People who know me are very familiar with my love of the Disney Cruise Line (19 cruises and counting). Well--get ready for a shocker--I just returned from a Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady (18+ only) Cruise. Before I booked, I looked at many reviews, watched videos, and to tell the truth, I was on the fence; but to be a good Travel Agent, you must experience it all! Here are some of my thoughts:
First to appreciate what Virgin has to offer you have to take things slow and keep your eyes open to take it all in. It's the attention to detail that Virgin has mastered, from the layout of the ship, to underwater-themed colorful LED elevators, to the modern iPad-controlled rooms, the gourmet restaurants, and specialty-themed lounges, bars, and swimming area. On our cruise (which was at about 60% passenger capacity) the pool area was a good blend of quiet and relaxation and the bars could be a quiet respite or a live music-filled, happening spot, depending on which one you visited.
Virgin voyages created an environment that was visually interesting, full of nooks and crannies to discover, and reflective of its desire for all of its "sailors" to have a great vacation. Additionally, the cruise felt like a good value for money. All of its 20+ dining venues and all gratuities were included in the fare price, and things that are often extra on many cruise lines (gelato, arcade video games, and most soft drinks--including sparkling water) were included. As a result there were few, if any, times one felt any pressure to spend money beyond the cruise; of course there were ample opportunities to do so if one felt inclined, but it was slightly more subtle than some other cruise lines.
Another unique feature was the entertainment: Never Sleep Alone hosted by Doctor Audrey (not for the faint hearted); Duel Reality (Romeo and Juillet with an elaborate acrobatic circus twist); and Ships in the Night (an edgy, immersive song and dance routine). In addition to these major productions there was also live music, a casino, trivia, and dance parties. And if relaxation is more your thing there are numerous areas around the ship to have a quite drink with wonderful views.
For our cabin, we had the extra-large sea terrace (265 Sq.ft.) which was very modern and adequate for the two us. The closet didn't have a door but provided plenty of storage and a safe. The bathroom was of a nice size, and the cabin also had a mini fridge. Our steward provided complimentary fresh water (your choice of still or sparkling) throughout the day. There was even a hammock on the balcony! There are several levels of rooms to choose from, it seems each room or room style had a different layout and decor. The smaller of the "Rock Star" suites is something we may try in the feature; it comes with drink perks and is a little bigger than the room we had. Seems there is something for everyone's taste and check book.
I was very impressed with the eateries; options included Italian, Mexican, Korean, Steakhouse, Vegan (with a "secret" steak menu), and a Test Kitchen (think innovative tasting menus). Everything was made fresh to order and clearly carefully curated, with each restaurant having its own kitchen--rather a change from the catering-style central kitchen design on most cruise ships. My husband is a very picky eater, but each restaurant was able to accommodate him. From the food to the service, everything was amazing. In addition to these major eateries, you can eat at the Galley (The Floating Fresh Food Market), which serves as Virgin's multi-cuisine version of a buffet. And did I mention the made-to-order pizza, hand dipped ice-creams, and candy store (yup, included)?
Virgin's Beach Club is on the island of Bimini, came complete with two very large swimming pools--w/music of course-- beach side lounge chairs and a restaurant and bars, and shower stations.
To sum up, our overall impression was that Virgin Voyages offered great service, fantastic food, unique entertainment experiences, all packaged in a modern, well thought-out ship. Admittedly, Virgin may not be for everyone -- if you prefer a traditional main dining room, Broadway style entertainment, and more family-oriented programming, this may not be the cruise line for you. But for those who are looking for great food, great service, and a less traditional cruise experience, it's definitely worth considering. As for us, would we do it again? Absolutely!
