Battle Rattle Rescue Vests A project to create indivdualized service dog vests for disabled veterans, at no cost to the veteran by using part of the veteran's uniform . So I made one.

On the lines of battle. Bullets whiz by, bombs exploding, friends, and comrades taken out. Connections to people lost forever. Sent home battered in body, mind, spirit, and sometimes all. People that were there for you seem distant and not able to understand the trials you went through and the struggle that reaches to dizzying heights before you. Until something miraculous wiggles it's furry self

into your life. Something so inherently loyal, non-judgmental, and in purest love and kindness. Something that melts the isolating pillars erected from PTSD. Something that eases night terrors, social life, and the days that just seem unbearable. These dogs are more than just dogs. They are salvation in the form of furry battle buddies. They chase away the times when everything seems to be at its worst. They are a never ending source of companionship, and should have their badge of honor worn proudly like their companions that have served our country. Battle Rattle Vests does this. And this is my story, and one of a close friend of mine. My Story:

I was deployed as part of Desert Storm. During my deployment we dealt with the war and later the protection of the men who fought the 220 oil fires left after the end of Desert Storm. In that time I was under fire. I even lost friends in the war. People that I counted on and they counted on me. While I was on this deployment I was assaulted at the hands of two of my fellow soldiers. People that I should have been able to count on to respect me and have my back. I lasted 14 years years with this weighing heavy on my psyche. Since my service I have had difficulty with sleeping, being in crowds, trusting people, and with day to living. The use of my battle buddy makes this possible. The hardest thing for me is shopping. I instantly feel trapped in the store and before my battle buddy I would rush through the store, grab what I needed, and leave often forgetting items on the list. Now I am able to not only go to a store, I am also able to talk with other people and even feel OK to ask a clerk for help. The battle buddy has been far better therapy and assistance than anything that I have tried. Paul's Story

Mine is similar to Leigh's. I was in the Army for 4 years and while I was not deployed my unit supported OEF/OIF with its day to day operations. I was assigned to this unit where I was assaulted and involved with an MST related situation. That night I lost my military career. I could no longer function because my concentration was shot. I could rarely focus or feel safe because of what the people I was suppose to trust took from me. My PTSD has been difficult to deal with and the use of my battle buddy is what saved me. My hyper vigilance and hyper arousal to basic daily life has been lessened to the point that I can feel safe, secure, and like no one is going to harm me. The battle buddy vest helps to connect to my battle buddy and share in my experience on a level that reflects my service. When I first started with my battle buddy, I saw the vest and thought, I wish this was more distinctive of my military service. To reflect me and what I have been through in my service. I looked for vests and while there are some out there only one spoke to me and that was one that was made from the material of the uniform of the Veteran. I went to order one and was unable to. This was a major disappointment because I thought I had found something I could connect to my battle buddy on another level. Something that my battle buddy could wear as proudly as I wore my uniform. I used my sewing skills and put together a vest that reflected my service as well as myself. The Facts

In the multiple wars that have occurred in recent history, many veterans have come home damaged mentally, physically, and in spirit. Many of them have a need for a public access animal (service animal/battle buddy), usually a dog, that they can rely on to assist them in getting through their daily routine. All service animals should have a vest that clearly designates them as a service animal to ease access to the places that they go. Veterans have pride in their service to this country regardless of the injuries received. This project is born out of a desire to link the service dog to that service. Each vest will be an individual creation that is an expression of that service. The vest will utilize the actual uniform shirt, unit patches, name tags, specialty badges, and even the veteran's rank insignia if they choose from their military service. We will endeavor to create a vest unique to that veteran and the relationship they have with their new "battle buddy" (everyone in the military has a battle buddy that watches out for them). The best part is the hope of this crowd funding exercise to provide these at no charge to the veteran with the option to donate to another vet. This is a project inspired when I went looking for a vest for my service dog. I am a disabled veteran with PTSD and I utilize a service dog and needed a vest for my dog. I wanted a vest that was personalized to my military service to share that honor with my dog that helps me function and serves as a constant battle buddy. I found someone who had started a service to make these, but it sadly seems to be inactive, so I made my own. Once two of my fellow veterans that have service dogs saw the vest, they wanted one so I made them one. Thus an idea is born. A donation to this campaign will help pay for patches, thread, some fabric (for those without a usable uniform item), it will also pay for the acquisition of a more robust sewing machine than the one I currently have to undertake this project. Once again the idea to give these to the vet as free of any charge as possible. We will also create original, individual vests for individuals with 50% of the total cost being used to create a veterans vest. Each vest whether a veterans vest or a non-veteran will strive to be a creation that expresses the individuality of the person that needs it. Your support saves lives and helps vets connect to their battle buddy on a deeper level by creating a uniform they can wear proudly beside those that served our country.

