Flyathlon

Flyathlon The Flyathlon represents a synthesis of three of the world's greatest leisure activities; trail running, fly-fishing, and craft beer. run. fish. beer.

The Flyathlon is the flagship program of the Colorado-based 501(c)(3) organization Running Rivers. Our mission as an organization is to facilitate the connection of people with healthy freshwater ecosystems through novel recreational events, educational activities and on-the-ground projects. Flyathlon events engage participants in a trail running and fly-fishing competition within a laid-back envi

ronment designed to make fishing and running accessible to all participants. Importantly, Flyathlon events include a freshwater educational component and enlist race participants to fundraise for freshwater restoration and education projects incentivized with prizes donated by sponsors. www.flyathlon.org

If you are a fan of craft beer, consider hitting one of Westbound & Down Brewing Company’s three Front Range locations (downtown, Lafayette, Idaho Springs) to pick up a four pack of Clear Cutt. Money raised with this limited-release collaboration will go towards future Greenback cutthroat trout projects via my 501c3, Running Rivers.

BTW, WB+D was recently named Top Brewery by in 5280 Magazine’s Top of the Town. (For the record, I’ve known that fact for years!)

Once again Rick Lafferty at Pagosa Rod & Tackle along with Tim Johnson have combined to create a piece at art work that is as functional as it beautiful. The top fundraiser at the Middle Creek Flyathlon will take home this awesome 7’6” 3wt custom designed glass rod built on CtS blanks with struble agate stripping guides. The rod retails over $1000! I will not lie …I test drove it earlier today…it’s dreamy!

We are stoked to introduce our newest Flyathlon sponsor to everyone. BruTrek is based in Bonner, MT and has an incredible line of drinkware and travel presses to satisfy our flyathlete needs! Everyone who reaches their minimum $250 fundraising effort will go home with a BruTrek Can Coldie embossed with the Run Fish Beer Flyathlon logo. This will definitely be the envy of all your non Flyathlon friends and will get them excited and want to join the fun next year. Rumor has it there will also be several of BruTrek’s Double Shot 3.0 Travel Presses making an appearance at the events where some Flyathletes will have a chance to take one home. Take it from me, the double shot has multiple uses!!!

Check out BruTrek’s full line of products and other products from Planetary Design.

And in a decidedly less awesome accomplishment, to try to make up for my sh*tty Saturday, I established a new Fastest Known Fish (FKF) course up at Lower Chicago Lake.

Rest assured that this one is beatable, folks. I was running on fumes and the lake winds were a howling!

To see what FKFs are out there to beat, for now, check out this site:

But stay tuned for an awesome new FKF platform which we will be rolling out mid-summer!

Following an epic battle in the elements on Saturday, Kevin Browning and Katie Mazzia completed the Troutman Challenge at Sylvan Lake State Park in Colorado!

This is Kevin's second completion and Katie's first, making her only the second Troutwoman on the planet! Solid work!

Nestled in the mountains of Colorado, the families and people behind Busey Brews take pride in their exceptional service, food, and beer. They also are outstanding supporters of the Flyathlon and Running Rivers.

For example, throughout the month of June, if you purchase a "The Diggity" IPA, $1 comes to Running Rivers! And you also have the opportunity to round up your bill, which also comes to us in June.

Finally, on Wednesday, June 28th, we are planning to do some sort of running / fishing adventure up in the Indian Peaks, followed by a beer-fueled Trivia Night at Busey Brews. 15% of the proceeds from the night will come to support the conservation work of Running Rivers!

If you are interested in the running / fishing part of the day, please email us at [email protected] so we can give you all of the final details.

The nest where most Colorado Flyathlon ideas are hatched...

While online mapping apps have their advantages and utility (particularly the free Colorado Parks and Wildlife Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) platform), there is just something super special about pouring over a hard copy map to spark that spirit of adventure!

And nobody does maps better than our friends and supporters at National Geographic Maps. This year, our Colorado Flyathletes will be receiving maps from the regions surrounding our races as a reminder to go out and explore.

Thanks for all that you do, National Geographic!

(And special thanks to our peeps at Laws Whiskey House for the creativity fuel...)

We are beyond excited to announce that Bighorn Toyota is a major sponsor of our 2023 Colorado Flyathlon events! Front Range Flyathletes! Just a quick reminder that registration opens TOMORROW for the Suffer Better 7th Annual Fall Trail Runs held at the incredible Staunton State Park - Colorado Parks and Wildlife. (Staunton is about 45 minutes from Denver and has some epic trails!)

https://raceroster.com/events/2023/67349/suffer-better-7th-annual-fall-trail-runs

Importantly, this year there will be an official "Fish Slap" division of the 25K, wherein you must catch a brook trout out of the Elk Falls Pond which is located approximately halfway through the run. Several of us have fish slapped this race in past and will be attempting it again in October 2023.

And as a bonus, through this race, you can raise money for our organization, Running Rivers!
