mobile application that allows graphics fusion workflow through the following
- Displays a list of exams
- When the user clicks on an exam, open the graphics fusion workflow showing the anatomy for the vascular tree
- Allow the user to click on certain tools like stenosis or aneurysm using touch-based tool
- A backend SQL database
Bonus
- show a stenosis trend overtime by click on the anatomy

2) Aorta CT surgery planning (Mentor: Med-Streaming)
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a localized enlargement of the abdominal aorta such that the diameter is greater than 3 cm or more than 50% larger than normal diameter. They usually cause no symptoms except when ruptured (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdominal_aortic_aneurysm). Surgery planning is the preoperative method of pre-visualising a surgical intervention and the devices that will be used during intervention such as stent grafts (http://www.medtronic.com/us-en/patients/treatments-therapies/stent-graft-aaa/what-is-it.html). The purpose of this project is to develop a mobile based surgery planning tool using 3D models extracted from CT images with the following features
- simple exam list
- Load 3D mesh like STL with some segmentation like blood vessel, clots, stenosis ..etc.
- Zoom , rotate ...etc
- Plan stent placement procedure
Bonus
- show medical images synchronized with the center line inside the 3D mesh

3) Market place for in-house medical services (Mentor: Dr Mahmoud Ismail)

Many patients are not able to go to hospitals to receive the medical services they need. They need the service to be delivered at home instead. They need the service to be delivered at home either for convenience or because of blocking medical condition. Example, infants who have cold. Moreover, some of those patients need medical services at regular basis. For example elderly people who need urine catheters. The idea is to create a market place through a mobile app or website that allows patients to schedule in home medical service, same idea as Uber, Taskty, Airbnb.com…etc. The market place will connect patients to service providers who work individually or as a legal entity. See the ad below that shows how this business run now.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA or triple A)[6] is a localized enlargement of the abdominal aorta such that the diameter is greater than 3 cm or more than 50% larger than normal diameter.[1] They usually cause no symptoms except when ruptured.[1] Occasionally, abdominal, back, or leg pain may occur.[...

Quick overview of the competition:

Q1: What is it?
The IEEE EMBS Students Chapter is launching the Project Development Competition for the third year in a row, Summer 2016.

Q2: Who can participate?
This competition is for students currently in 2nd and 3rd academic year.
Each team will be composed of 3-5 students.
The competition is not limited to Cairo University and is open to other universities.

Q3: What the participants will do?
The participants will engage in developing prototypes for products in the healthcare field during the summer vacation. The prototypes must address healthcare market needs and have the potential for turning into actual, sellable products.

Q4: What are the type of projects the teams can work on?
Each team is responsible for choosing an idea for a product that satisfies a market need. The product could be a service, software, or hardware. Teams can select ideas from the ideas listed below or bring their own idea.

Idea1: Web based DICOM viewer
The aim of this project is to create a web-based DICOM viewer that enables the medical professionals to view DICOM images without a need to deploy the viewer on the workstation. It also allows medical professionals to access the information over the Internet, even if they are in a remote location. The viewer should enable the professionals to do set of measurements on the DICOM images such as Distance between two points and angle calculations.

Idea2: Website for private clinics review
The idea is to create a website that allows patient to review private clinics. Patients depend on doctors’ reputation as the main evaluation criteria. There is a market need for a website that guides patients on their search for caliber doctors. The revenue source is the ads and clinics subscription on the website.

Idea3: Mobile App for blood donors’ availability
Hospitals run into situations when blood is needed urgently. The idea here is to develop a Mobile App that broadcast messages for nearby blood donors if blood is needed urgently. People who have the app on their phone will receive a call for blood demand. The call will include the healthcare facility location, and the blood type needed.

Q5: As a participant I may need a mentor, what shall I do?
The organizing committee will assign one mentor from the industry to each team. There is no guarantee that each team will have a mentor, though. Mentors availability depends on the number of participating teams. Mentor assignment will be according to the teams’ registration order and mentor’s interest in the product ideas. The mentor will support his/her team in the project planning and management through regular weekly meetings.

Q6: How long is it?
The competition run for 10 weeks.

Q7: How will the projects evaluate?
A committee from faculty and the industry judges the projects at the last week, and there will be awards for the top 3 teams.

Q8: Is there an evaluation Criteria?
1. Project Idea: social impact, marketability and Innovation.
2. Implementation: prototype works, level of complexity, user Interface.
3. Project management/Team: final round presentation, documentation and demo.

Q9: Are there any sponsors?
The competition is sponsored by Diagnosoft, IEEE Students Chapter and SBME Department, Cairo University

Stay tuned for more details.