I know a lot of folks have looked for vests, have talked to Paul and have his card, and would probably like a vest. Let me tell you why this all went dark.

I started Battle Rattle in honor of my Service Dog Ranger. He wore the first 3 vest prototypes that I made. I loved him and depended on him for almost 4 years, then, well cancer. There was nothing we could do but watch in horror as my big beautiful and capable dog got weaker. In the end, we had to put him down. That was a few days over 3 years ago.

I mourn poorly and my sewing room went to shambles, became junk storage and I didn't care. I loved that dog, and every time I sat at those machines, I couldn't do it. I had 3 prototype vests that are 3 years old. None were ever finished. On the 3rd year anniversary, I decided to clean things up. I have a wonderful dog named Pax, that has been with me since. He does things a little different than Ranger, but he is a good egg by my side.

The bottom line, I literally walked away because it hurt to even be in that room. His picture adorned the walls, as do pictures of SDs that I have made vests for.

Well I think I am over it and would like to try again. Feel free to message me if you would like me to make a vest. I have put together 2 since I cleaned up as well as 3 collars. Its time to create again for Ranger. Message me if you are interested and I will give you instructions. The website will be back in some form shortly with a way to order and all that jazz. I have not answered my email for almost 2.5 years. That changes in the morning.

I apologize that I said nothing, but my grief level was crippling. I am going to head into the fray and get back to making.

Much love from Pax, me, and the spirit of Ranger.

Was on the "Fresh Living" Segment on KUTV channel 2 in Salt Lake City today. Scared to death. I hope the message of the importance of what a service dog is to a veteran was driven home.

If you don't buy one, please share this. Most of our money comes from donations. ALL money from sales goes back to provide vests for veteran service dogs

We provide, solely through donations, free vests to veterans that require service dogs to support them in their daily lives. Without the kind donations we would not be able to provide this service

This is a one man band. I really only have some folks that help me when their schedules allow it. We are on the cusp of being ready to really roll. So what has happened in the past week. Well...

We now have some basic fabric for our non-service dog vests and will now be offering them...once I complete the website, this weekend I hope, that gives you wonderful folks a place to buy them. We will also be offering in the website relaunch a line of basic collars. As well as custom patches for your service dog needs. As well as in case of emergency cards. Please look for it, order, and show it to your friends.

There are two t-shirt campaigns that we will be running, take a look at these.

Still need supplies, still need you to spread the word. I have plenty of business cards that I can send out to you.

Here is a redux of our first t-shirt. Now with a heck of lot more options

Do you go to or near a VA hospital and would you be willing to leave some business cards or brochures in the Mental Health or other areas to help promote our vests? Please respect your hospital or clinic's policies though. Email us [email protected] and we'll send you business cards and brochures. No charge

Okay I am a slacker. A lot of things going on, mainly the 4th which really slows me down. I am making name tapes and collars as well as 2 vests which are now being totally re-designed. I took some advice from folks I was testing vests with and found a design I think the dogs will like. I know Ranger does. Vests that are in que will be shipped shortly and now it is time to be very active again. Please continue to support us and tell your friends. We will be announcing a campaign to increase awareness shortly. Like in the next week.

