18. José de San Martin: the story behind his unpublished portrait.

Orrego estimated that the portrait was painted during the exile of Jose de San Martin in Brussels, between 1824 and 1831. The painting remained in Europe all this time and it was not until 2021, the year of Bicentennial, in which it managed to be discovered by a private Peruvian collector after it was put up for sale.

Today, on the occasion of the celebration of the bicentennial of the independence of Peru, I want to share with you my most recent digital work, the portrait of our forerunner and combative hero of the homeland Micaela Bastidas.

The portrait has been made using digital painting techniques and artificial intelligence.

This portrait is intended to represent the mixed origins of Bastidas, who was not only originally from the Andes of Peru, but also an Afro-descendant.

Different sources mention her particular beauty, as well as her slender build and her combative character. Her acuity, intelligence and her strategic participation during the rebellion were relegated and little mentioned throughout history.

She was only 36 years old at the time of his ex*****on.

I want to thank all those people who guided me in the search for information, experts and historians, and even if the opinions about the probable physical appearance of Micaela were contradictory for everyone, their contribution has been of the utmost importance for the realization of this portrait.

En 1997 se escuchó por primera vez este arreglo del Himno Nacional en ritmos peruanos. Nunca antes se había tocado con cajón peruano, sikus y manguarés.
En aquella época no todos lo aceptaron, incluso dijeron que era una falta de respeto con este símbolo patrio. Nosotros lo hicimos, justamente, con el mayor de los respetos, sin cambiar la línea melódica.
Guardamos como recuerdo el documento emitido por Indecopi (1998) que rechazaba la inscripción de este arreglo musical porque "el Himno Nacional es intangible y no se puede modificar" (ojo que la línea melódica es la misma, solo se hizo un nuevo acompañamiento).
La vida da vueltas... 20 años después en todos los canales de televisión y radios, se escuchan diversas versiones, incluso el Coro Nacional de Niños del Perú tiene una versión peruana que se emite por el Canal del Estado.

..... walking through the cobbled streets and enduring the terrible July sun, I suddenly saw the woman cross the street and then disappear as if she had never existed. Once inside the house, commenting on my alarm and my concern, the maid guided me to the small living room.

— Is this the woman you saw? —she asked.

Hanging on the wall, there was then the portrait of the woman I had just seen outside...
