ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORISATION (ETA) FOR

TRAVELLERS TO THE UK FROM TODAY



Visitors from the US, Australia, and Canada (amongst others) will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the UK starting from today - January 8, 2025

This initiative is part of the UK government's effort to fully digitize border control. The ETA will provide both travelers and carriers with more confidence regarding travel eligibility. An online application must be completed, and a small fee will be charged, it is similar to the US ESTA system.

From January 8, 2025, travelers who do not currently require a visa will need an ETA. Notably, EU citizens are exempt from this requirement until April 2nd, 2025. It is important to clarify that the ETA is not a visa but a visa waiver, which means travelers from countries already needing a visa will still need to apply for one.

To apply for an ETA, you will need a valid passport, an email address, travel details, and a debit or credit card for payment.

Please note, for those travelers who are combining trip to the UK and Ireland, an ETA will be required. The requirement applies to those who are travelling from The Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland (even for a day trip). It also applies to travellers who are transiting to another country via the UK.