OK I am starting to make dog collars. I will post those pictures this week. I am really updating the website this week. Sorry, I have been away for a bit. This last couple weeks has been a little intense

So...3 things:

1. Going to do a dog collar making venture. The collar will be a choice of several cammo patterns with your dog's name and your telephone # on it. This benefits the business. So far I have been able to make 7 vests but with start up and everything else, well we are going to shorten up. SO...collars, $15 bucks. Profit goes to Battle Rattle Rescue Vests.

2. Need a spiffy name tape that is a nice khaki color with your handle on it? Well I can make you one for $3, once again proceeds go to Battle Rattle Rescue Vests.

3. Want a spiffy name tag that is black with your color choice of thread? These are $5 a piece.

All profits from these go to Battle Rattle Vests. A link will be up shortly which includes a paypal link at

OK, Need to really amp this up guys. Please don't just share the site and the fundraising efforts. Please take time to donate to help keep us afloat. We are not in danger of going under by any stretch, but we need to stay afloat.

07/06/2015

OK...basic website is back. I am working on the new site on a local server

07/06/2015

So website is breifly down. I am working on a much cleaner and easier site that allows folks to place orders easier and to allow us to sell our vests to continue to provide a free vest to vets with service dogs. We will close up before we would ever stop giving our vests to folks that have given so much.

06/06/2015

OK a new and better web site is coming...Thus the site may look a little strange at times. I promise, better things are coming. With that, I will also be selling vests retail, to assist in the costs.
Here are the first of the new vest lines
1. The Battle Rattle Rescue vest. This is the signature vest and is for service dogs of veterans. This hasn't changed
2. The Veteran. This vest is for Veteran's dogs that aren't service animals and gives the dog a unique connection to the vet.
3. The Supporter. This can be made out of selection of materials for a supporter. This vest is for non-service animals as well. This gives the supporter and their dog a unique connection to the veteran.
4. The Service Dog. This vest is for a non-veteran service dog. It will be a standard red, blue or yellow cordura.

All vests will be fairly custom still with added features such as embroidery and the like. Hope to see you looking at and sharing with those who need it soon.

Sadness

Sadness

The Guardians of Rescue team members don't see rescue as a job, it is a born passion. We invest ourselves 100% into each and every case. We bring our emotions home with us and sometimes (most of the time) we literally bring our furry cases home with us. We love them like they're our family members so we treat them as such. Duncan was no exception.

Tonight our team members Frankie and Erica rushed to Duncan's side after receiving a call that he had gone septic. His stomach was filled with fluid as a result of the foreign objects sitting in his intestinal tract too long. They ruptured his bowel and no amount of surgery could reserve that. Duncan fought so hard to survive but after being in the care of so many skilled doctors throughout his week with us, his body had had enough. Duncan was no longer a candidate for surgery and we didn't want him to suffer any longer. A few moments ago they held his paws, gave him his tennis ball, and as he happily held it in his mouth Duncan's pain was over. We all are heartbroken over this loss. We all put our hearts into his recovery, and we know all of you did too. The response we received from our amazing supporters was inspiring. We're sorry the ending wasn't a happier one.

Some may say it's not fair that Duncan didn't get to have a loving family at the end, but that's where you're wrong. The entire team of Guardians of Rescue, Jefferson Animal Hospital, Selden Animal Emergency Hospital, VMCLI and all of you were more family than Duncan could have ever hoped for. In this week he received more love and encouragement than he's ever received.

Rest Peacefully Duncan. You were the perfect fit into all of our lives. Thank you for inspiring us.
We are forever

22/05/2015

This is Duncan and its a sad story with a bleak outlook they are saying tonight. We view our canine companions lives as sacred. Many of you have or know those whose life was saved by their animal companion. Please offer your healing energy, thoughts, hopes, prayers that this bleak outlook will turn. Thanks Guardians of Rescue for fighting for this dogs life
