Here is a clip from the massed pipes and drums at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo performing on the esplanade in front of Edinburgh castle as they have done every August since 1950. I know this face book page is meant to be all about Orkney but I couldn't resist including it to give you a taste of what must be one of the best Scottish experiences. The Tattoo is a not for profit organisation and in recent years has gifted over £10 million pounds in surplus funds to charities. The Tattoo takes its name from the cry of inn-keepers in Belgium over 300 years ago. They ordered "Doe den tap toe" [turn off the taps] when the fifes and drums of the local regiment marched through the streets signalling the soldiers to return to barracks.
