Furnival's Workshop Crafts from FurnivalsWorkshop on Etsy by Claire O'Byrne I use only salvaged, recycled and second-hand materials for my crafts.

I live on a boat on a canal in the Pennine hills and I make things from wood, horn and bone in my tiny workshop. I source my wood from the woods and hedgerows in the places I travel through, collecting only the dead and seasoned branches. I also collect it from skips, dumping sites and (with permission) from people's winter log piles. I'm lucky to have a couple of tree surgeons in my family who of

ten save me any interesting pieces they come across. I sometimes buy ornaments made from unusual wood or bone from charity shops to make into hair toys. The antler I use is naturally shed and foraged by myself or donated by friends. Mainly I work with native British hardwoods and in them I find a beauty and character to rival the most costly and endangered imported exotic woods. I have always been fascinated by the trees of my native islands and the history and folklore that surrounds each species. Part of the magic of wooden crafts is knowing their story: the characteristics of the living tree, the superstitions and legends associated with it, the place where it grows, the story of how part of it came to be turned into something else. Whenever possible I try to pinpoint exactly where my wood comes from and hopefully share a bit of the magic I find in the woods and hedgerows.
