Voyage of Soul A page for grief, death, and rebirth to be discussed in open loving space. There is an alternative to the mortuary. Home funerals can be beautiful and sacred.

In-home funerals allow families to create a customized, intimate, and intentional experience surrounding the loss of a loved one. In a home funeral, gentle bereavement Priestesses work alongside the family of the dead, and lead them through the care and preparation of the body. Blessings and ceremonies are designed with the family, and held at home or in a private space. Our Priestesses will guide

you through the preparation of basic legal documents that will need to be filed, including the death certificate, and coordinate transportation of the body as needed. Home funerals are considerably more cost-effective than traditional funeral-home rates and are legal in most states (including Colorado). Each of us will die, and in that knowing, we are empowered to consider how we want to do so. You can honor your loved one with ceremony, ritual, poetry, music, conversation, and love. You can hold an open house, as an alternative to a brick-and-mortar funeral service, where friends can come and grieve in small groups. There is much healing available in the process of staying close to our loved ones in the space of death, and honoring them consciously in your final goodbyes.

That time
I thought I could not
go any closer to grief
without dying

I went closer,
and I did not die.
Surely God
had his hand in this,

as well as friends.
Still, I was bent,
and my laughter,
as the poet said,

was nowhere to be found.
Then said my friend Daniel,
(brave even among lions),
"It's not the weight you carry

but how you carry it -
books, bricks, grief -
it's all in the way
you embrace it, balance it, carry it

when you cannot, and would not,
put it down."
So I went practicing.
Have you noticed?

Have you heard
the laughter
that comes, now and again,
out of my startled mouth?

How I linger
to admire, admire, admire
the things of this world
that are kind, and maybe

also troubled -
roses in the wind,
the sea geese on the steep waves,
a love
to which there is no reply?

Max Ritvo and I first met at the 92Y, in May 2014. He generously approached me after the Discovery Prize reading I’d given to share how much he appreciated my poems. I remember him proclaiming some…

On saddness:

And a woman spoke, saying, "Tell us of Pain."

And he said: Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;

And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.

And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the
Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.

-Kahlil Gibran

The Thing Is

To love life, to love it even when you have no stomach for it and everything you've held dear crumbles like burnt paper in your hands, your throat filled with the silt of it.

When grief sits with you, it's tropical heat thickening the air, heavy as water, more fit for gills than lungs; when grief weights you like your own flesh only more of it, an obesity of grief, you think,
How can a body withstand this?

Then you hold life a like face between your palms, a plain face, no charming smile, no violet eyes,

And you say, yes, I will take you,
I will love you again.

When we dream, we release the fixed structures and perspectives that frame our waking lives.

Our pineal gland awakens.

The vibration of our being rises.
