Australian born Photographer James Houston is recognized as one of the leading beauty and body photographers in the world. Based in New York, his background as a ceramic sculptor helped shape his distinct photographic style. Award winning Houston has travelled the globe in a career that spans over twenty-five years shooting the highest profile models and celebrities for the world’s leading brands
and publications. Clients such as Vogue, L’Oreal Paris, Donna Karan, Hugo Boss, Givenchy and GAP appreciate his eye for beauty. Houston also works regularly with leading celebrities such as Hugh Jackman, Emma Watson, Jessica Alba, Claire Danes and Cate Blanchett. To date, five international books have been published on his work with exhibitions being held in Europe, Asian, America and Australia. Houston balances his professional career with community projects that have also seen him assume the roles of Director and Activist. Houston’s book ONE Yoga Moves (Jamie Durie Publishing) was created to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer and was launched in Australia by activist and patron of the Australian Breast Cancer Foundation, Sarah Murdoch. MOVE (PowerHouse Books), launched in 2006 with the support of Elton John, Hugh Jackman and Baz Luhrmann, was created to benefit various HIV/AIDS charities with US$500,000 raised. Houston was executive producer on the short documentary film ‘Making of MOVE’, released on MTV (Asia) and Foxtel (Australia). While working on MOVE FOR AIDS, Houston was shocked to learn about American attitudes towards adolescent sexuality and the impact it has on U.S. teens. This discovery inspired Houston to raise over 1 million dollars to fund his first feature documentary titled, LET’S TALK ABOUT S*X (www.letstalkaboutsexthefilm.com). The Award winning film takes a revealing look at how American attitudes towards adolescent sexuality affect today’s teenagers. LET’S TALK ABOUT S*X aired nationally on the TLC network in April 2011 with the goal of helping parents and communities understand the importance of honest and open communication. In April 2013, during Earth Week, his latest multimedia project, Natural Beauty, was launched in New York at MILK Gallery to bring awareness to environmental issues and to raise funds for non-profit, Global Green USA. The series features captivating portraits of some of the world’s leading models and celebrities including Emma Watson, Christy Turlington, Adrian Grenier, Anja Rubik, Elle Macpherson and many more. The project includes a 12-part web series directed by Houston - The Making of Natural Beauty, (available for viewing at www.youtube.com/thehoustoneffect), as well as several film installations incorporated in the exhibition. Over recent years Houston has been connecting to his passion for design by creating and building ‘Ananda,' a contemporary lake house and interior experience in upstate New York. The result has been featured internationally in numerous leading interior and architecture publications including Belle Australia, LUXE U.S. and Architectural Digest. This was the first step to realizing his dream of creating a design vision and brand based on a mind/lifestyle integration philosophy. James Houston Design will initially offer stunning framed photographs and soon to be launched product line for the home.
