“Richard Hambleton: The Last Shadows” - a must see exhibition for street art enthusiasts!
Hambleton, better known as “Shadowman”, was one of THE influential figures of the early street art and graffiti movement of New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His “Shadowmen”, dense black figures with their outlines splattered, dripping or melting into the urban canvas, could be found lurking in dark alleys, abandoned buildings and makeshift parking lots and were omnipresent around town. Despite of being so influential at that time, these days Hambleton’s work is often overlooked or forgotten especially in comparison to the work of his contemporaries Haring or Basquiat.
“The Last Shadows” allows to (re-)discover this influential figure by assembling a great variety of his works, photographs of and newspaper clippings on the artist adding rare treats such as pages of his diaries or his very final painting to the mix.
Many honest thanks to Ed, , and Alasdair, , friends and staunch supporters of Hambleton’s work, who together with envisioned this small but important and interesting exhibition.
So if you happen to be in Hong Kong don’t miss this opportunity to “meet” the “Shadowman”.
