Winter is a beautiful season on Skye. Those crisp, sunny days are just perfect for wrapping up warm and going out for a walk. I'll be honest and say that this kind of weather cannot be guaranteed, but if you are blessed with days like that there is no better place to be in winter than Skye. It would be even more special to celebrate Christmas in this beautiful part of the world and, for this year only, you can! [ 95 more words ]

The Skye Festival is on over the next seven weeks, with many concerts, workshops, arts events, etc, taking place very close to our house. We went to a fantastic concert last night. It was a band from the Basque region called Orteka Tx. One of their instruments, played by two people at the same time, is called a txalaparte. It is a xylophone with big stone slabs that are hit with wooden mallets. Here is the Festival programme: http://www.seall.co.uk/feis-an-eilein-skye-festival/

Skye Festival 2015 /Feis an Eilein returns in July and August with 50 events for all the family. Find out what's on with music, theatre, talks and more.

The weather forecast tempted me to make an early start and it turned out to be another gorgeous day. We have been blessed with excellent weather the last week. I left the house at 7:45 and half an hour later I parked the car at the parking just after Kilmarie. A guy, looking somewhat distressed, came up to me and asked if I had a mobile phone with a signal. We have not seen many deer yet this year. When Di planted some bulbs last year our neighbour predicted that "the deer will find them tasty." The deer definitely come into the field in front of our house, but so far they have not ventured into our garden. I have only seen a small group of 8 or 10, including a stag, in the field once when returning late at night. [ 180 more words. ]

One of the sites that open early in the tourist season is Eilean Donan Castle. As we had visitors who had never been there and we ourselves had not been inside the castle, we decided to visit this tourist magnet before it gets busy after Easter. To many people this castle is synonymous with Scotland. It features on most publications by Visit Scotland and many biscuit tins, some Hollywood blockbusters have been filmed here, and is the most visited tourist attraction in Scotland, apart from Edinburgh. Yesterday I had a great time up in the sky above Skye. My friend Hans has a pilot's license and regularly goes flying from Inverness airport. He promised to take me up with him a while ago and yesterday was the ideal opportunity: almost cloudless sunshine and no wind. On the way to Inverness we stopped by the shore of Loch Cluanie to marvel at the reflections on this very still day. [ 340 more words. ]

Yesterday I went on a walk along the coast near Breakish with seven other people. It was organised by the Skye & Lochalsh Environment Forum and led by James. He was very knowledgeable, had the names (including the Latin ones!) of most animals and seaweeds at his fingertips. To say I did not know much about the wildlife that can be found in the rock pools and the coastal water is a bit of an understatement, so learned a lot yesterday. [ 396 more words. ]

I had been to the Point of Sleat once before, about 10 years ago. Getting there required little effort that time as I was on a photography workshop based in Doune Bay (Knoydart) and we were taken everywhere by boat. This time I walked from the end of the Aird road, which was about 4.5 Km. The first bit is on a good track road, a bit up and down, with some excellent views towards Rum and Eigg. After a few days of 'dreich' weather keeping me mostly indoors I looked at the weather forecast yesterday and decided on the circular walk to Suisnish and Boreraig. These two communities on Skye fell victim to the Clearances in the 19th century, when landowners (in this case the MacDonalds) decide to evict the inhabitants of many villages in order to make way for bigger sheep farms. The weather was predicted to be excellent, with wall to wall sunshine from 10:00, so we decided to make a day of it and go to Raasay. The last time we've went there was about 11 years ago. We arrived at the new ferry terminal in Inverarish, completed in 2010 at a cost of 12 million pounds. After we arrived at the slipway there was an issue with lowering the ramp, but after 15 minutes somebody found the right button to press and we could drive off. [ 498 more words. ]

Yes, we have more than one cinema on Skye! Well, there is always one, but when the Screen Machine comes to Kyleakin (just by the Skye Bridge) we have two. The Screen Machine is an 80-seat, air conditioned mobile cinema which brings the latest films to remote and rural areas of Scotland. It is the big blue truck in the picture and it drives to various locations on the West Coast and islands like Skye, Harris and North Uist. [ 98 more words. ]

It has been a bit blowy the last few days on the Isle of Skye. Nothing serious, just winds of 65 to 75 miles per hour. No trees down, unlike a few weeks ago when, after a evening visiting friends our way home was blocked by a big tree across the main road. Anyway, as Alfred Wainwright, the famous walker/writer once said "there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing," so we went out for a little walk this afternoon. I am sure it is not the same for everyone, but for me doing pre-departure research of my destination is a big part of my holiday enjoyment.
