The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs presents two exhibitions at City Gallery that re-examine the lives of the enslaved by their descendants.
Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery uses recent photography by a collection of South Carolina photographers to highlight the work of the Joe McGill and the Slave Dwelling Project, a local non-profit that works to preserve extant slave dwellings throughout the country.
“Payne-ful” Business, Charleston’s Journey to Truth pairs reproductions of historic advertisements with paintings of the enslaved by artist John W. Jones.
The exhibitions are on view December 1, 2023 – February 11, 2024, at City Gallery.
City Gallery will host a reception on Friday, December 1 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.; it is free and open to the public.
Opening reception for the The Slave Dwelling Project /Sleeping with the Ancestors' photo exhibit at the City Gallery at 34 Prioleau St. The reception starts at 5 p.m. Friday. Here's the city's press release.

The award is named in remembrance of Charleston Jazz's co-founder, Jack McCray and his famous hats. Rivers is a beloved jazz saxophonist, pianist, and educator. He has become one of the most revered jazz luminaries in the Holy City, and it is our great privilege to honor him with the award at the Charleston Jazz Gala on November 3rd at the Harbour Club at WestEdge. Due to a series of King Tides forecast for today and tomorrow, the MOJA Arts Festival's Reggae Block Dance at Brittlebank has been relocated to Hampton Park.
The free event will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, September 29, as scheduled, and will feature live reggae music, food vendors and artisan crafts from local artists.
Other MOJA programs, including this evening’s Street Parade and Opening Reception, are expected to proceed as scheduled.

The Colour of Music Festival is back at Charleston's Historic Dock Street Theatre for their MOJA debut! On Wednesday, October 4 at 7:30pm , the Colour of Music Octet will honor the legacy of Edmund Thornton Jenkins, featuring his “Negro Symphony Dramatique” arranged by his great-nephew Tuffus Zimbabwe (Berklee '05 and current - albeit on hiatus - Saturday Night Live band keyboardist.
