Workshop Alert!! Ghost Guide and co-founder of Bend Ghost Tours Jools Sinclair will be offering a past life regression workshop here in Bend this Saturday, June 8. When not leading brave souls through the haunted streets of downtown Bend, Jools is a Quantum Healing Hypnosis practitioner who helps people rediscover themselves through their past lives. 96 years ago today, a U.S. presidential candidate from Portland named Frank T. Johns jumped into the Deschutes River after he’d heard the desperate cries of a little boy who had been swept downriver. Johns had been in the middle of giving a speech in Drake Park when he heard the cries for help. Despite the icy waters and swift current, Johns managed to reach the boy, grab ahold, and attempted to bring him back to safety. They were only a few yards away from shore when Johns’ strength gave out. As his last act, Johns tried to push the little boy towards shore – towards safety.

Ultimately, the river proved to be too much that day. Frank T. Johns and 10-year-old Jack Rhodes both lost their lives on May 20, 1928, in this tragic incident.

We tell the story of the candidate on our Ghosts & Legends of Downtown Bend tour not only because of the associated paranormal events that others have experienced in Drake Park, but because we think it’s important for both visitors and locals to know about. So much of our work as researchers and paranormal investigators is about digging up the forgotten stories and bringing them back to life. We hope that by telling Frank’s story on our tour every night, we not only remember his heroism and monumental effort, but we also hope that this tragic tale serves as a reminder about the dangers of the river.

If you visit Drake Park today, you will find a memorial honoring Frank T. Johns. It is out of the way, off the paved walking path, but it is very much worth visiting.

We had the MOST spooktacular time at The Oregon Ghost Conference in Seaside this past weekend!! 👻 In addition to running our spooky booth, Jools gave a speech about her books and the very haunted side of Bend, Meg taught a class on unearthing the past through historical research, and we had a wonderful time talking to Jeremy for the podcast . We met so many phenomenal souls and kindred spirits this weekend! Thank you to Rocky and everyone who worked so hard to make the ghost conference so much fun.

We also came away with a very fun and disturbing souvenir (see photo!) Her name is Prudence, and you may just see her on one of our ghost tours soon...

We're so excited to be heading to Seaside in March for the Oregon Ghost Conference!! Bend Ghost Tour spirit guides Jools and Meg will both be speaking and offering classes at the conference. Jools will be speaking about her experiences writing about ghosts in her bestselling Forty-Four ghost mystery series and how that inspired her to investigate the real spirits here in Bend. Meanwhile, Meg will be teaching a class for writers and podcasters about research and how to bring long-buried stories to life. Plus, we'll also be bringing the Bend Ghost Tours Spooky Shop to the conference and will have wands, ghost ornaments, greeting cards, merch, books, and more! We truly can't wait and hope to see some of you spooky souls there that weekend!

Spooky Capture Alert!! We were taking photos at the O'Kane Building during one of our ghost tours when something VERY strange appeared. The first three photos here were taken within seconds of each other. Yet somehow, this strange dark mist appeared in only one of the photos. What is that? We couldn't debunk it and thought it was super spooky! Especially considering the very haunted history of this building...

With the veil thinning, we can't wait to see what else we capture this Halloween weekend!!

Spooky Capture Alert!!💀 Our guest Amanda took this photo during our ghost tour last week. We were stopped behind a building that used to be a former saloon when she captured this. At first, the photo just looked blurry. But as she inspected it closer, she began to see something...

The more we look at this photo, the more creeped out we get! We can clearly see the torso of a man standing in front of the camera. He looks to be dressed in old-fashioned clothes and is wearing a vest. But where is his head?

We've dubbed him the headless saloon keeper. And now everytime we stop at this building, we can't help but wonder if he might be lurking. ☠️

NEW TOUR ALERT! We’re so excited to announce that we’ll be offering a limited-run ghost investigation tour this spooky season!

