We are absolutely thrilled at the rate of growth and we want this to continue. In the next couple of days we hope to bring in two more admins with specific duties in helping to run the page. There are currently two people updating the page but we do hope that by increasing this number we can double our activity. If you are interested in maybe helping us out as an admin please message the page and tell us a little about yourself and why you feel you could offer some vibrancy and fun to the page.

Duties will include;
-regularly updating the page along with the other admins

The applicant would ideally have a good command of English and be able to write coherently and have good functional English. Speaking Spanish would be a huge additional benefit. This is your one task for today. So who is in Fuerteventura today? Who is on their way out in the next few weeks or months?

Keep calm and... love Fuerteventura!

When one walks the white sands of La Oliva or spends an evening in the old town of Corralejo taking in the smells of freshly prepared seafood and sound of carefree laughter, when you explore the rugged countryside or spend some time in leafy Betancuria, when you head down south to feel the unspoilt culture of a small town or explore the out of this world and empty landscapes of Cofete; you can see easily why this island was once referred to as "island of fortune". If this place bites you, no matter how far you roam or where you are from in the world, her venom will be in your veins forever more.

One of the key interests of this page is historical research and information. From time to time we will be posting pictures, stories, events, maps and documents all related to the rich, but understudied history of Fuerteventura. Any info you would like to post please feel free to do so. If we have made any error with dates or places we would also like you to correct us if you spot those mistakes.

A lazy afternoon in Corralejo, 1920. I know these stunning pictures have done the rounds of the forums and on Facebook but I feel it is great to keep them relevant and to keep sharing them. Anyone who may have their own old photographs of the island do be sure to share them here.

A stroll on Lobos is a must for all visitors to the island and everyone must do it once. It is an ancient volcanic island named after the seals that once made it their home. These seals are long gone and replaced instead with the more adventurous tourist. It is a desert island off a desert island and, much like its larger parent which overlooks it across the straits from the white sands of La Oliva, it has much more to offer than meets the eye. There is an abundance of wildlife including many species of fish and sea birds. There are also 130 plant species on the little island so the wannabe botanist is well at home. Between 1402 and 1405 the island was used by Gadifer de la Salle as a base to launch the conquest of Fuerteventura. In October of 1402 the island was also the scene of a mutiny against de la Salle when a treacherous member of the conquest party, a man by the name of Berneval, abandoned de la Salle and his men on Lobos while he ostensibly returned to Lanzarote to get supplies and water. Upon return to Lanzarote he did a deal with a group of Spanish sailors who were based at Graciosa off Lanzerote. de la Salle was only rescued when four of his allies rowed to Lobos to rescue him. Another interesting snippet of Fuerteventura's history and just one more reason to visit this cosy little island.

Vega de río Palma, Betancuria. Something of a "forest", well by Fuerteventura's standards. The ancient capital of the island which was named after the conquistador Jean De Betancourt. This town is full of history and at times it seems it stands still and yield to time. This place is not just a pretty village with an extensive history, it is also a great place for walkers and nature lovers as you explore the deep valleys and the slopes, in parts covered with striking foliage that provides a deep contrast against the dusty red soils.

El Cotillo sunset. No doubt one of the island's most stunning sights is the humble sunset. At dusk the oranges, crimsons and reds of the volcanoes and coves glow as the sun descends behind the sharp silhouette of the island. In Fuerteventura it is worth clearing the schedule and just taking time to enjoy a cold beer as nature puts on a show.

Fun story about the little island aspiring to be the "eight Canary". Graciosa does look beautiful. Really does look like one of the last untouched spots. Has anyone had the pleasure of visiting? Also related to this story, how does everyone find wifi in the islands? Bad coverage? Slow? Non-existent? :P

- Canary Islands - Disconnected! - La Graciosa - Tiny La Graciosa’s remote status was further undermined earlier in the month when locals and visitors suffered wifi isolation for two consecutive days.

Any residents affected by the tax on solar panels? A very interesting read on El Hierro's progressive views on energy and self-sufficiency. Surely a good lesson for the rest of the islands.

"All the more admirable then that El Hierro, the smallest Canary Island with a population of around 10,000, continues as the sole voice of reason on the matter. The island is the first in the world to be self sufficient in power, an incredible achievement that's apparently been far more newsworthy internationally than in either the Canaries, or Spain."

- Canary Islands - A move into the sunset? - El Hierro - La Gomera's smaller, more isolated, western neighbour El Hierro somehow manages to be in the vanguard of 21st century thinking on important issues like self-sufficiency.

Fuerteventura fact: The Maxos, or local Guanches natives that lived on the island of Fuerteventura had a well developed legal system. One of the more interesting laws, but certainly not the most advanced, was a law that said one could kill another in revenge, as long as he came through the front door to commit the killing. If he came in through the back or any other entrance, the killing was considered a murder. The Guanches looked down on underhanded tactics in this department.

Oh, to look upon those silent, considerate valleys when Mr. Mercer had the privilege to do so. The emptiness, the sparsely populated farmlands and golden peaks rising like a spine from the centre of the island. We are still blessed though to know of this island today and to be able to appreciate its beauty.
