PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS IN ANGUILLA

This year, 2022 heralds the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. In celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s historic 70 year reign, a number of special activities will take place across Anguilla:
Thanksgiving Service at the Pro-Cathedral of St Mary: On 2 June at 5pm the Pro-Cathedral of St Mary will hold a public Service of Thanksgiving in commemoration of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Platinum Jubilee Beacons: Following on from the Thanksgiving Service on 02 June, there will be a lighting of the Platinum Jubilee Beacon. The tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons will continue for the Platinum Jubilee. A beacon chain, once used as a tool for communication, has now become a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents and is often the central point of focus for any outdoor gathering or celebration. Over 1,500 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories. All are welcome to attend the lighting of Anguilla’s Beacon on Thursday 2 June at Connor’s Park, Meads Bay, at 7pm.

Senior Citizens Celebratory tea parties: HE the Governor and the Hon. Deputy Governor will host a series of tea parties between 7 to 10 June at each of our senior citizen care centres to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal: On 15 and 16 June, HE the Governor will be awarding 178 Platinum Jubilee Medals to qualifying front line service members of the Royal Anguilla Police, HM Prison Service, the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service and Anguilla Emergency Services. This special commemorative medal,
follows a long history of awarding medals to mark Royal Jubilees, with the first one awarded to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1887.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC): is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC aims to encourage the planting of trees to create a legacy, in honour of Her Majesty the Queen, which will benefit future generations. In Anguilla as part of the QGC we will be planting trees in the garden of the Governor’s Office in Old Ta, and in each of Anguilla’s seven districts. Each district will be presented with two trees and a bench with a commemorative plaque. These community events will take place over June and July; precise dates will be published in due course.

The Queens Platinum Jubilee Sports Cup: Recognising Anguilla’s rich sporting heritage, the Platinum Jubilee Sports Cup will be presented for the first time this year. In its inaugural year, the trophy will be presented to the winners of the cricket match at Ronald Webster Park in July. The Platinum Jubilee Sports Cup will be contested each to recognise the importance of sports in bringing communities together and promoting active lifestyles.
