What is ...
As we all know that our own living legend, the Teesta River broke all barriers and reminded us again that we need to understand that our rivers are living identities. We need to be more careful while we settle beside rivers, encroaching their banks and restricting their movement. No dam, however useful it may be for the human civilization, we must understand that we are restricting the basic movement of the river. While we interfere with rivers in the name of development, it is always suggested that consider the age old wisdom of the people who respect the rivers and live with them.
This is not the first time that Teesta has roared, in 1968 we witnessed the devastating flood, almost the same way, around the same time. Inbetween, many a times Teesta reminded us of our unplanned development and consequences. The residents of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region needs to understand and learn from the Teesta incidents.
North of Sikkim with time has evolved as one of the best tourism destinations in the Eastern Himalaya, but how much tourism should be there, we have not accessed scientifically. Almost every year the tourism industry has been impacted and this time the major panic has been among the families across the world, whose family members and friends as tourists are stuck in North Sikkim.
The more than 12000 sq kms of Teesta River Basin and their residents are already undergoing a shock, rescue continues as relief begins. Rehabilitation will take months.
The mission "play for Teesta", being led by legendary Indian footballer, Bhaichung Bhutia and coordinated by ACT looks towards the support of this region till the time the residents are resettled to an extend where their basic survival is taken care of.
It is not only about bringing in relief and donations, but also playing to bring conscious about the River Teesta, the ecosystem and the residents, connect people to the region and its happening, who want to help and support. Playing is a part of the healthy mind and body, thinking and taking action as a community for another community who is affected, building a compassionate society through this mission "play for Teesta".

Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board worked through an NGO that works with the Pardhi community in Panna which used to be erstwhile poachers. They have trained about 20 of the community members, about 8 girls, and 12 boys, to have a sustainable livelihood with their traditional knowledge and skills from the forest. There are two sisters within this Pardhi community who are also Nature Guides.

We all tend to discard unused objects not realizing that those can adorn the house. My 11-year-old niece with her imaginative drawing has transformed an old trunk at Mandira’s Home to a beautiful storage box-cum-table. It’s not just painting, it’s a second lease of life for the about to be discarded trunk. So don’t throw away anything, just use your imagination to turn them into beautiful artifacts
