A personal highlight of the recent WINGS Birding Tours Worldwide "Winter in Newfoundland" tour was finally catching up with this "Western" Willet that has been hanging out since late November. One of just a few records for the province, and the first in winter, these western Willets are unique from their eastern counterparts - larger, grayer, longer-legged and longer-billed. There have been suggestion of "splitting" them into two separate species, so if that ever happens it will be another feather in my hat for Newfoundland ;)

This Ruff looked rather out of place amongst the ice & snow during our recent WINGS Birding Tours Worldwide "Winter in Newfoundland" tour. It has been a local celebrity since arriving in mid-November - and with the help of several kind birders feeding it, it seems to be doing OK given that it should be in the much warmer climes of Southern Europe or Africa right about now.

Willow Ptarmigan. A wintry blast swept through eastern Newfoundland last week, and with it some fun winter birding. Our WINGS Birding Tours Worldwide group had a great encounter with three of these beautiful birds, all dressed up in their seasonal finery and foraging on the snowy white barrens of the southern Avalon Peninsula. What lookers!!

Our dear colleague Jeff Bouton had the time of his life in Uganda! But he wasn't just digiscoping and observing wildlife - he attended the International Conference for Women Birders, and what an event it was!

Fall is always an exciting time to go birding, and Chris Ryan & I were definitely excited today when we found this beautiful Townsend's Warbler amid a flock of juncos & chickadees!! While Townsend's Warblers are rare visitors to eastern North America (from their normal range on the far west), Newfoundland has an inexplicable track record with them -- despite our location at the very eastern edge of the continent, we have more records of this species than most other eastern province & states combined! We don't know why it happens, but we like it ;)

Now, if only it had posed for better photos!

DYK that Newfoundland has an endemic (and threatened!) race of Red Crossbill? The "percna" race (Type 8) has the largest bill of all -- perfect for getting at those hard-to-reach seeds inside pine, larch & spruce cones ;) Join me in 2024 to see some for yourself!

Snow Geese are relatively rare visitors to Newfoundland. In fact, this group of nine hanging out near St. John's last week more than doubled the total number I've seen in the province after 20+ years of birding! It was especially fun to see an even more unusual "blue phase" goose among their ranks :)

My "office" this past weekend, as I led a hike along the Klondike Trail for Routes Adventures. This beautiful hike leads from Spillars Cove to Elliston and features some spectacular views along the way. We even spotted a few of the season's last puffins :)

My group enjoyed a brief but exciting encounter with THE Steller's Sea Eagle - perhaps the rarest and most famous bird in North America at the moment. This magnificent creature "should" be in eastern Russian right now, but has instead wandered halfway around the world and made it's new summer home in Trinity Bight, NL. Wow!!

The experience was somewhat outshone, however, by two very playful Humpback Whales that decided to spend more than an hour circling us, spy-hopping, splashing and even rubbing our boat. Curiosity goes both ways!! (Note: Our engines were OFF the entire time and they approached us - this was entirely their prerogative.)

RED-NECKED STINT!! I was late hearing about this MEGA due to lack of cell and internet service for a few days, but was able to make a short detour on our family trip and score this beautiful bird. It was especially nice to share the sighting with my family and several birding friends I don't get to see often enough. What a stunner!! A first provincial record and very rare visitor to eastern North America :)

Video shot using my phone and trusty Kowa TSN-883 scope.

It's that time of year when baby birds are fledging from their nests and adding some cuteness to the birding world -- and this newly minted Ruffed Grouse was our cute find of the week. (One of five, to be precise!). Mom was keeping a close eye on the brood from a nearby perch.

The first two weeks of "summer" tours have been cool and grey ... but the birding has been hot. The rarities and surprises have been great, but the regulars like this sharp-looking Razorbill are still highlights each and every day.

Double BOOM!! After a sometimes frustrating morning birding in the rain and fog, my knees nearly gave out when I turned my scope on a curious looking shorebird this afternoon. This breeding plumaged CURLEW SANDPIPER was foraging on "tern island" in Renews - a complete surprise and a long-awaited addition to my Newfoundland and American Birding Association list!! I missed the last one back in 2006 and have been waiting ever since :) While we only ever saw it distantly, the scope views of this stunning bird were totally satisfying. What a bird!! (For those unfamiliar, this is a Eurasian species and rare visitor to this side of the Atlantic.) **Video shot at long distance using my phone and Kowa TSN-883 scope.

BOOM!! This Dovekie was a complete surprise and a fantastic end to today's birding tour. Expected in winter, but certainly not in June, it was exciting to see this always smart looking species in its summer garb - and so close!! Hard to say who was more pleased, me or my clients 😀

🎶 Some of these things are not like the others ... 🎶

Thick-billed Murre are regular but scarce breeders in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve -- far far outnumbered by the very abundant Common Murre. So I was pretty excited to spy at least TEN together in one small section of the colony, as shown in this photos. Can you spot all ten?? The telltale white gapeline (on the bill) is visible on most, but a few others can be distinguished in this photo based on their darker, jet-black colour. 😎

There are still plenty of icebergs kicking around the coast of Newfoundland, including this one at Ferryland (though it is now much smaller than when I first saw it several weeks ago). My clients & I enjoyed some time with this arctic visitor this weekend, during our first birding tours of the season 😎