Join us for our GHOST HUNT IN OLD BEND tour the last week of October (when the veil is the thinnest and ghosts abound!) This tour features ghost hunting, informal storytelling, mysteries, and chills in downtown Bend. We’ll visit several haunted outdoor locations where you’ll be challenged to collect paranormal evidence using ghost hunting equipment such as EMF readers, dowsing rods, Sboxes, and more before hearing about the location’s chilling past. It’s a one-of-a-kind ghost investigation that you won’t soon forget!

What a spooky and chilling ghost tour we had last night!! These delightful souls braved the rain, mist, and fog to hear about Bend’s haunted past. It was the perfect atmosphere for telling ghost stories, and we had so much fun! Looking forward to another spooktacular tour tonight.

Last week, we had an entire haunted hotel to ourselves!

The Bend Ghost Tours crew stayed at the recently reopened Shaniko Hotel in the ghost town of Shaniko, Oregon, on Monday. To our horror and delight, we discovered that we were the only (living) guests staying in the hotel for the evening. The staff leave at 9pm every night and lock the hotel up, meaning we literally got to have our own paranormal lockdown here! And we can definitely say that we had some thoroughly chilling and haunting moments throughout the evening in this atmospheric location.

We took the opportunity to bust out our brand new Ghost Box and try to communicate with any spirits lingering in the hotel. We wandered down the empty hallways with it and were surprised at the barrage of names that came through the box at rapid speed -- Peter, Anne, and Grace. The name Grace appeared three times during the visit, and in one of the stairwells, we definitely felt some kind of otherworldly presence. We also used dowsing rods to try to communicate with the spirits. We had some success, though we had more communication through the ghost box.

The hotel, which was built in 1900 and had recently been closed for 16 years, is rumored to have a ghost named Nettie that resides in room 14. There is also a small rubber ball left in the main hallway that hotel staff say is moved often by the ghost of a girl named Amelia. The aroma of perfume can sometimes be smelled in certain rooms, and some hotel staff have heard giggling at odd hours of the night.

Getting to stay alone in this haunted hotel was definitely a chilling experience, and in addition to ghost hunting, we had a grand time roaming the hallways of this old hotel, gazing at weathered photos of the once-booming wool town of Shaniko, and taking many, many spooky photos dressed up as ghosts. We won't be forgetting this experience anytime soon!

On this day in 1984, long-time Bendite and founder of The Pine Tavern Maren Gribskov passed away. She was 90 years old.

Maren founded the iconic Pine Tavern in 1936 along with her friend and fellow entrepreneur, Eleanor Bechen. Bend at this time was a rough mill town – so to have two women start their own business here back during that era was truly remarkable.

Maren always envisioned that the tavern would be known for its good food, hospitality, and warmth. And that’s exactly what happened. Locals flocked to The Pine Tavern shortly after it opened. And all these years later, they still do (as does a particular ghost named Gretchen who resides in the tavern and is prominently featured on our ghost tour!)

The Pine Tavern became a beloved institution, and today, it’s the oldest restaurant in Bend. It’s well-known for the towering tree that grows through the back dining room – which Maren saved. When she was expanding the restaurant in the 1950s, two massive pine trees were in the way. Instead of cutting them down, Maren found an architect to design the back dining room right around the trees. The one that is alive today is believed to be over 300 years old.

Maren loved Bend. In her words:
“There is something so free about Bend, so open... I have watched it grow. There is something that makes it my area. It is home. Travel is nice, but there is no nicer place to come back to than Bend."

We had such a blast on our ghost tours this past weekend! We had some of our best ghost hunting moments ever on Saturday evening's tour. Our brave guests collected lots of great paranormal evidence and we had a ton of fun. We're looking forward to more tours this week!

Today we remember Frank T. Johns, who on May 20, 1928 tragically lost his life while trying to save a boy from drowning in the Deschutes River. Johns was a 39-year-old presidential candidate and was giving a speech to a crowd of onlookers in Drake Park when he heard the desperate cries of a boy from the middle of the river. Johns did not hesitate when he heard the cries for help. He ran to the edge of the river, dove into the frigid water, and swam out to the boy. Sadly, Johns was unable to save him and ultimately lost his life as well.

If you visit Drake Park today, you can find a memorial for Johns marking this very tragic event in Bend's history.
