How often do we say to ourselves “I’m gonna do that one day!”

If like me, you’ve been saying it but never actually did anything about it, then hopefully the following true story will change your life…as it did mine. A number of years ago a Allen, a friend of mine fell sick while working overseas. Allen was a tough bloke who’d never complain of being ill. He was always the last man standing. For h

im to make the decision to fly home to Perth, Australia to see a doctor meant he thought something was wrong…very wrong. I had arranged to catch up with Allen after he’d seen the doctor, so when my phone rang and Allen’s name came up I was expecting him to organise a quiet drink at the pub. Instead it was his wife calling to say Allen was dead. Allen was in his early 40’s, had been married for 10 years and had two awesome boys. Allen’s business was going well but draining a lot of his time. His family life was pretty good for someone who spent a lot of time working on the other side of the world. Any time at home was spent with the family. This was ok with Allen, however when we did meet, he would often tell me of the things he was going to do. He wanted to cross the Nullarbor with his boys to see the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, he wanted to take his wife to Thailand for a week, he wanted to “chill” on the beaches of the Bahamas. These were all things Allen was “gonna” do but never made time for. A rare form of Myeloma (bone marrow cancer) stopped Allen from achieving his dreams. To say it affected me is an understatement. We were the same age, we’d been married for roughly the same time, we both had two kids and I had another on the way. What if that had happened to me? It’s too easy to make excuses to put things off, to say to yourself “I’ll do that when…”. Life is too short to say (especially so in Allen’s case) you’ll do it later. As Richard Branson says “Screw it, just do it” and thats exactly what I did. Without asking or even telling my wife, I booked a Himalayan Motorcycle Adventure. I had been chatting to Buddhi in India for over a year about joining one of his Motorcycle Adventures through the Himalayas with the intention of doing it “one day”. After that shocking phone call, I made the decision instantly to do the trip. I put a post on Facebook saying “I’m going on a 2 week motorcycle adventure through the Himalayas, everybody is welcome to join me”. By the end of the day three people said they’d come with me, by the end of the week another five people were in and by the end of the month we had fifteen people from all around Australia booked to go to India and ride the highest motorable road in the world. Those 15 people had the best experience of their lives and it inspired us to provide the opportunity to others who wanted to experience the same life changing experience that we had. Hence Himalayan Heroes went from being a one off adventure to what we believe is the best Himalayan Motorcycle adventure available. After a few days in the Mustang Valley, it's awesome to spend a day off in Pokhara before heading up to Manang. Some riders choose to spend it on Phewa Lake. We have adventures in March and November 2025 and you're welcome to join us.

Last year when we entered the Mustang Valley in Nepal, I found myself riding alone. I took the opportunity to head offroad and go across the river bank and hope that I found a way out. That's why I love riding in Nepal, the freedom to do what you want.

We survived the mayhem of riding into Srinagar and jumped on some shikaras to get to our houseboat accommodation on Dal Lake. This photo must have been taken after a short cruise on the lake to an island in the middle. The following day we went to see where Jesus is buried.

The experience touched Dan as his blurry eyesight got better immediately. Jesus still working miracles...or it was a coincidence that he stopped taking Diamox...

Coming around the corner into ZojiLa always stops riders in their tracks. The view is unlike anything they've seen so far. Unfortunately, the mountain pass will fall into ruin as soon as the 14km tunnel is completed. One of the most stunning mountain passes will be gone forever.

Next time we head to Nepal, lets do a speed run and see how quickly we can get across!

It's everyday life for the locals but a heart-thumping moment if you haven't done it before.

Halfway up the Mustang Valley near Marpha, we stopped on this bridge and waited for the others to catch up. The sun beat down on us, making it fairly warm in the middle of the day.

A local woman was walking towards me. She must have felt I was the most trustworthy looking among the reprobates I was riding with. She gestured that she'd like me to give her a lift on the back of the bike further up the valley.

No problems, "jump on" I said. The roads were rough and it wasn't long before a gentle tap on the shoulder accompanied by a quiet but commanding voice meant she wanted me to take it easy. When we got to where she wanted to go 10 minutes later, she jumped off the bike and that's when I noticed she had a baby wrapped up on her back!

At the end of one of the longest days on the & adventure, you'd think that most riders would want a lie-down. Altitude and adrenaline do funny things to some riders though.

A few years ago, a group from QLD found the going a bit tough getting to this campsite so I informed last year's group what to expect. When we pulled into camp, we looked at each other and wondered what all the fuss was about. So much so, that a few of the riders went for a hike up the mountain and took this photo of the campsite.

One of my favourite night stays in the entire world, I'll take it over any 5-star resort.

The view from the guest house in the Mustang Valley, looking at the direction of the day's travel. In years gone by the roads were extremely challenging but they are sealing the roads slowly so that it is becoming more accessible for the local residents.

There are still some gnarly roads, water crossings, suspension bridges and river beds to cross though.

When heading up the Mustang Valley in Nepal, the town at the end of the road is Muktinath. The last bit of civilisation for trekkers before they make their way through the valley to the left of the picture to Annapurna.
There is an ancient Vishnu temple located at the top of a long set of stairs, which we call the . The temple is known as 'the lord of liberation', and is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

I look back at the photos of adventures gone by and it brings a smile to my face. Most of this group on last year's Nepal adventure were mates who ride together on the East Coast of Australia. The banter was brutal.

When we head through the Zanskar Valley, we often have a short day in the middle. Some take the opportunity to rest, while others decide to trek the short 3km...ish to Phugtal Monastery.

Chris contacted me in September and told me he'd just been given a last minute 12 day holiday in October and asked if I had an adventure he could join. He wasn't expecting a positive response but I came back to him with an option in Nepal and an option in Bhutan. Surprised myself by pulling that out of the hat!

He chose a solo adventure in Bhutan that cost him less than others charge per person for a group of 10!

Pangong Lake is roughly the same area as Singapore at 699km² and situated at an elevation of 4,225m. It's 134 km long and about 100 m deep. The border of Tibet and India crosses the lake with about two thirds of it inside Tibet. The road along the southern shore is awesome riding but there is plenty of sand on the corners.

We often stay at the lake, east of the tourist hot spots. It provides stunning views and comes highly recommended by Rajat Garg "It’s just a lake. Nothing more. Nothing less." ⭐️⭐️
