Ethan (b. May 2024) has his winter woolies on today! On cold days like today the horses look extra fluffy because their hair is designed to stand up on end to create a layer of insulation between the air and their skin. If you ever see a horse with snow on its back that means they are very warm - their body heat is not escaping their thick coat and causing the snow to melt. Not sure if we’ll see snow here on the Outer Banks this winter but if we do the horses will be well-equipped to handle it. 🧣

Did you know that Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head is the oldest hang gliding school in the world?! Kitty Hawk Kites was founded in 1974 by Ralph Buxton and John Harris. Along with teaching folks how to take to the sky, Kitty Hawk Kites also hosts the longest-running hang gliding competition in the world, the Hang Gliding Spectacular!

Like so many of our nests this season, Nest 24, a Loggerhead nest in Nags Head, was over-washed several times by high tides. As the time drew near for the predicted emergence date, we were concerned that we were not hearing sounds expected for an imminent emergence. One night we heard a few waterfalls and sounds as though the turtles were moving sideways instead of up. Odd!

Despite the lousy weather and the absence of emergence indications, our dedicated volunteers sat for three nights, with no emergence — but then there was a 6 AM call from the Hotline, with a report that there were small turtles on the beach! A family from WV watched 2 come out of a hole (perhaps a crab hole?) 4 feet from the nest site. How strange was that!?!?!

At excavation, we were pleasantly surprised to learn how successful the nest was, despite all of the over wash!!! The vast majority of the hatchlings emerged when we weren’t present (probably in the middle of the night). 80 turtles emerged out of a total clutch of 88 eggs!!!

Congrats to Nest Parents Karen J, Lori M, and Lynn P, and all of Nest Sitting Team 24 for great work!!!

Remember, if you visit the beach, never go near a sea turtle or shine lights on them at night.

And please, when you leave,
KEEP THE BEACH
CLEAN
FLAT and DARK

And don’t forget, if you’re in the northern Outer Banks and accidentally hook a sea turtle, see a sea turtle on the beach, or crawl tracks in the sand, please IMMEDIATELY call the

Home Away From Home

We purchased Sands of Time in 2013, and have been in love with it ever since! Our goal from the beginning was to create a getaway that would feel like home, to all who visit. We continue to get closer to our goal each year, always taking advantage of the off-season to make improvements and add special touches. We hope to provide everything our guests might need, so they need only to pack clothing and food! Please check out our photo albums and read our reviews. Our family loves our home away from home, and we think you will, too!
