Montenegro got its name meaning “Black Mountain” from the Venetians, who were inspired by the dark mountains and forests all over the country. Montenegro is a place full of sun, beauty, and over 290 km of coastline.

One fascinating thing about Montenegro is how small this country is. There are less than 700,000 residents in all of Montenegro, but it sees more than one million tourists every year.

🇮🇹 It was our first time in the region of Le Marche and its capital of Ancona, a major port town with history dating back to the Romans and some spectacular sea views. We also headed just a little further north to the "Romagna Riviera"—a long stretch of beach on Italy's Adriatic coast, with the busy city of Rimini as its centerpiece.

🏇⚔️La Giostra del Saracino (the Joust of the Saracen) is a Tuscan tradition with medieval origins from the 1200s. Arezzo's historical joust takes place every June and September in the beautiful Piazza Grande. Watch our video of the dress rehearsal — a boisterous gathering before the main event — in Arezzo, Italy (link in comments!).

🇮🇹 The joust originated from the Crusades and the raids of the Saracens of the 1200s-1300s. This remains one of the most important historical reenactment events in Italy.

🕍 We enjoyed an evening of opera at one of Florence's most prestigious locations, the Santa Croce Basilica, the final resting place for Italian luminaries such as Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli.

🇮🇹 Florence is also the birthplace of opera, where the art form originated in the 16th century. At this free event, we heard music from Puccini, one of the greatest proponents of Italian opera. Check out the video: https://youtu.be/e9yj56nMFQQ

🇮🇹 Montecatini Terme: What a wonderful surprise! Why don't people talk about this place more?! We spent a number of weeks in this small Tuscan town—a great hub for getting around the region, from Florence to Lucca to Pisa—and discovered many of its charms, past and present.

💦🌳 Once a famous spa town, Montecatini Terme now offers one main spa, Terme Tettuccio, where you can drink the healing waters of the area. But we mostly enjoyed walking through the lush Parco delle Terme, hiking up to the historical hilltop center of Montecatini Alto, and searching for the best cafe.
